RANTS - 98% Chimp
Torah Kachur: If you believe humans could not have possibly evolved from chimpanzees, you're
absolutely idiotic? No. Ignorant? No. Correct? Yes.
That's right; humans didn't evolve from chimpanzees. But we definitely shared a common ancestor.
The most recent number suggests humans and chimpanzees diverged about 5.4 million years
ago. It's not like our common ancestor gave birth to a chimpanzee baby one year and a
human baby the next, as some creationists would like you to believe.
The shift of the two populations was slow and gradual, culminating into the drastic
differences we see now. But our similarities cannot be denied. Tool use, games, creativity,
and even love have been observed in all of the great apes. Chimps can even laugh,
and express emotions using sign language!
So what makes humans so special? OK, we have abstract thought, morality, and language.
But those are only important because we decided that they were. Humans and chimpanzees are
98 percent identical at the level of DNA. Humans are primates. We are cousins of the
gorilla, the orangutan, the bonobo, and the chimpanzee. We are all evolutionary cousins
related by our DNA. I, for one, am proudly 98 percent chimp.
