Workstyle Freestyle 035- 'Diversity'

*music playing* Hello Hoxbies! Hello Hoxbies! Welcome to Workstyle Freestyle, with me, Alex Hirst. And with me, Lizzie Penny. And the postman was just outside watching me dance! Outside this window right here, so it's a strong start to the week...! Oh, the postie knows you love what you do though, Lizzie, so I'm sure he won't be surprised. But why were we dancing, I hear you ask. We always dance, it's a regular occurance... We were dancing because we today are going to be talking about diversity and inclusion, and one of the sayings that we often talk about is that people say, 'diversity is being invited to the party and inclusion is being asked to dance'. So that's what we're going to talk to you about. We should probably talk upfront about our own diversity, shouldn't we, Alex? We probably should. I mean, we are representative of gender equality, um, but I think we probably recognise that we are not reflective of the true diversity that exists within the Hoxby community, I think it's fair to say. We know that, but we don't think that stops us from fighting for it, and believing in it. So, hopefully you agree. But what does it mean? What is the issue with diversity and inclusion at the moment? Lizzie - what do you reckon? Yea, so we think that diversity is all too often seen as just 'ticking a box'. And we think that if you are really going to behave properly in regards to both diversity and inclusion, then it's about the way that you operate as an organisation everyday. From the small things, to everyone being part of the fun, through to the really big and important things, like everyone having the same equal opportunity to advance their career. So we think that, actually, from the tiny things through to the biggest things, that's what this is about. And obviously that's what we've built Hoxby to be a bit of a pioneering organisation in. We sure did. We built it from scratch to be deliberately and purposely inclusive, on the basis that we wanted to create a fully diverse workforce, and for the benefits that that can bring. But we're really interested to know how other organisations are doing it, and the things that you're seeing within organisations, around inclusion, and specifically, diversity too, and we'd be interested to hear your views of what comes first. We obviously think that creating a culture of inclusion, and a structure that enables it, is what will ultimately achieve diversity within our workplace, but what are you seeing?
