Suma's Journey: From Kamlari to New York City

Suma Tharu traveled over 8000 miles
from her village in Nepal to New York City
On stage at Lincoln Center
she sang of her experience in indentured servitude.
I was really happy when I heard because I hadn't even traveled much in Nepal.
I thought, even though I haven't traveled in my own country, I'm going to get a chance to go to New York.
Before I sang, I was worried about whether I'd be able to d it, whether something would go wrong.
I reminded myself that I came with this desire from Nepal to do this song.
On opening night 5000 global leaders packed the concert hall
I saw that the hall was filled, that people were everywhere. A lot of lights were focused on me.
While I was singing, I was worried about whether people were understanding what I was singing.
When I stopped and everyone clapped and whistled and cheered, I felt that they understood.
If I hadn't been educated I wouldn't have been able to come sing in front of all of these people.
I wouldn't be here. I owe that to Room to Read.
