The Difficulties of Not Planting Paddy
My name is Junsin
I have three children, the oldest one is 25
the second one is 24 and the third one is 15
I already have two grandchildren
Before, I tapped rubber and planted paddy in the village
Because the rubber price dropped
I have not tapped rubber for 4 years and only planted paddy
Eventually I found work in a palm oil company
But my wife became sick
I returned to the village four months ago
I needed to come back to take care of my wife
Since I don’t farm or tap rubber
I need to buy rice every week and month
We can consume 5 sacks per month
In our place, it costs IDR 95,000 per sack
It is very hard
Because every week I need to take my wife to see the doctor
Our village is quite far
No doctors here
I need to buy medicines and pay for transportation
I can spend IDR150,000 each week for that
Because my kid is still in school
Every day, I need to give pocket money
We also need to buy books
If our rice is finished and we cannot buy
I have to borrow from neighbors who plant paddy
If I have money, I will pay for it
We sometimes receive rice from our relatives who farm
Because they feel sorry for my wife’s condition
Now I am looking for jobs; house construction, carrying sand, anything
In the future, I want to plant palm oil trees and farm again
So, our life would not be difficult like it is now
