Please Wellcome, Anthony Griffith The following story was filmed live at U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen on Februay 28-2003 The theme of the night was "When Worlds Collide" uh... Charles Dickens classic tale Tale of two cities starts off with the phrase: it was the best of times, and it was the worst of times. In 1990 I moved from Chicago with my family to L.A. to seek my fame and fortune and in a couple weeks i get two importants phone calls, one from the tele coordinator for the "Tonight Show" offer me to have spot as a comedian on the “Tonight Show”, and the second call was that my daughter's doctor had called to said that her cancer had resurface a year prior she was diagnosed with cancer and we fought it and it went into remission and now is back For that next year my life was pretty surreal cause such two different personalities, during the day I only keep my daughter at home with me I would have to learn CPR and how the work a heart monitor and administer medicines and all this technical terms and take a back and forth excuse me, to get her platelets and blood and check upon and at night I would go from club to club with the talent coordinator and i would worked on my set the challenge perfect I would meet with (…) like George Wallace and Seinfeld and Roseanne and I thought that everything was great because we beat the cancer before and we can beat it again and this is the first time that I was gonna be in from of millions of people on the Tonight Show The first time on the Tonight Show I was extremely nervous all I like to think about when I was on back stage being introduces, don't mess up don't mess up, whatever do, don't mess up and the curtains opens and there is six hundred people and the cameras and Johnny is over there and the band is over there and I don't konw what I said for the next six minutes but I get six applause breaks and the great part of that night was that I was going to my car and I met Johnny who was going to his car and it was just a private moment between us in the parking lot of him saying you are very funny you're extremely funny, start working on the second Tonight Show cause I want you back. But at time I get the official call for my second Tonight Show my daughter, my daughter was admitted to the hospital If you don't know about cancer, when it comes back, it comes back hard, it's like beating up again being gainer for the first time and it's coming back, and it's coming back minor and stronger and it's coming with his friends so on in order to compensate for that you have to raise the chemo, you have to raise medicine and you have to raise radiation which is difficult for in a adult but she was only two, so she is bald, which is doesn't mind cause every kid in the ward is bald and she think is a part of life and she can't keep her food down and this you're not prepare for this. There's not books, there's no home at class to teach you how it deal with this and you can't go to there because in the black world a there is taboo is reserve for rich white people. So you're trying to figure it out what to I do, maybe something that I did, maybe something my wife did, maybe my doctor diagnosed erroneously something but at night I still have to be a comic, I have to work on the Tonight Show because that's what I'm do I'm a clown I'm a clown whose medical bills are raising whose one step for been a victim whose one step forget his car rip out and I have to come out and make you laugh because no one wants to hear the clown in pain because is not funny, and my humor it's been becoming dark and it's biting and it's becoming hateful and the talent coordinator is see there's a problem because the NBC is all about nice and just everything is gonna be ok and we started to buck horns because he wants everything light and I wanna be honest and tell life and I'm hurting and I want everybody else to hurt cause somebody is to play for this So I pack up and I suppress my anger and I form in develop nice cute routine for the second Tonight Show and I got applause breaks and I get ask to comeback for third time and I perfected my third set and the doctor ask me to come in and I know something is wrong because even the doctor is crying and doctors don't cry. And he said we've done all we can have there is not to us to do and I said how much time she have and he said at the most, at the most six minutes six weeks, I'm sorry. And I should plan for that and I thinking how do I plan for that? I had a plan to buy her her first bicycle I had a plan to walk to school I had a plan to take pictures of her or her pram I had a plan to walk down the hall to get married. How I gonna play in bike her and dress to be a berrie bear and I'm trying to keep it together cause I'm the man, and the man on the house and I don't wanna cry but it's coming and I'm trying tell my way tell myself ,Thony I'm trying to back the world just give me a chance, just give a chances, let me take a breath just stop for a minute I wanna call my parents and tell them, what do I do? I don't know what I do, I will grew up man and I don't know what to do. And a man a voice came up like (...) for training day men aren't gave up! You think you're the only one loses your kid today? 25 kids walk to here with cancer, only 5 walking out. They (...) don't seek come (...) in thirty minutes, this is life welcome to the real world and it was right. So I buck up because that's what I supposed to do And on my third Tonight's Show by that time my daugther died and I had six applause breaks that night. No wonder I was morning no wonder that I care less about that Tonight's Show or Johnny Carson. In 1990 I had three appearances with legendary Johnny Carson and a total of fourteen applause breaks and I would have gave it all if I can choose to have one more day sharing a bag french fries with my daugther. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Thank you

Anthony Griffith lives in the mountains of California at 5,000 feet elevation in an animal protected community. It's much different from the inner city of Chicago where he used to live, but he still travels doing stand-up. He says that the overwhelming positive response of him telling his story at The Moth has prompted him to write my "One man show and pen other short stories" now in development.
