Science in Seconds - Solar Flares

Science in Seconds Know Everything RUMOURS - Solar Flares Brit Trogen: Maybe because it's the year 2012 and we're on the lookout for an apocalypse, or maybe because they're just so pretty: solar flares have been gaining some heat lately. Made up of bright spots on the sun, they eject clouds of particles into space that may or may not be plotting to kill us. The reason for the latest worries is partly due to the unusually powerful flares in recent months. On Valentine's Day, for example, Sol showed his love with an X‑ rated gift, literally. As opposed to weak C‑ class, or middling M‑ class, X‑ class flares are the most powerful type of solar storm. The increased energy is because the sun follows an 11 year solar cycle, which is currently set to peak in late 2013 or 2014. Extreme flares produce highly charged particles of solar wind, called coronal mass ejections, or CMEs. A strong CME can cause the lovely effect of a brightened aurora borealis, as well as the less lovely effects of damage to our satellite grids and interference with the GPS of long flights. But Earth is protected from the most damaging radiation by our atmosphere, and since we always have at least two days' notice before the CMEs arrive, we can usually predict how strong they'll be, where they're likely to hit, and how to prepare ourselves accordingly, like we do for hurricanes and other storms. So as far as doomsday goes, I'd save my concern for nuclear war, zombies, and that virus that killed Gwyneth. Courtesy of Science in Seconds – No profit/ad use allowed. The strongest solar flares in years are heading for our planet... In other words: doooooooom! Or then again, maybe not. What's going on with these solar storms, and what does it mean for us?
