Pentecost Sunday "Listen Carefully" To the Word We Speak To the God Who Saves Let us rise for the reading of this morning's Sermon Text recorded for us in the Book of Acts where we read the first 21 verses of Chapter 2: WHEN THE DAY OF PENTECOST CAME, THEY WERE ALL TOGETHER IN ONE PLACE. SUDDENLY A SOUND LIKE THE BLOWING OF A VIOLENT WIND CAME FROM HEAVEN AND FILLED THE WHOLE HOUSE WHERE THEY WERE SITTING. THEY SAW WHAT SEEMED TO BE TONGUES OF FIRE THAT SEPARATED AND CAME TO REST ON EACH OF THEM. ALL OF THEM WERE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT AND BEGAN TO SPEAK IN OTHER TONGUES AS THE SPIRIT ENABLED THEM. NOW THERE WERE STAYING IN JERUSALEM GOD-FEARING JEWS FROM EVERY NATION UNDER HEAVEN. WHEN THEY HEARD THIS SOUND, A CROWD CAME TOGETHER IN BEWILDERMENT, BECAUSE EACH ONE HEARD THEM SPEAKING IN HIS OWN LANGUAGE. UTTERLY AMAZED, THEY ASKED: "ARE NOT ALL THESE MEN WHO ARE SPEAKING GALILEANS? THEN HOW IS IT THAT EACH OF US HEARS THEM IN HIS OWN NATIVE LANGUAGE? PARTHIANS, MEDES, AND ELAMITES; RESIDENTS OF MESOPOTAMIA, JUDEA, AND CAPPADOCIA, PONTUS AND ASIA, PHRYGIA AND PAMPHYLIA, EGYPT AND THE PARTS OF LIBYA NEAR CYRENE; VISITORS FROM ROME (BOTH JEWS AND CONVERTS TO JUDAISM); CRETANS AND ARABS - WE HEAR THEM DECLARING THE WONDERS OF GOD IN OUR OWN TONGUES!" AMAZED AND PERPLEXED, THEY ASKED ONE ANOTHER, "WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?" SOME, HOWEVER, MADE FUN OF THEM AND SAID, "THEY HAVE HAD TOO MUCH WINE." THEN PETER STOOD UP WITH THE ELEVEN, RAISED HIS VOICE AND ADDRESSED THE CROWD: "FELLOW JEWS AND ALL OF YOU WHO ARE IN JERUSALEM, LET ME EXPLAIN THIS TO YOU; LISTEN CAREFULLY TO WHAT I SAY. THESE MEN ARE NOT DRUNK, AS YOU SUPPOSE. IT'S ONLY NINE IN THE MORNING! NO, THIS IS WHAT WAS SPOKEN BY THE PROPHET JOEL: "'IN THE LAST DAYS, GOD SAYS, I WILL POUR OUT MY SPIRIT ON ALL PEOPLE. YOUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS WILL PROPHESY, YOUR YOUNG MEN WILL SEE VISIONS, YOUR YOUNG MEN WILL SEE VISIONS, YOUR OLD MEN WILL DREAM DREAMS. EVEN ON MY SERVANTS, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, I WILL POUR OUT MY SPIRIT IN THOSE DAYS, AND THEY WILL PROPHESY. I WILL SHOW WONDERS IN THE HEAVEN ABOVE AND SIGNS ON THE EARTH BELOW, BLOOD AND FIRE AND BILLOWS OF SMOKE. THE SUN WILL BE TURNED TO DARKNESS AND THE MOON TO BLOOD BEFORE THE COMING OF THE GREAT AND GLORIOUS DAY OF THE LORD. AND EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.' This is the Word of our Lord. Let us pray: Glorious and gracious God, may the words of my mouth and the meditation of each of our hearts be acceptable in Your sight, our only source of hope and comfort. Amen. Sermon text taken from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION 1978, used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers. Dear Followers of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. When Christ ascended into heaven, He told the disciples that they were going to be His witnesses. That they were going to be the people to report what He had done and share with others the wonderful news that He was the Lord and Savior. At that moment of His Ascension, He told those disciples, that they were to go back to Jerusalem. And wait. Wait. For the Counselor, and the Comforter that He had promised. Wait, to begin their ministry. And in our reading from Luke's Book of Acts this morning, we see that that's what the disciples were doing. They were in Jerusalem, gathered together in a house, and waiting. And as they were waiting, this GREAT SOUND of a wind came from heaven. And as they were sitting there with each other all of a sudden what appeared to be flames ... tongues of fire, appeared over each of them. A sign, that the Lord was accomplishing His directive for them, sending to them, the Holy Spirit. The Comforter ... the One who was going to empower them, strengthen them, embolden them, in their faith to carry out the work that He had said they were to do. To be His witnesses ... beginning in Jerusalem. And as the Holy Spirit came upon those disciples, they began to discuss the wonders of God. The wonders of God in languages that were understandable to those Jews who had gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Pentecost. Who had come together under the requirement of the Law to be in Jerusalem, to bring sacrifices to the Temple. And as the disciples began to speak in different languages, the people heard this. They were amazed. They were bewildered. I mean think how hard it is even for us in our own life, when you have two people talking in English at you at the same time. Trying to hear and understand what they're saying. Let alone to have 12 people speaking 12 languages all at once in your presence. No wonder those people were bewildered. No wonder they were confused. They did not understand what was happening because they said: These men are all Galileans. These men are all people from Galilee. How can they be speaking in these languages? How can we be understanding what they're saying to us? As they talk to us about the love of God and the wonders that He has done. They were bewildered. And, of course, there's always that group in a crowd that's going to come up with some great explanation. So, too, in Jerusalem. Some people came up with the explanation that these men were drunk. That they had too much to drink. There are lots of side effects of too much alcohol. But I don't know any of them that have enabled people to speak in languages that they don't know coherently and with great clarity ... which is what the disciples were doing. And the people in Jerusalem HEARD that message. And as they gathered around the disciples, it was Peter who stands up. It was Peter who stands up to say to them: First and foremost, listen carefully to what we have to say. Listen to us because we are NOT drunk. This is the fulfillment of God's prophecy. This is the fulfillment of God's promise if you go back to the Book of the Prophet Joel, and read there these words. They are being fulfilled in your presence today. When God said He would pour out His Spirit on all people. Pour out His Spirit on people so that they would testify to the love of God, that they would prophesy. They would proclaim what God had done. Men and women, young and old, would receive that