The Titanic, nicknamed "the unsinkable"
was built in the shipyards of Belfast, Ireland
from 1907 to 1911
On April 10th 1912 it departs from Southampton
While the tragic sinking of the Titanic is still shocking and a bit unnerving,
many of the Titanic facts are quite interesting
The ship was still so brand new
when passengers boarded it on April 10, 1912
that the paint was still wet in some spots.
Among the property reported as lost on the Titanic .
were over 3000 bags of mail and an automobile.
On April 11th, 1912 The Titanic leaves Queenstown for New York
and sails through calm, clean water for 3 days.
On April 14th 1912 the lookouts see an iceberg dead ahead.
The iceberg strikes the Titanic on the starboard side of her bow at 11.40 pm.
The ship was loaded with only enough lifeboats to hold half of the Titanic passengers.
Some of the 20 lifeboats were lowered to the waters only half-full.
3 hours after hitting the iceberg the last section of the Titanic sank forever into the icy waters of the Atlantic
The Titanic's total capacity was 3547 passengers + crew.
The largest percentage of survivors came from first class passengers
Most of the women and children lost in the sinking
came from second and third class
Most of the crew also died
included Captain Smith
who planned to retire after the Titanic voyage
The remains of the Titanic were found
and many mysteries unveiled...
The most notable discovery was that the ship had split apart
Possibly there was an implosion
Surrounding the wreck a large debris field was found with pieces of the ship
