Unit 10 - The society of information

0 (0 Likes / 0 Dislikes)
The society of information Today’s world is referred to as “the society of information”. In a very short period of time, the so called Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have changed the ways people think, interact with others, spend their leisure time, and, what it is more important, the way teachers teach and students learn. Such new technologies as the mobile phone, the Internet, scanners, videoconference, and other electronic devices have turned the homo sapiens into a homo videns or, as some say, into a homo zapping. If this is so, if industrial and wealthy societies have altered their means of production and connecting with each other, it is understandable that education has also diversified its methods of teaching and learning. Present-day educational concepts such as learning to learn, learning by doing, self-instruction or autonomous learning are directly linked to major twentieth-century developments in technology. And this is not the end; over the next years the use of technology combined with other measures will dramatically change the nature of the teaching/learning process. The growth of knowledge in any field, and clearly in second or foreign language teaching/learning, is rapidly outstripping any individual's ability to remain up-to-date. Knowing how to access information rather than memorising information is central to coping with this rapid change. We, as teachers, are committed to helping our students to become independent lifelong learners able to make intelligent and informed decisions. So, one of the skills our students need to acquire is not only how to access and use resources (in print, pictorial, and electronic formats) but also select, interpret, evaluate and use information from all sources and media. ICT and, mainly, Internet offers great possibilities for locating and using resources, educational sites, specialized directories, databases and so on which help foreign language students to learn and teachers to teach.
