The Second Sunday of Christmas |
| 00:03 → 00:06 |
Sunday, January 3, 2010 |
| 00:06 → 00:09 |
Let us rise for |
| 00:09 → 00:13 |
the reading of this morning's Sermon Text recorded for us |
| 00:13 → 00:16 |
in Luke's Gospel where we read from Chapter 1, |
| 00:16 → 00:19 |
beginning with Verse 68: |
| 00:19 → 00:23 |
"PRAISE BE TO THE LORD, THE GOD OF ISRAEL, BECAUSE HE HAS |
| 00:23 → 00:26 |
COME AND HAS REDEEMED HIS PEOPLE. |
| 00:26 → 00:29 |
HE HAS RAISED UP A HORN OF SALVATION |
| 00:29 → 00:33 |
FOR US IN THE HOUSE OF HIS SERVANT DAVID. |
| 00:33 → 00:36 |
(AS HE SAID THROUGH HIS HOLY PROPHETS OF LONG AGO), |
| 00:36 → 00:39 |
SALVATION FROM OUR ENEMIES AND FROM THE HAND |
| 00:39 → 00:42 |
OF ALL WHO HATE US -- |
| 00:42 → 00:46 |
TO SHOW MERCY TO OUR FATHERS AND TO REMEMBER |
| 00:46 → 00:49 |
HIS HOLY COVENANT, THE OATH HE SWORE TO OUR |
| 00:49 → 00:52 |
FATHER ABRAHAM: TO RESCUE US FROM THE HAND |
| 00:52 → 00:56 |
OF OUR ENEMIES, AND TO ENABLE US |
| 00:56 → 00:59 |
TO SERVE HIM WITHOUT FEAR |
| 00:59 → 01:02 |
IN HOLINESS AND RIGHTEOUSNESS BEFORE HIM ALL OUR DAYS." |
| 01:02 → 01:06 |
This is the Word of our Lord; Let us pray: |
| 01:06 → 01:09 |
This is the day that the Lord has made. |
| 01:09 → 01:12 |
Let us rejoice and be glad in it. |
| 01:12 → 01:15 |
Amen. |
| 01:15 → 01:19 |
The congregation is seated |
| 01:19 → 01:22 |
as Pastor Dave motions |
| 01:22 → 01:25 |
for them to do so. |
| 01:25 → 01:29 |
Dear Followers of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. |
| 01:29 → 01:32 |
I find the person of |
| 01:32 → 01:35 |
Zechariah, to be one of the most interesting |
| 01:35 → 01:39 |
people who prepared the way for God's Son |
| 01:39 → 01:42 |
to come into the world. |
| 01:42 → 01:45 |
I can't wait to have that opportunity in heaven |
| 01:45 → 01:49 |
to meet him and to discuss with him, |
| 01:49 → 01:52 |
because I think he had a most interesting |
| 01:52 → 01:55 |
challenge in his life. |
| 01:55 → 01:58 |
When the angel came to him and said: |
| 01:58 → 02:02 |
Your wife is going to have a son ... |
| 02:02 → 02:05 |
It just astounded him! |
| 02:05 → 02:08 |
It shocked him. |
| 02:08 → 02:12 |
And in his disbelief, |
| 02:12 → 02:15 |
God said to him: You're not going to speak. |
| 02:15 → 02:18 |
You're not going to speak until |
| 02:18 → 02:22 |
I ... allow you to. |
| 02:22 → 02:25 |
And Zechariah when he left that most Holy |
| 02:25 → 02:28 |
of Holy places, was left without |
| 02:28 → 02:31 |
the instruments to share the news |
| 02:31 → 02:35 |
of what had happened to him. |
| 02:35 → 02:38 |
Imagine witnessing an angel |
| 02:38 → 02:41 |
of God appearing to you and giving you |
| 02:41 → 02:45 |
such tremendous news, |
| 02:45 → 02:48 |
and the thing that you have always used to |
| 02:48 → 02:51 |
communicate with your family and friends and co-workers ... |
| 02:51 → 02:55 |
doesn't work. |
| 02:55 → 02:58 |
I wonder what people thought of Zechariah as he |
| 02:58 → 03:01 |
tried to convey to them |
| 03:01 → 03:04 |
what had happened. But when he went home |
| 03:04 → 03:08 |
to his wife, who was also going to be |
