What are Basic Human Rights?

“Is access to clean, safe water for drinking a basic human right?" Before we can even attempt to answer this one must first ask the question, "what are basic human rights, and who gives them to us?" If we look to "The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights" we read that "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood." If we look to the 1776 "Virginia Declaration of Rights", we see a number of basic human rights listed. "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Both statements defend the equality and dignity that we are all born with, however, one states that we just have them, while the other says that they have been given to us. If we believe in the words of the Declaration of Independence, that we are indeed endowed by our Creator with these certain inalienable rights, meaning that these rights cannot be taken away from us, and we combine them with the words of "The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights" that we should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood, then when dealing with this question "Is access to clean, safe water for drinking a basic human right?", we can come to the conclusion that it is indubitably a basic right for a human being to be nourished by the most sustaining substance on earth, clean H2O and in the spirit of brotherly love, it is our responsibility to help out our fellow man in accessing it.
