Transcript for A Brief Tour of Engineering Library History

Time Content
00:00 → 00:03

Engineering Library started its life in town,

00:03 → 00:05

in what is now the Arts Centre.

00:05 → 00:07

The current building by the Mushroom

00:07 → 00:09

dates from 1967.

00:09 → 00:11

This aerial shot is from 1982...

00:11 → 00:14

and this one's from 2009.

00:14 → 00:17

But let's go back to a time when

00:17 → 00:19

trees were shorter,

00:19 → 00:21

and photos were black and white.

00:21 → 00:24

Haere mai and welcome

00:24 → 00:27

to Engineering Library, 2006.

00:27 → 00:30

And 1979, when we still had separate desks

00:30 → 00:33

for reference and circulation.

00:33 → 00:36

The combined desk dates from 1998.

00:36 → 00:37

In 1968,

00:37 → 00:40

our olive green carpet was a novelty

00:40 → 00:42

and the librarian had brochures on hand

00:42 → 00:44

to explain its advantages to the curious.

00:45 → 00:48

In 1983 we didn't have access to E4 yet

00:48 → 00:51

but we did have a lot of journals in print.

00:52 → 00:55

By 2006

00:55 → 00:59

online journals had changed all that.

00:59 → 01:01

Of course, this is what

01:01 → 01:04

the library catalogue looked like in 1980.

01:04 → 01:08

Let's see that again in 2006.

01:09 → 01:10

No history would be complete

01:10 → 01:12

without Ruaumoko,

01:12 → 01:14

stolen in 2008 while at conference

01:14 → 01:17

and carved again in 2009.

01:17 → 01:19

The last stop on the ground floor is

01:19 → 01:22

the photocopiers.

01:22 → 01:24

In 1978, these were staff only.

01:24 → 01:25

Thirty years later,

01:25 → 01:27

students fend for themselves.

01:27 → 01:31

Now let's wander upstairs,

01:31 → 01:34

past the Lyttelton Tunnel drawings,

01:34 → 01:38

through the smoke-stop doors, to...

01:38 → 01:43

1967, when the building was brand new.

01:43 → 01:48

By 2006, level 2 is full of books, tables,

01:48 → 01:51

and of course potted plants.

01:51 → 01:54

This particular plant dates from 1982.

01:54 → 01:58

The other thing that dates from 1982...

01:58 → 02:00

...are the curtains.

02:00 → 02:02

We got new window shades in 2008.

02:02 → 02:06

That fire hydrant hasn't moved...

02:06 → 02:08

... and nor has the lift.

02:08 → 02:10

We're looking east here.

02:10 → 02:13

In 1984 a whole new section

02:13 → 02:16

was added onto the Library.

02:16 → 02:17

The new space for shelves

02:17 → 02:18

and a quiet study zone

02:18 → 02:21

was used for the first time in 1985.

02:21 → 02:23

Construction in 2008 gave us

02:23 → 02:25

a new lift and a new walkway.

02:25 → 02:27

And where construction will take us next -

02:27 → 02:29

who knows?