gift of the Holy Spirit. That gift of faith. And by that faith comes understanding. It opens the ears to hear what God has to say. It opens the eyes to see what God has laid out before us. And it opens the mind to understand what is happening. What is going on. And why that's so important to listen carefully. Peter said: listen to what I'm telling you because this is all about God and His wonderful love and His gift of faith that has come to us His disciples to share with you. To carry on that mission. And they spoke to those people about the wonders of God's love. And we are reminded that we, also, today have that same gift of the Holy Spirit, that same power of God that's within us because someone shared that message with us. Someone spoke the Word of God to us. And the Holy Spirit has brought us to faith. Keeps us in that faith. Keeps us nurtured and growing in that faith on the Word of God. Because before we had faith, we were blind. We couldn't see. We stumbled through this world of sin, bumping and ... and coming head-to-head only with sin and its consequences. Without that gift of faith, we couldn't hear the love of God. The words could be heard but we wouldn't understand their full meaning and our minds were literally foolhardy. Dumb, as to what God has done, as to who God is, and to what He had done for humanity. But by that gift of the Holy Spirit, who came to many of us with the words of God in our baptism accompanying that water. In the name of the Triune God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit we have been given the gift of faith and the gift of the Holy Spirit. That same Holy Spirit that was spoken of in Joel has been poured out on us ... poured out on us! So that we KNOW what our God has done. We KNOW the one true God. We have such knowledge and such confidence in that knowledge, that it fills our lives with confidence. We KNOW God the Father. We know that He created this world. We know that He created us exactly when and where He wanted us to be. We know that God the Son REDEEMED us. That He BOUGHT US BACK from sin, death and hell by HIS sacrifice on the cross. We know that God the Holy Spirit, while we were helpless ... hopelessly lost, incapable of coming to God on our own, came into our hearts and into our lives and made us the children of God. And has brought blessing upon blessing to us, to the faith that is ours. The forgiveness of sins ... eternal life ... knowing that our God is with us each and every day. And we go BACK to that strength. We go BACK to that power. We POUR OVER and LISTEN carefully to what God says in what He's recorded for us. Because our human nature, is to go off on our own thinking we know everything! Thinking we know best, thinking no one else could possibly understand or comprehend what we are going through or would be able to help us. Yet our God comes to us continually with His love. Daily with His encouragement. Throughout His Word He reminds us of what He has done for us. That we are His. That He rules the world and He rules our hearts. That He has given to us faith and He has saved us. And He wants us to put THAT faith into practice. He wants us to USE the knowledge that we have been given. To use the understanding, to stand up as Peter did. To stand up before a crowd that didn't understand what was going on. But yet, he spoke to them clearly using the Word of God, reminding them of what was happening as well as in that prophecy of Joel, what was to come. The terrors of the great and glorious Day of the Lord with the firm message that whoever calls on the Name of the Lord, will be saved. Peter was doing the work that God had left for His church. And it's amazing that, two months before that, those disciples were locked in a room and terrified. They were hidden away, trying to figure out and comprehend everything that had gone on from Christ's crucifixion to His empty grave. But yet, the Lord came to them, time and time again, reassuring them that He was alive! Teaching them, everything that had happened so that they would understand and be able to share it with others. And that gift of the Holy Spirit brought to them strength and it gave them the power to stand up and to speak. And that same Holy Spirit and that same power, is within us. It is within us, to stand up and speak ... ... calmly to those people who are calling us crackpots, who are calling us outdated. They may not call us drunk, but they call us a lot worse things than that. But yet, in love, we give to them the Word of God. We present to them what God has said, and we pray that the Holy Spirit will use that Word within them, to create faith. To open their eyes. To open their ears, to unconfuse their minds to the Truths of Scripture. There's the Strength. There's the Power. That is what God has asked of us and encourages us to do. He gives us the Strength, He gives us the weapon in His Word, and He gives us the encouragement that He will be with us always ... to the very end of the age. So we listen carefully to what God has said to us, we pour over and study those Scriptures. We listen to what God has said to us. Not just the things that bring us tremendous comfort. Not just the things that make our life easy. But we also hear Him when He speaks to the things that take us out of our comfort zone. To stand up and to speak. To live our life of faith. And when the people around us ask us and question us, not to take it, at first as just an attack. But to look at it as an opportunity to open the eyes of another person who is blind ... so that they can see. To give to that heart that does not understand the love of God, the Word of God, so the Holy Spirit can work. So that the Holy Spirit can bring that person to faith and let them understand what God's love truly is. We're here today reminding ourselves of the gift of the Holy Spirit. That gift is ours. Let us use it, to the Lord's good. Amen. Let us rise. Now may the peace of God which goes beyond all of our understanding, keep your hearts and your minds and especially your lives in the one true faith unto life everlasting. Amen. We now join together in the confession of our faith. We use the words of The Apostle's Creed. (Banner: Create in me a clean heart.) (Banners: Father, Son, Holy Spirit; Moved by His love.)
