Kai Liu, a vegetable purchaser and store clerk in a Sichuanese village, wakes up at 2:30am to visit the regional marketplace. After haggling for bulk vegetables, he and his partner head to Anren Middle School, where over 6,000 students have daily meals in the school cafeteria. Kai unloads the produce, then cleans and prepares the vegetables for the kitchen staff. At 6am, he heads home to open up shop. He and his wife live behind the convenience store that they manage together. Another part of his day is yet to begin.
