You have been given crutches because of an
injury or operation, to your leg, knee, ankle, or foot.
This short video will show you how to
stand up and sit down with crutches.
The instructions are the same whether you are
allowed to weight-bear on your injured leg, or not.
We recommend that you always try to sit in a
chair with arms, to help stabilise your movement.
We will begin by showing you how to stand.
Hold both crutches in one hand,
and to the side of your body.
Push up from the chair using your free hand.
Once standing, transfer your crutches into both hands.
Make sure you are balanced before walking.
We will now show you how to sit.
Stand in front of the chair.
You need to be able to feel the chair
against the back of your legs.
Hold both crutches in one hand,
and to the side of your body.
Hold the arm of the chair with your free hand.
Lower yourself gently onto the chair.
Holding your injured leg in front of
you may reduce any discomfort.
