I think I better stop ranting, you know, I've just caught myself let me give you a poem as well this is the last Sonnet to Orpheus by Rainer Maria Rilke and it's to hold all the gifts of uncertainty Quiet friend who has come so far, feel how your breathing makes more space around you. (right here, right now) Let this darkness be the bell tower and you the bell. As you ring, what batters you becomes your strength. Move back and forth into the change. What is it like, such intensity of pain? If the drink is bitter, turn yourself to wine. In this uncontainable night, be the mystery at the crossroads of your senses, the meaning discovered there. And if the world has ceased to hear you, say to the silent earth: I flow. To the rushing water, speak: I am. oh, see, my brothers and sisters, that is the poet's awe that is the meaning of the pain we feel for the suffering in our world it means that we are inextricably, livingly connected it is our body being savaged, and we are not separate there is nothing that will ever happen no cowardice, no folly, no failure will ever sever you from the living body of Earth because that's what you are, and this Earth is waking up now so you rest in that knowing and know also then, that the pain that comes up is just a gateway into which you go, into a communion with the living world that is fearless and that the pain for our world and the love for it are but two sides of the same coin indeed, that is so now, I have to hurry up, I have two other gifts one is solidarity, for we're feeling we are talking about that solidarity with the lifeforms that are so beatiful, that you have a need to talk about from dolphin to praerie dog that we're waking up into the family to our kith an kin we're linking arms and this blessed unrest as Paul Hawken says, this largest social movement in history yes, and it's bringing in all other lifeforms, and we're linking arms and we must open our eyes, this is what I love about systems theory is it helps us see, but any good cook can see this when you make a stew or a soup that synergies, the emergent properties that come that is my substitute for hope, and it's a lot better because with every step you take something new happens, with every relationship, with every person you trust with every person you come clean to and clear to, something happens and now the last gift, well, that immensity of time you see we live in a time, when our karma, that is the consequences of our actions thanks to science and the industrial capitalism, extends into geological time reaches of time, hundreds of thousands of generations I learned this in my work around nuclear waste the decisions we make right now, in a multitude of activities will have direct effect on whether future generations, centuries and milennia from now will be able to be born sound of mind and body you'd better believe that so the future wants are therefore in our actions, right here, now feathered ones and scaled ones, and so are the ancestors by the same token I want you to feel them present, along with the brothers and sisters of all species and forms of beauty and strength and you can let them be yours you deserve that, because they are on your side, you see to be a human now in this darkness of uncertainty they're all plugging for us, please feel them! the ancestors and the future beings let them laugh in your ears, as well as slap you on the backside and pull you forward because we have great work to do

We live in a time of great uncertainty. Will the Great Unraveling of living systems overshadow a Great Turning to a life-sustaining society? We can't know. Joanna Macy doesn't give hope, which would only be false hope, she has something better: empowering in the face of difficult times.
