Science in Seconds - Code breaking

Science in Seconds Know Everything RAVES - Code Breaking Torah Kachur: I've decided on a new profession - code-breaker. It's seriously sexy and sounds dangerous - as close to James Bond as a geek can get. Actually, cryptographers are the geekiest of geeks, captains of the nerd herd, leaders of the dork grade. They're mathematicians. Cryptography involves amazingly clever keying devices and complex mathematical algorithms that decode even the most elaborate ciphers by going through every possible combination and permutation. Code-breaking was the major driving force for the invention of the computer when Alan Turing devised the bombe machine - a giant code-breaker designed to crack the Nazi Enigma machine. One of the most famous previously-unsolved codes was encrypted in 1801 by Robert Patterson - oops, I mean this guy - who sent a message to Thomas Jefferson. Patterson was clever: he wrote the message on a vertical grid then scrambled the horizontal rows and inserted nonsense letters. Clever, but not clever enough. This past year, a mathematician at Princeton broke the code and found that it stated the preamble to the Declaration of Independence of the U.S. That makes him totally sexy. Want to be 007 geek chic? One of the most famous encrypted messages in the world exists on the "Kryptos" sculpture at the center of the C.I.A. in Langley Virginia. So far, both amateur and professional cryptographers alike haven't been able to solve it. So go on, and get at it, agent.
