2874 Being recalled for assessment after routine breast screening

After you have attended the breast screening unit, you will receive your results in the post within two weeks. However, if you have had a mammogram previously at another hospital, you may have to wait a little longer, as we have to compare the new mammogram to your old results. A number of women will be asked to undergo some further tests. This is obviously a worrying time, but in the majority of cases, the results of the further investigations are all normal. About four in every one hundred women will need further tests, and of these only one is found to have breast cancer. If you need to have some further tests, your results letter will invite you to an assessment clinic. During your visit you will be seen by members of the Breast team, including the consultant radiologist and a radiographer. Our breast care nurses are also available to answer any questions you may have. You should expect to be in the hospital for at least two hours whilst the investigations are performed, but it is sensible to buy a parking ticket for three hours just in case of any delays. Many ladies like to bring a partner, friend or relative with them. Please be aware that they will not be allowed inside the examination room, but can be there to keep you company. On the day of your appointment, please do not use any deodorant, body sprays or moisturisers on the skin on or around the breast as this can alter the quality of the images. We recommend that you wear a skirt or trousers, rather than a dress, as you will have to undress to your waist. Firstly, some patients may need further mammograms to provide further detail on the area of concern. The investigations are likely to include a breast examination. The doctor will examine both of your breasts to see if they can identify any changes in your breast tissue. A breast ultrasound scan uses a small probe which uses high frequency sound waves to look for abnormalities, such as lumps, fluid collections and the thickening of tissue. Gel will be put on your breast to produce the image. This should not be painful. Finally, the doctors may need to take a small sample of your breast tissue. This may be done using the ultrasound machine to guide the doctor, or by using a procedure called a Stereotactic Breast Biopsy these are explained in a separate video. It is up to you whether this is done during the appointment, or arranged for another time.
The results are usually available within a week, and a follow-up appointment will be arranged for you. However, if we don’t need to perform a biopsy then you will be given results of your further imaging at the time of your appointment. It is also important that you ask us about anything you need to know or about any worries you have. Our contact details are provided at the end of this video and our breast care team are here to support you.
