>> Hi there, I'm Christa Orecchio, Clinical and Holistic Nutritionist and Founder of the WholeJourney.com. For the last 12 years, since I graduated from IIN, I've been helping people heal from the root cause using food as their medicine. According to a National Survey of Family Growth from the CDC, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of seven couples had trouble conceiving. And that number is projected to client to 1 out of 3 in the next 10 years. With the information, I'm going to teach you in the short videos, you can play a huge role in preventing that trajectory from happening. In a world with seriously declining fertility, high quality diagnostic lab tests can yield near magical powers. That's why today, we're talking about assessing and improving fertility with seven less conventional more holistic functional lab tests that can help you assess and improve your client's fertility. They certainly don't have to run them all. I just want you, as their Health Coach, to be aware of them so that you can suggest what feels right for a particular client based upon their unique situation. Now I'm curious, did you know that it's absolutely possible to have just as healthy of a pregnancy in our late 30s and early 40s, as we could in our 20s? We just have to understand how to optimize our health correctly. I have been privileged to witness this so many times with my own clients, and now my coauthor and I are lucky enough to witness countless success stories from our bestselling fertility book, "How to Conceive Naturally And Have a Healthy Pregnancy after 30." When I was in private practice, I looked at deeper aspects of lab work to see what if any toxicity needed to be cleared, where genetics were at play, what nutritional deficiencies needed to be filled in in order to conceive naturally, have a healthy pregnancy and baby. I was never positioning myself as a fertility expert at all. But before I knew it, these women they came in and they started getting pregnant left and right. Like you, I have such a strong belief in the power of the human body. If you give it what it needs, remove what it doesn't need, it will heal itself no matter what the health issue. That's exactly what happened. Keep in mind that these women who are coming to me had tried to get pregnant for three to six years. They've spent thousands of dollars doing so, not to mention the enormous emotional and financial rollercoaster it took both them and their partner on. As a practitioner, I'd always rather test it than guess at it because you get targeted information that helps you highly customized nutrition protocol so your clients can joyfully use food as their medicine because the quality of the egg and the quality of the sperm begin developing 90 days prior to conception, we want our clients to get this information that they need to be able to contribute to that high quality. Take this in for a minute. The 90-day period prior to conception has the potential to change the genetic code of the baby so it not only contributes to the next generation but also to the generation after that. That is so powerful. By doing some assessing to be able to target nutrition for this period, it's so helpful to you and your client to positively affect not only their future children but their grandchildren as well. What a beautiful mission and legacy for you to leave. Now outside of the important conventional lab tests an OB/GYN will run like FSH, or LH, the follicle stimulating hormone or the luteinizing hormone, we're going to look at egg production and regulation, they're also going to check progesterone to see if a fertilized egg has enough tissue to implant into. I'm going to talk about the other types of tests, my favorite unconventional testing tools to help someone get pregnant while also healing from the root cause. So test number one is the test for the MTHFR genetic mutation. It's mouthful. We have a gene in our bodies, it's called the MTHFR gene. It instructs your body to make an enzyme necessary to convert vitamin B9, which is also known as folic acid, into a usable form for the brain and the nervous system. So we go from folic acid to folate. This enzyme is crucial and very important for growth and metabolism, and it helps form the baby's neural tube. Almost 50% of the population now has this genetic mutation where they can't convert their B vitamins, mostly folic acid, and vitamin B12. And if we can't convert them, we can't use them and we become deficient in them. This can lead to depression, trouble detoxifying, multiple miscarriages if not identified. It can also prevent the body from breaking down heavy metals which is another root cause of infertility, having heavy metal toxicity. So people with this mutation and really all of us should be taking an open form source of each vitamin called methylfolate and methylcobalamin, that's an open form source of vitamin B12. We will talk all about supplements for healthy conception in another lecture. But I want to drive this point home with a powerful client story of my client Erika, who came to me in her mid-30s. She was trying to conceive her second baby, and she had had three miscarriages. She was absolutely devastated. She was pregnant for the fourth time when she came to me and in critical danger of having her fourth miscarriage. We identified that she had the genetic mutation, we used methyl donors, we used Chinese herbs, and thankfully, we were able to save her baby girl. She is now pregnant with her third child with no complications whatsoever at age 38. There's a profound opportunity here for you as a healer to be an instrument of light and peace and the sheer magic of creation because now a human life exists, whereas otherwise it would not. The reason for all the types of mutations is variations in the specific genes, they're passed from each parent and we can have this mutation at any age. You don't need a doctor to run this test, that's the good news. A 23andMe test or another online saliva or swab test can identify if someone has this mutation, and all doctors in those functional practitioner should be able to run it as well. Test number two, food sensitivity test, so important. Food sensitivities are very different than full-blown allergies. They