I want to begin this presentation talking about the first person that created the science of happiness, and the science of happiness at work, because we're going to look for strategies and ways to step ahead despite what we're living, to be better than before. This person, whom I met when I used to work as Director of the Happiness Institute of the Coca.-Cola Company, is Martin Seligman. Before thinking about happiness, he had to live through 30 years of his life, working and studying unhappiness. Can someone learn to be unhappy and then learn to be happy? Are there things happening that can make us more unhappy? Let me tell you that the feeling or feelings of unhappiness, for example, if we talk about fear, it activates a part of our brain, a very specific one, called amygdala. It's something like this. Obviously, here, you can see that this is not a proper x-ray, but it's a way to show you that the amygdala is the Simpson picture. It's a very little part of our brain, which is responsible of the very negative emotions, ones that it considers can cause us a big problem. When we fear, for example, the amygdala cuts the more complex thought, making us act quickly without thinking, if we are in a dark alley where we heard a noise we think might be dangerous; or get paralyzed, trying to avoid people from seeing us, or even run away without knowing what the sound was, or get ready to fight without thinking any further; therefore, the amygdala is our brain's heritage. A long time ago, we used to live in a very hostile environment, where any animal or noise could mean a great danger, making us react very quickly, in a heartbeat. Also, the amygdala is the part that when we lose social connections, maybe like right now, it analyzes we are losing a role or a status on our work team, it's also activated to let us know we're in danger. It prevents, if you see the picture next to the Simpson one, our brain from acting and from helping us with its full potential. So, the brain, when we're relaxed feeling confidently and under control, we are happy. There are eight components of happiness and happiness at work. Some of them are the ones I mentioned. When we're happy with these components, we can use our brain's full potential. This is the key, specifically now, because we don't live in an ancient world, exposed to constant danger that comes from the outside, but in this world we need to be very innovative, very creative to collaborate, etc. These are the things or results we get when we use our brain to its full potential. So, it's important to know that unhappiness, fear and so on are useless in such a complex world, where we need our full potential. One question people often ask me is: Does happiness follow success? Or, does it begin the road to success? Is it a consequence of our success? Or, does it come before it? Well, according to some research from various universities, Cris has announced that later someone from London Business School is going to speak. There are many researches from London Business School about happiness and results from companies. In the United States, there's Wharton Business School, and institutes like Gallup, or consultants like Happy Spaces to Work, have conducted big researches about how happiness has an impact on the results from a company. Here you can see, the companies with better conditions for people to be more satisfied at work, get three times more innovation and much quicker. Since they're using the full potential of each person, and each collaboration groups, they get 10% more satisfaction between their clients. And more satisfied clients can guarantee a long-term success. All of this make them more collaborative, be more creative and get more satisfied clients, in the end, on average and at least 5% more in sales, in comparison with other companies, where the conditions for satisfaction and happiness at work are worse. Happiness comes before success. Both, personal and professional success. However, there are companies that doubt about it, thinking it's better to put success before happiness, because it just means higher sales, more money or more bonuses for the employees, is enough to bring happiness. So, that's what the science of happiness is for, to learn how to do it, because there are many things on our hands, and we can change greatly our level of happiness. How much? Well, as you can see, genetics are 40% of all our happiness, so, we could think that what happens to us is just a matter of luck, that all we need is to win the lottery, to work in an excellent company, to earn an excellent salary, or that our marriage needs to work, well, all that is just 10%. Here, there's an exception to make. It can vary on average, therefore, when things start to happen they take all our attention, causing a major influence on us. 10% is when we move forward in time diminishing their importance, getting to see that through time things fall into place and we realize they were less important than when they happened. When things pass the effect is huge, but with time, it gets down to 10%. This left us with 50%, that depending on our choices give us room to work, to decide, to try new things, big enough to impact on our happiness. If this is the case, then, now is the moment for companies and organizations, to use everything we know and create the conditions to be better, to be more satisfied, to innovate more, to create better relationships and trustful environments, it's time to create these conditions and move forward from what we're living. We must do it now. The feelings of happiness can be recognized if someone has dwelt on the negative. You appreciate the sun just after the rain. You appreciate health after you recover, from the flu or another illness. Anyway, negative stuff makes us appreciate and get a taste of what's positive, so, dwelling on the negative guarantees that we'll also appreciate what's positive. The next advice is to recognize what's positive to start looking for a solution, firstly, we need to go out and talk. If we cannot, a video call might work, but we need to look for an alternative. We are social beings, so, as a species, we have learned to fix things together, not alone. To get out of what's negative, we need to start talking to someone. The Harvard University did the vastest research about human happiness, it has been under study for many generations, some presidents were in it, there also have been rich people, poor people, people who had it all but lost it all and vice versa. From all the external things that cause an impact in your life, the research found out that the relationships a person has with others is the most important key element to happiness. Now you know why. The external things that happen are just a 10%. The eight components of happiness that we can activate in the companies or in our lives, have 50% of the capacity of causing an impact on our happiness. Crises are a special time to rethink all of this. No company is perfect. All companies, mostly the old ones, have taken good and bad decisions, they have stopped designing and thinking about the culture, but they have been developing in different places and cultures. Is a crisis the time to rethink all of this? Is it a time to measure, scientifically, how we are in each one of the eight components of happiness at work? And what can we do to improve them? How do we do that? Well, we all are leaders at our job, so, as leaders, we have the responsibility to know that the way we act cause an impact on everyone else. We have mirror neurons that take silent information from people, without them telling us what they're feeling, what they're thinking about us, what they're transferring to us. This is our duty as leaders. Like leaders we have a big responsibility. The moment is now. You are the leaders you're looking for, so, let's start right now to increase happiness around us, for us and for the people we influence on.
