It's no exaggeration to say that there's no other musical instrument in the world
quite as influential and ubiquitous
as the piano.
It has been an essential tool for composers,
the bedrock of summer complement,
and the instrument that brought music to the masses.
The invention of the piano in 1700
was one of Western music's most spectacular discoveries.
Without it, we wouldn't have had some of our greatest music,
classical, jazz or popular.
To understand how revolutionary the piano was,
you need to meet the ancestors:
Practically all modern instruments are derived
from four basic family roots:
things you hit,
things you bow,
things you pluck,
and things you blow.
Believe it or not,
all orchestral instruments started this way.
In the bush,
in the cave,
in the tribal village
or in the sacred and ritual gathering place.
There's one family of instruments though...
There's one family of instruments, though, that came along much later:
they weren't around in the time of hunter-gatherer man,
and owe their existence to incredible ingenuity and imagination.
