>>Sometimes riders ask us, "Can I drink in your car?"
Or, "Can I smoke in your car?"
The answer is no,
but I don't want to use the word no,
because I don't want to upset the rider.
This is a situation where
we need to pay attention
to what's going on in the car
before starting the trip.
We also have to be
patient with the rider.
If I show up and the rider
is drinking alcohol or smoking cigarrettes,
I'll say,
"Unfortunately my company policy
does not allow open
beverages or smoking in the car.
I'm happy to wait
while you finish outside."
And then I'm
willing to repeat it calmly,
especially if my
rider insists on drinking.
Let's break
this one down a little bit.
What company are we talking about?
Your company.
You're the boss of your own
company when you drive for Uber.
We say "our company"
so the rider does not try
and negotiate their way into
being able to drink or smoke.
If all else fails,
I can say to the rider,
"Let me cancel at no charge,
and your next driver
might be able to help you out."
If someone is drinking alcohol
or smoking in the car
after you start the trip,
you still need
to stay calm and patient.
Don't blame the rider.
Instead, offer to pull over
so the rider could finish outside.
