And now it's time to summon the birds. Birds Yeah, but I never have a good answer that doesn't start offending people. Hi! I'm Raymond McCauley. Chair of Digital Biology at Singularity University. And we are here for Ask an Expert. The show were we take your questions from the twitterverse about all the topics that we covered at Singularity. Hello bird. Come to us. Ah, thank you so much. Here is Kim de Mora's question. "Can you dissociate the reality from hype in terms of the future of CRISPR human therapeutics ? Well I think that is hard to do because it's hard to overhype something that I think is going to have a huge effect. CRISPR is a new kind of DNA or genom editing. That is better, faster and cheaper than some of the old things we used. It's what I liked to call "Drag'n'Drop" DNA editing. You can come in, you don't have to have a huge amount of lab technique. You don't have to know what you are doing to go and design. You say "Here is some DNA that I've got, Here is some DNA that I want." You plug it in an app, literally an app. What we are going to end up doing with CRISPR? We are already using it to engineer a variety of microbes Plants to do GMO food We can go ahead and engineer mammals We're making maybe, even bigger, better, stronger babies And this is something we get a lot of questions on It's so important to respect nature and know what's going on at all times Lol, got that sucker Here is a question from Juan Pablo Salazar A Or Salazara? Nah Salazar A, we're going to go with that. How can the biotech overcome poverty in the countries where there are the lack of investment it that So I think this is interesting because

S1:E9 Raymond McCauley, Chair of the Biotech Track at Singularity University and Co-Founder and Chief Architect for Biocurious, answers questions about Biotechnology and Bioinformatics or Digital-Biology. Some of the topics covered this week; CRISPR gene editing, biohacking out of poverty, and why his #%*@ don’t stink.

Raymond McCauley is a scientist, engineer, and entrepreneur working at the forefront of biotechnology. Raymond explores how applying technology to life — biology, genetics, medicine, agriculture — is affecting every one of us. Raymond develops and advises a variety of companies and organizations, including Genomera (crowd-sourced clinical trials), Vecoy Nanomedicines (synthetic biology anti-virus platform), Androcyte (longevity research), and Nanokit (DNA origami).
