DEAR HSM | 2/4/2018

in our community this past week we got news and not many of you know, and if you don't know, there was a student at Corona del Mar High School decided to take his own life. And where words really can't express how you're feeling and the emotions of this community, it's really hard to articulate maybe even sing a song like that who can stop the Lord Almighty. I wanted to address you guys, and often times when I teach, I just teach and things kind of come out, and I wanted to ultimately write you guys a letter, to express my heart to you—grieving students and ultimately to our community. So, you guys won't mind, I love to read that letter to you guys today in light of the burden of our community this time. Dear students in Orange County and my family Mariners HSM, how can one grapple, how can one truly understand or come to know or make sense of what has come to pass this week? You can't. This Orange County life is strict, unforgiving, tormenting, tiresome, and stressful. A 4.2 GPA is standard performance on the sports field is tried and the desire to be liked is more highly regarded than the desire to make a difference. This utopia of a place where image is king, money is our master, and business is superior, it's clear that it's not all it's cracked up to be. What education, achievement, and unpopularity lack I hope you know, is glaringly attainable in the story of King Jesus. I've gotten too many vigils, responded to too many phone calls, and prayed over too many families or friends of people who have left this world on their own accord too soon. It's time that we as a community, begin to move the needle somehow. And how, I don't know. But here's some things I do know: dear students in Orange County, he left the 99 for the one, he loved the outcast, he showed grace to the sinner, he healed the leper, He included the foreigner, He embraced the crying, he purposed the useless, he saved the drowning, he invited the uninvited, he dignified the poor, he called the lonely, he loved the unlovable and he died for heaven's sake, and he died for those, who willingly rejected Him. You dear students are the one; students in Orange County, you are the one the one he's running after. He's trying to tell you the one without a car, while your friends are driving that you're pretty cool. He's trying to tell you the one sitting on the bench you're pretty cool. He's trying to tell you the one, who has an eating disorder that you're pretty and cool. He's trying to tell you the one who feels alone in the crowd that you're seen. He's trying to tell you the one whose acceptance letter never came through that you're not a failure. He's trying to tell you the one who feels like you've made too many mistakes that you are forgiven. He's trying to tell you the one, who is underappreciated you have something to offer. He's trying to tell you the one, who can't win their parents approval, that you are approved of. He's trying to tell you the one who's been objectified that you are more than that. And He's trying to tell you the one who is shy that you belong. And to all of us, you're loved, showed grace, healed, included, embraced, purposed, saved, and invited; you're dignified, you're called, you're loved, and you are worth dying for. In this dark world there will be difficulty students. But take heart for King Jesus has overcome the world. It's in the story where we find ourselves. And let me put it this way; maybe in your schools you will experience difficulty. In your families you're going to experience difficulty. On your sports teams you will experience difficulty. In your community you will experience difficulty. In your group chat you will experience difficulty. In your social status you will experience difficulty. But take heart, He's overcome the world. So, today, to the student wrestling with their life, let me give you 13 reasons why. Reason number 1 you have a purpose. Reason number 2 you have a purpose. Reason number 3 you have a purpose. Reason number 4 you have a purpose. Reason number 5 you have a purpose. Let us sink in for a moment, reason number 6 you have a purpose. Reason number 7 you have a purpose. Reason number 8 you have a purpose. Reason number 9 you have a purpose. Reason number 10 you have a purpose. Reason number 11 you have a purpose. Reason number 12 you have a purpose. Reason number 13 you have a purpose, and what is it? To sing your lungs out with your best friend in your car, to cut off a study session early, to go get some [Inaudible] with your besties, to take a break from Instagram, to go to the beach, to laugh at those silly dad jokes or maybe to leave a note on a person's car window saying you love them, to invite an old friend to lunch, to stand up for the bully, to forgive, to be a friend to others you so badly want for yourself. Dear students in Orange County this is your purpose, not to fix anyone but to point people to the One who has already fixed it, to live in your identity and not have to earn it, to point people to the One whose life is truly life. Take heart, students in Orange County, for King Jesus has overcome. Sincerely, your Pastor Alex. And during this time I hope you can begin to turn your grieving into hope.