| 03:08 → 03:11 |
a part of the angel's message ... |
| 03:11 → 03:14 |
to share that message with Elizabeth. |
| 03:14 → 03:18 |
To convey to her ... |
| 03:18 → 03:21 |
what was of utmost importance. |
| 03:21 → 03:24 |
And then when that child is born and everyone |
| 03:24 → 03:28 |
is standing there wondering what they're going to name the |
| 03:28 → 03:31 |
child; what they're going to call the child ... Zechariah |
| 03:31 → 03:34 |
scribbles on a tablet ... |
| 03:34 → 03:37 |
John! |
| 03:37 → 03:41 |
And his conveyance is returned to him. |
| 03:41 → 03:44 |
That instrument that God had |
| 03:44 → 03:47 |
taken from him is restored. |
| 03:47 → 03:51 |
And he gets out the news. |
| 03:51 → 03:54 |
The words that he had been |
| 03:54 → 03:57 |
wanting to express for months |
| 03:57 → 04:01 |
come pouring out: Praise be to the God of |
| 04:01 → 04:04 |
Israel. He has accomplished |
| 04:04 → 04:07 |
His salvation. He has remembered |
| 04:07 → 04:10 |
what He promised to the forefathers of Israel. |
| 04:10 → 04:14 |
He has been mindful of that Covenant that |
| 04:14 → 04:17 |
He made with Abraham. When He came to Abraham as well |
| 04:17 → 04:20 |
and said: You and Sarah are going to |
| 04:20 → 04:24 |
have a child. |
| 04:24 → 04:27 |
Remember Sarah laughed. |
| 04:27 → 04:30 |
She giggled. But yet God kept His Word. |
| 04:30 → 04:34 |
And kept His promise and she held in her son Isaac ... |
| 04:34 → 04:37 |
she held in her arms, |
| 04:37 → 04:40 |
her son, Isaac ... |
| 04:40 → 04:43 |
knowing that God KEEPS His promises, |
| 04:43 → 04:47 |
and DOES what He says He WILL. |
| 04:47 → 04:50 |
As He PROMISED to Abraham that he would become |
| 04:50 → 04:53 |
a great nation. And that One of his descendents would |
| 04:53 → 04:57 |
bless all of the peoples of the world. |
| 04:57 → 05:00 |
And now Zechariah's son |
| 05:00 → 05:03 |
was going to be the forerunner of |
| 05:03 → 05:07 |
that Messiah. The One who was going to come and |
| 05:07 → 05:10 |
Zechariah could not help but praise God's Name! |
| 05:10 → 05:13 |
Because the Messiah |
| 05:13 → 05:16 |
was going to deliver His people from |
| 05:16 → 05:20 |
all of their enemies and was going to allow |
| 05:20 → 05:23 |
His people to serve Him in blessedness and holiness. |
| 05:23 → 05:26 |
And we remind ourselves of |
| 05:26 → 05:30 |
that fact today. That that |
| 05:30 → 05:33 |
same Savior has come to us. |
| 05:33 → 05:36 |
That that same Savior has fought |
| 05:36 → 05:40 |
the battles that we COULD NOT fight against the greatest |
| 05:40 → 05:43 |
enemies that we have ever had. |
| 05:43 → 05:46 |
The enemies of sin, death and Satan himself. |
| 05:46 → 05:50 |
Adam and Eve were no match for Satan |
| 05:50 → 05:53 |
and his guile, when he said: |
| 05:53 → 05:56 |
Look to the tree and they did. |
| 05:56 → 05:59 |
And they ate. |
| 05:59 → 06:03 |
We're no match for Satan either ... because he comes |
| 06:03 → 06:06 |
to us with the same lies. And you and I |
| 06:06 → 06:09 |
fall for them each and every day. |
| 06:09 → 06:13 |
Look! That will be good for you. And we run |