are subtle, and they often cause symptoms most don't attribute to food, making them a little bit trickier to detect. Common symptoms would be dark circles under the eyes that indicates a negative liver response to a food, headaches, bloating, gassiness, irritability or grogginess right after you eat a particular food. If that happens, you better believe you probably have sensitivity. And so sometimes they go unnoticed because we can have a sensitivity to a "healthy" food, like Sholly, who was one of my mamas, who had no idea she was sensitive to all almonds, she was drinking almond milk a multiple times a day thinking she was doing something good for herself. So we switched her to coconut milk, and her symptoms improved almost immediately. This is because our bodies operate a lot like custom cars. We all have a specific formula of nutrients and foods that fuel us best. Some clients I've tested have been shocked to find out that they were sensitive to foods they ate daily like oranges, asparagus, onions. I myself have high food sensitivity to safflower oil that's in all the health food store chips. I get raging anxiety every time I consume it, and I didn't connect the dots for a long time and most people wouldn't. Then there are the five most common food sensitivities you should look at with all of your clients wanting to get pregnant, gluten, soy, dairy, corn, and eggs. And at the very least implement an elimination diet for three weeks. Twyla was a former client of mine, chronic headaches for 20 years, after doing everything I would normally do for headaches, vitamin B12 or riboflavin, magnesium, liver detox, they just wouldn't go away. We run our food sensitivity tests, find out she's highly sensitive to eggs, remove the eggs, do a little gut repair, and two decades worth of headaches go away, so did her brain fog and 40 pounds. So sometimes, there can be simple answers to seemingly complicated questions. Running an IgG blood test for food sensitivities could be one of the most valuable tests your clients ever run. The I in IgG stands for immunoglobulin, he most common antibodies or proteins made by the immune system. Immune system produces these immunoglobulins in response to antigens or any substance that pose a threat. Usually, it's an environmental toxin, bacteria, pollen, viruses and of course, it can be a food as well. Food can be our most powerful form of medicine or in this case, our slowest form of poison because repeated exposure to what we're sensitive to can cause long-term damage over time and lead to leaky gut syndrome, which in our society we live in today, it's not so much a question of if we have leaky gut, it's how much leaky gut do we have. And we know that leaky gut left unchecked leads to autoimmune disease. This is so important. Your poor client can be consuming her daily orange thinking what a good thing she's doing to stock herself up on vitamin C and fiber, meanwhile her immune system feels under attack. So don't guess at it, test it. Your client can also order an IgG test online or work with an integrative or functional medicine doctor to run this lab and you can review it. This was the case of Erin, age 31 and John, 37, from Minnesota, they were the loveliest couple, and they came to me with a diagnosis of unexplained infertility, that's what their doctors told them. Five years later, expensive fertility treatments each year and a broken heart each month when she got her period. We started with food sensitivity test, we ran them on both of them, cleaned up their diet tremendously, got rid of Candida in him, balanced her brain chemistry, and 11 months later, they got pregnant naturally, and now have a beautiful toddler named Grayson. So again, there is no greater privilege than to be used as a guide to help people create these kinds of miracles for themselves. Speaking of leaky gut, Hippocrates, the father of natural medicine said 3,000 years ago, all disease begins in the gut. As I mentioned earlier, leaky gut is an epidemic. I've worked with over 6,000 people in my online program called, "Gut Thrive in 5," and 4,000 more in my online Candida program to help them recover from this. If we think of our intestinal wall as a brick wall, with leaky gut, the mortar is missing to some extent from that brick wall. That allows food particles, toxins, bacteria, and other pathogens to escape into the bloodstream where they don't belong and wreak havoc on our health, especially when it comes to autoimmune disease. Things that cause leaky gut are food sensitivities that we just talked about, GMO foods like corn, soy, and canola, the overuse of antibiotics, and especially consuming antibiotics regularly in the meat and the dairy supply. NSAIDs or ibuprofen use, too much of that, gut infections like Candida, parasites, protozoa, which we're going to talk about next, the overconsumption of sugar and caffeine, and we cannot underestimate the damaging effects of chronic stress. So when you take this into consideration, you can see why most of us even very healthy people need to rebuild our gut lining from time to time to really enjoy optimal health. The most common leaky gut test is called the lactulose-mannitol test. There are also excellent blood and saliva tests out there that check for intestinal permeability, which is another name for a leaky gut. This is root cause healing. Most thyroid problems start in the gut. So while traditional MD might just look at and treat the thyroid, they might not be getting to the real issue, and this wastes time, money, and emotional energy. Test number four is the gut pathogen test. This is a stool test that most functional practitioners can run to identify a pathogenic imbalance, be it Candida, fungus, E. coli, other bad bacteria, could be a parasite or protozoal infection. If you have bad bugs in the GI tract, it's usually a root cause for hormonal imbalances, especially PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome, which is a root cause of infertility because what happens in PCOS will drive progesterone down preventing the implantation of the egg while it drives testosterone up. So that was the case of my 30-year old client Haley. You know, got health truly is the seed of human health. You cannot heal any type