We flew from Lima, Peru to a town
in the mountain plains where we were met by three
care employees
We went to schools in the highlands
that serve indigenous Quechua children.
Beautiful schools and these girls are all
very very proud to be Quechua and it is a great time
to be here in Peru because for the first time
the government is at least trying to embrace this notion
of a bilingual education within the curriculum that places
emphasis on the importance of your heritage.
This has never happened before and Karen
is right in the center of it.
So we went to two schools
we saw Quechua dancers, poets, singers, these kids
with costumes and in their school uniforms.
They hugged us, they kissed us. The principals were there
their proud mothers were there and it was stunning.
These are two care programs, they provide school supplies
They provide school uniforms for families who can't afford them
But most importantly, they train the teachers
They do ''outreach'' kind of group sessions
with the parents to kind of reinvigorate them
to embrace their past, and all this is
is being done in a time in Peru when being Quechua and being indigenous
is a hot-button issue.