| 06:13 → 06:16 |
after it ... thinking this is what we need |
| 06:16 → 06:19 |
when it's the exact opposite |
| 06:19 → 06:23 |
of what God has said to us. |
| 06:23 → 06:26 |
He's (Satan's) always there, putting doubts in our heads, |
| 06:26 → 06:29 |
putting fear into our lives. |
| 06:29 → 06:32 |
And we can't fight him on our own. |
| 06:32 → 06:36 |
We know that because we fall into his temptations. |
| 06:36 → 06:39 |
And we willingly disobey God, but |
| 06:39 → 06:42 |
God's Son did not do that. |
| 06:42 → 06:46 |
He came into this world and |
| 06:46 → 06:49 |
stood with Satan face-to-face |
| 06:49 → 06:52 |
each and every moment of every day and withstood |
| 06:52 → 06:56 |
his temptations. Would not believe his lies. |
| 06:56 → 06:59 |
Did not give in to Satan, even |
| 06:59 → 07:02 |
when Satan tried to convince Him |
| 07:02 → 07:05 |
to throw Himself off of the top of the temple ... |
| 07:05 → 07:09 |
because God would protect Him. |
| 07:09 → 07:12 |
Or that he would give Him the entire world |
| 07:12 → 07:15 |
if Jesus would just bow down and worship him. |
| 07:15 → 07:19 |
But Jesus withstood those temptations, |
| 07:19 → 07:22 |
firmly planted in the Word |
| 07:22 → 07:25 |
and denied Satan the thrill of |
| 07:25 → 07:29 |
Him having succumb to sin. |
| 07:29 → 07:32 |
He was tempted in every way |
| 07:32 → 07:35 |
that we were tempted, yet HE DID NOT SIN. |
| 07:35 → 07:38 |
He faced the enemy DEATH for us. |
| 07:38 → 07:42 |
He willingly sacrificed Himself ... |
| 07:42 → 07:45 |
placed Himself into that tomb, |
| 07:45 → 07:48 |
so that that tomb would not be |
| 07:48 → 07:52 |
the end of our life. And that we would not be |
| 07:52 → 07:55 |
condemned to hell forever. |
| 07:55 → 07:58 |
He fought that battle and He was the Victor. |
| 07:58 → 08:02 |
He is the One who has saved us from our enemies. |
| 08:02 → 08:05 |
Zechariah proclaimed that loudly and clearly |
| 08:05 → 08:08 |
to all those people who were gathered there |
| 08:08 → 08:11 |
that day reminding them that God |
| 08:11 → 08:15 |
sent a Savior. |
| 08:15 → 08:18 |
And He is the One who has saved us and rescued us |
| 08:18 → 08:21 |
from everything that was out to destroy us |
| 08:21 → 08:25 |
eternally and condemn us forever. |
| 08:25 → 08:28 |
Zechariah praised His Name and |
| 08:28 → 08:31 |
we do that as well. |
| 08:31 → 08:35 |
That's our joy. That is our gladness. |
| 08:35 → 08:38 |
That's why we as God's people are placed on this earth |
| 08:38 → 08:41 |
as His children to return |
| 08:41 → 08:44 |
to Him in thanks for all that He has done for us. |
| 08:44 → 08:48 |
To praise His Holy Name. |
| 08:48 → 08:51 |
It is what gives us great comfort in this world and |
| 08:51 → 08:54 |
what a blessing it is, |
| 08:54 → 08:58 |
to be able to have voices to do that. |
| 08:58 → 09:01 |
To be able to have homes in which we are able |
| 09:01 → 09:04 |
to gather with our families without fear, |
| 09:04 → 09:08 |
that somebody's going to come |
| 09:08 → 09:11 |
beating down the door and stop us. |
| 09:11 → 09:14 |
