Learn Anything, Anywhere - Esplori Intro Presentation
I’m sure you’ve heard of MOOCs, or Massive Online Open Courses. The Khan Academy, Coursera, Udacity, EdX, Udemy and other great companies, institutions, and non-profits putting up their courses online, many of them for free. This is revolutionising the way we look at learning particularly in a world where the cost of education is soaring, the pace of technological innovation is so rapid that the job market is constantly changing and by the time you graduate, what you studied for might already be obsolete.
I’ve written a whole book about it and I’m certainly not the only one who thinks this way.
The problem is that most of these courses are from one particular country and one particular language.
Yet, 73% of the world does not speak any English and who knows how many Sal Khan or other great teachers could be out there if only they had the chance. Meet Esplori.
Esplori means “to seek out knowledge", and it’s the dream I’ve been working on for some time.
Imagine one place where all the world’s knowledge on video is aggregated and made available in every language on earth. And not just K-12 and college level but anything that’s worth learning, at any age. There might be somebody in India doing a course on how to become a solar engineer using local knowledge and resources or a teacher from Brazil would like to have a course she found from a school in Poland translated.
The possibilities are really endless. I believe we’ve only begun to scratch the surface of the potential for a global classroom and I think amazing things will emerge if we just allow people to join in the conversation.
Most of these courses will be free, some of them might cost or maybe a whole different business model will be worked out; but the bottom line is this:
All of the world’s knowledge should be made available to anyone on earth regardless of their language, geographical location, or financial status. To make this dream come true, we’re partnering with Dotsub, the leading technology and services provider in the world for captioning and translating online videos that for years has worked with Fortune 500 companies as well as non-profits and schools from all over the globe. We’ll be using all of Dotsub core technology and build on top of it a global platform for learning.
But more than just a platform, Esplori will be a community where people will share knowledge and skills, become learners, mentors and educators. They will create a healthy ecosystems of teaching and learning where people of any age can come together, help each other out, earn a reputation, ... while also making it economically sustainable for everyone.
I think we’re moving towards a world where, more than earning a degree, what really matters is learning and applying new skills, being constantly engaged in the act of learning, and earn a reputation because of what you’ve accomplished.
We’re super excited about this project and we can’t wait to start rolling it out to the public. If you’d like to know more or help make this happen, visit esplori.net and join the global conversation.