of hormonal imbalance within unhealthy gut. And Haley's a true testament to that. We healed her gut, and she was able to conceive. She had PCOS and then didn't anymore. But there's more to the story, unfortunately, she miscarried. This was years ago right as I was learning about the MTHFR genetic mutation, Haley found out she had it. She compensated for it as she healed from her miscarriage and then the next time was able to conceive again, and she now has not one but two beautiful healthy children. Okay, test number five is the stress and sex hormone test. I'm finally ready to talk with you about hormones because we've gotten the information we needed about food sensitivities, leaky gut, and pathogens, which means we've covered all aspects of digestive health, and now we can see what's really happening in the endocrine system. If you want to know where your client stands hormonally beyond the tests their MD has run, then I recommend having them do or order a four point saliva panel that includes both the sex and the stress hormones. Because here the focus is going to be on adrenal health, and as you're learning in your program, adrenals are the gas tank of the human body, and adrenal fatigue is a near epidemic in our overstimulated world. This test will look at precursor hormones cortisol, DHEA, and pregnenolone to see how their body is creating and managing stress hormones. This is especially important when your client complains of things like chronic exhaustion, lightheadedness, insomnia, anxiety or depression. Then you use your health coaching skills and have them reengage in their primary foods to manage stress and increase self-care like it's their job while teaching them how to truly nourish their bodies so they can climb their way out. More often than not, when you refill the adrenal glands, the sex hormones will balance out on their own because now they have a gas tank to pull from, and the client will be able to conceive naturally and quickly. Test number six, the thyroid, temperature, and pulse test. This is an easy free one you can do at home, and you can print this out because we have a handout in this module. The thyroid plays a crucial role in ovulation, which is why we're going to go over in detail what foods to eat to balance the thyroid in another lecture. This test is easy and free, like I said, you can do it at home and it's included here, it's a wonderful thing to do with all of your clients because the thyroid is basically the furnace in the thermostat of the human body. The thyroid being off can prevent ovulation and therefore fertility or cause a miscarriage. You can test your thyroid by taking your temperature when you wake up in the morning and before you go to bed at night, as well as 20 minutes after each meal. It should be around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit or 37 degrees Celsius. In the morning, it can be a little lower, maybe could be a point lower since we've been sleeping and not moving. But if it's lower than not, it's worth it to go get lab work because your thyroid is probably sluggish or not functioning well, and you may have irregular periods, and you may not be ovulating. And, you know, you can't get pregnant if you're not ovulating. I'm also a big fan of getting a blood test for the entire thyroid, including TSH, T3, T4, as well as TPO which are the antibodies, and reverse T3 to see if a thyroid issue started with stress via the adrenal glands because the thyroid and the adrenals are a team. This was the case of Tori, age 41, she came to me with hyperthyroidism after her second baby, and she wanted to conceive a third. So we used the temperature and pulse test to make sure her foods, the ratio of carbs, protein, and fat she was eating at every meal were actually working for her. And we brought down her stress hormones with adaptogenic herbs like rhodiola and Ashwagandha, as well as antioxidants that are just pure medicine for the thyroid, selenium, and alpha lipoic acid. Pulled her off of soymilk, and her thyroid balanced out on its own in three short months and helped her easily get pregnant with baby number three. Test number seven is the pH test. Last but not least, another free easy test you can do at home. pH stands for potential hydrogen, and it refers to how acid or alkaline our body chemistry is. A woman's pH must be balanced if the sperm is to survive to fertilize the egg. Most Americans are too acidic, thanks to the standard American diet. And many MDs are not going to look at pH for good reason because the PH of our blood never ever changes. It has to maintain a very narrow window of 7.25 to 7.45 to keep us alive. So this is why I suggest you have your clients test the PH of their urine and saliva to see how hard are their bodies working just to maintain that narrow window of blood pH. And if they're working very hard, they're likely leaching precious minerals from the bones to maintain that unchanging pH in the blood. Mineral deficiencies will knock the thyroid out of balance, they will create other hormonal imbalances as well as nervous system problems because now what's happened is we've created an inhospitable environment for implantation, and conception becomes much tougher. There's a pH handout included in this module to help you test amounts of your own pH and to help your clients do the same. Now I understand that all this can be overwhelming for you and even for your client. So again, you don't have to use all of these tools. But it is important to know about them and to be able to recommend them when it comes to fertility after age 35 especially. We all need to address our weak links and to give ourselves a tune up to make the process really exponentially easier. I've worked with so many clients who have gone on such an emotional journey as well as spent tens of thousands of dollars and failed IVF. You can help them avoid that process or at least make it gentler and more effective. The stakes are incredibly high when it comes down to the difference between having a child and not having a child. So I hope this information helps you change the course of someone's life and hopefully, many people's lives. Thank you so much for watching, and I will look forward to seeing you in the next lecture.