That we can gather here in worship, bonded together |
| 09:14 → 09:17 |
on God's Word and |
| 09:17 → 09:21 |
sing the praises that lift up God's Holy Name. |
| 09:21 → 09:24 |
That remind us that He keeps |
| 09:24 → 09:27 |
His promises to us as well. |
| 09:27 → 09:31 |
That we encourage each other |
| 09:31 → 09:34 |
with that Word. We look at |
| 09:34 → 09:37 |
the example of Zechariah, as the head of his household, |
| 09:37 → 09:41 |
praising God. And fathers and men: |
| 09:41 → 09:44 |
What a blessing for us |
| 09:44 → 09:47 |
to be able to lead the worship in our own homes. |
| 09:47 → 09:50 |
To take out our Bibles and sit down |
| 09:50 → 09:54 |
with our family and read that Word |
| 09:54 → 09:57 |
and pray together for the needs that we have as couples. |
| 09:57 → 10:00 |
The needs that we have as families. |
| 10:00 → 10:04 |
To be able to share that Word and praise God |
| 10:04 → 10:07 |
for all that He has done for us. |
| 10:07 → 10:10 |
What a tremendous opportunity we have |
| 10:10 → 10:14 |
all of the time. |
| 10:14 → 10:17 |
We have everything at our fingertips ... |
| 10:17 → 10:20 |
to praise God because He has rescued us and |
| 10:20 → 10:23 |
He keeps us secure. |
| 10:23 → 10:27 |
He has taken us, as the Apostle Paul reminds |
| 10:27 → 10:30 |
the Galatians in our Epistle Lesson, |
| 10:30 → 10:33 |
as going from slaves ... to sons! |
| 10:33 → 10:37 |
To going from people who |
| 10:37 → 10:40 |
were encased in the shackles |
| 10:40 → 10:43 |
of sin, |
| 10:43 → 10:47 |
living in fear and total darkness. |
| 10:47 → 10:50 |
Slaves to everything that was |
| 10:50 → 10:53 |
ungodly and prone to decay. |
| 10:53 → 10:56 |
And He BURST forth from that grave |
| 10:56 → 11:00 |
and shattered those shackles that confined us. |
| 11:00 → 11:03 |
We are no longer slaves but |
| 11:03 → 11:06 |
we are the children of God. |
| 11:06 → 11:10 |
That wonderful blessing |
| 11:10 → 11:13 |
that Paul reminds us that we can run to God and |
| 11:13 → 11:16 |
cry: "Daddy"! Not: "Oh, I'm afraid." And we |
| 11:16 → 11:20 |
cower in fear and fall on the ground petrified. |
| 11:20 → 11:23 |
But we have access |
| 11:23 → 11:26 |
to God the Father. |
| 11:26 → 11:30 |
That we can go to Him. |
| 11:30 → 11:33 |
We can hear Him ... |
| 11:33 → 11:36 |
and listen to Him, |
| 11:36 → 11:39 |
and He comforts us with His Word. |
| 11:39 → 11:43 |
And He reassures us of our salvation. |
| 11:43 → 11:46 |
And He reminds us that our sins are forgiven. |
| 11:46 → 11:49 |
And He reminds us that there is an inheritance |
| 11:49 → 11:53 |
waiting for us that is out of this world. |
| 11:53 → 11:56 |
That goes beyond what we can imagine. |
| 11:56 → 11:59 |
Our heavenly home. |
| 11:59 → 12:03 |
His home. |
| 12:03 → 12:06 |
That He gives to us, |
| 12:06 → 12:09 |
His children. |
| 12:09 → 12:12 |
Out of nothing that we have done, but just because |
| 12:12 → 12:16 |
He is the One who loves us, |
| 12:16 → 12:19 |
and says: Here! I share |
| 12:19 → 12:22 |
eternal life with you. |
| 12:22 → 12:26 |
What joy that is! |
| 12:26 → 12:29 |
What blessing that is! What a reason |
| 12:29 → 12:32 |
for us to be shouting from the rooftops, the news |
| 12:32 → 12:36 |
that we have. The joy that is |
| 12:36 → 12:39 |
in our hearts. It covers over our lives. |
| 12:39 → 12:42 |
The blessings that God has given to us |
| 12:42 → 12:45 |
will be evident and will be seen in each |
| 12:45 → 12:49 |
and everything we say and everything we do. |
| 12:49 → 12:52 |
And we have to admit that that's not always easy for us. |
| 12:52 → 12:55 |
Our human nature gets tired. |
| 12:55 → 12:59 |
Our human nature doesn't think we're seeing results. |
| 12:59 → 13:02 |
Our human nature just wants to have time for us. |
| 13:02 → 13:05 |
It's like: |
| 13:05 → 13:09 |
The 12 Days of Christmas! |
| 13:09 → 13:12 |
Do you realize we're on Day 10 today? |
| 13:12 → 13:15 |
That we have still two days to go in that wonderful |
| 13:15 → 13:18 |
celebration that the ancient church |
| 13:18 → 13:22 |
expressed for 12 days |
| 13:22 → 13:25 |
the joy of God sending His Son. |
| 13:25 → 13:28 |
Yet only in our lives, we think: |
| 13:28 → 13:32 |
Oh, we gotta get that tree down. We gotta get these |
| 13:32 → 13:35 |
decorations put away. We gotta STOP all this Christmas stuff. |
| 13:35 → 13:38 |
The after sales-sales, after Christmas sales |
| 13:38 → 13:39 |
have come and gone. |
| 13:39 → 13:43 |
And so is most of our joy. |
| 13:43 → 13:46 |
So is most of the wonder of the season. |
| 13:46 → 13:49 |
So is most of the excitement that we had. |
| 13:49 → 13:52 |
We can't let that happen |
| 13:52 → 13:56 |
to our faith |
| 13:56 → 13:59 |
and what God has done for us. |
| 13:59 → 14:02 |
That blessing of Christ's forgiveness |
| 14:02 → 14:06 |
comes to us new each morning. |
| 14:06 → 14:09 |
It takes away |
| 14:09 → 14:12 |
the sins that we commit each and every day. |
| 14:12 → 14:16 |
It is there that we find joy. |
| 14:16 → 14:19 |
There that we find hope and there is our reason |
| 14:19 → 14:22 |
for thanking God for what He has done and |
| 14:22 → 14:25 |
praising His Name. When we're tired of praising |
| 14:25 → 14:29 |
God's Name, we need to go back and find out why. |
| 14:29 → 14:32 |
For the blessings that God has given us |
| 14:32 → 14:35 |
we need to dig deeper into His Word. |
| 14:35 → 14:39 |
Because there we will be reassured |
| 14:39 → 14:42 |
of our own salvation. We will see once again |
| 14:42 → 14:45 |
the beauty of God's plan. All that God |
| 14:45 → 14:49 |
did and worked for our salvation. |
| 14:49 → 14:52 |
As Paul told the Galatians: When the time |
| 14:52 → 14:55 |
had fully come, when God had set everything up, |
| 14:55 → 14:58 |
He sent His Son. |
| 14:58 → 15:02 |
And for that, we rejoice! |
| 15:02 → 15:05 |
And for that, forever, we serve Him, |
| 15:05 → 15:08 |
and praise His glorious Name. |
| 15:08 → 15:12 |
Amen. |
| 15:12 → 15:15 |
Let us rise. |
| 15:15 → 15:18 |
Now may the peace of God that |
| 15:18 → 15:22 |
goes beyond all of our understanding keep your |
| 15:22 → 15:25 |
hearts and your minds, and especially your lives |
| 15:25 → 15:28 |
in the one true faith unto life everlasting. |
| 15:28 → 15:31 |
Amen. |
