Text from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION, used

00:03 → 00:06

by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers.

00:06 → 00:09

Let us rise for the reading of this morning's sermon text

00:09 → 00:13

recorded for us in John's Gospel, where we read from

00:13 → 00:16

Chapter 6, beginning with verse 41:

00:16 → 00:19

At this

00:19 → 00:23

the Jews began to grumble about him because

00:23 → 00:26

he said, "I AM THE BREAD THAT CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN."

00:26 → 00:29

They said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,

00:29 → 00:33

whose father and mother we know?

00:33 → 00:36

How can he now say, 'I CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN'?"

00:36 → 00:39

"STOP GRUMBLING AMONG YOURSELVES," Jesus answered.

00:39 → 00:42

"NO ONE CAN COME TO ME UNLESS THE FATHER

00:42 → 00:46

WHO SENT ME DRAWS HIM, AND I WILL

00:46 → 00:49

RAISE HIM UP AT THE LAST DAY.

00:49 → 00:52

IT IS WRITTEN IN THE PROPHETS: 'THEY WILL BE TAUGHT BY GOD.'

00:52 → 00:56

EVERYONE WHO LISTENS TO THE FATHER AND LEARNS FROM HIM

00:56 → 00:59

COMES TO ME.

00:59 → 01:02

NO ONE HAS SEEN THE FATHER EXCEPT THE ONE

01:02 → 01:06

WHO IS FROM GOD; ONLY HE HAS SEEN THE FATHER.

01:06 → 01:09

I TELL YOU THE TRUTH, HE WHO BELIEVES

01:09 → 01:12

HAS EVERLASTING LIFE. I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE.

01:12 → 01:15

YOUR FOREFATHERS ATE THE MANNA IN THE DESERT,

01:15 → 01:19

YET THEY DIED. BUT HERE IS THE BREAD

01:19 → 01:22

THAT COMES DOWN FROM HEAVEN, WHICH A MAN

01:22 → 01:25

MAY EAT AND NOT DIE. I AM THE LIVING BREAD

01:25 → 01:29

THAT CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN. IF ANYONE EATS OF THIS BREAD,

01:29 → 01:32

HE WILL LIVE FOREVER. THIS BREAD IS MY FLESH,

01:32 → 01:35

WHICH I WILL GIVE FOR THE LIFE OF THE WORLD."

01:35 → 01:39

This is the Word of our Lord. Let us pray:

01:39 → 01:42

Glorious and Gracious God,

01:42 → 01:45

may the words of my mouth and the meditation

01:45 → 01:48

of each of our hearts be acceptable in Your sight,

01:48 → 01:52

our only source of hope and comfort. Amen.

01:52 → 01:55

The congregation

01:55 → 01:58

is seated

01:58 → 02:02

before Pastor Dave

02:02 → 02:05

begins the sermon.

02:05 → 02:08

Dear Followers of our

02:08 → 02:12

Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

02:12 → 02:15

How weak our human nature is.

02:15 → 02:18

How truly weak we are,

02:18 → 02:21

because even when we look

02:21 → 02:25

at the great heroes of faith in Scripture,

02:25 → 02:28

take for example the prophet Elijah.

02:28 → 02:31

I don't think we're going to argue that he is one

02:31 → 02:35

of those saints of the Old Testament who stands out

02:35 → 02:38

as someone who is powerful and

02:38 → 02:41

strong in the Word and in the presence of the Lord.

02:41 → 02:45

I mean we have that picture of

02:45 → 02:48

him standing before those hundreds of

02:48 → 02:51

prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel,

02:51 → 02:54

taunting them, mocking them,

02:54 → 02:58

laughing in their face

02:58 → 03:01

that all of their whining, yelling and hollering and

03:01 → 03:04

cutting themselves can't bring down the fire

03:04 → 03:08

from their gods to consume

03:08 → 03:11

their offering.

03:11 → 03:14

Yet after Elijah poured water upon water

03:14 → 03:18

on his altar and prays to God,

03:18 → 03:21

God ignites that and consumes his offering.

03:21 → 03:24

And in the strength and the power of God,

03:24 → 03:27

Elijah and his men go out and slay those prophets of Baal.

03:27 → 03:31

We see the mighty Elijah.

03:31 → 03:34

And yet immediately following that,

03:34 → 03:37

we hear what happened in our

03:37 → 03:41

Old Testament text.

03:41 → 03:44

He went out under a broom tree

03:44 → 03:47

and cried to God that he was the only one left.

03:47 → 03:51

All of Your other people ...

03:51 → 03:54

they've all fallen away.

03:54 → 03:57

They're all worshiping Baal. I'm the only one left.

03:57 → 04:00

God, I want to die.

04:00 → 04:04

How quickly the human spirit

04:04 → 04:07

can go from trust ...

04:07 → 04:10

to despair.

04:10 → 04:14

The same thing is true of

04:14 → 04:17

those thousands of people that Jesus fed

04:17 → 04:20

in that simple miracle with the loaves and the fish.

04:20 → 04:24

They followed after Him.

04:24 → 04:27

They wanted to spend time with Him. They sought

04:27 → 04:30

Him out for the miracles that they saw Him doing.

04:30 → 04:33

They came to Him and Jesus proclaimed that

04:33 → 04:37

He was the One who had come down from heaven.

04:37 → 04:40

And what does John record for us?

04:40 → 04:43

They began to grumble

04:43 → 04:47

among themselves. Who does HE think HE is anyway?

04:47 → 04:50

Isn't this Joseph's son? How can HE be the one

04:50 → 04:53

who's gonna stand up in front of us and claim

04:53 → 04:57

that HE came down from heaven?

04:57 → 05:00

How quickly and easily,

05:00 → 05:03

we as human beings, even after seeing

05:03 → 05:06

the WONDERFUL POWER and STRENGTH of GOD displayed,

05:06 → 05:10

can turn around

05:10 → 05:13

and focus only on us.

05:13 → 05:16

And only on

05:16 → 05:20

our own simple human reason

05:20 → 05:23

and only on our own selfish needs.

05:23 → 05:26

And get so turned around

05:26 → 05:30

that we can't listen

05:30 → 05:33

to what our Father has to say.

05:33 → 05:36

We cannot listen to what God the Father has in store

05:36 → 05:40

for us and has planned for us and all of the blessings

05:40 → 05:43

that He has given to us because we just

05:43 → 05:46

don't wanna hear it!

05:46 → 05:49

And Jesus is the One who stood in front of those people

05:49 → 05:53

and in history He stands before us

05:53 → 05:56

and points us to the Father,

05:56 → 05:59

directs us back to His Father.

05:59 → 06:03

Yes, He IS the Son of God who

06:03 → 06:06

left behind the glories of heaven

06:06 → 06:09

who was with God from the very beginning,

06:09 → 06:13

who with the Father and the Holy Spirit

06:13 → 06:16

came together and said: Let us create this world.

06:16 → 06:19

Let us do this in a miraculous

06:19 → 06:22

and special way, it was the Word

06:22 → 06:26

that God the Father used

06:26 → 06:29

to create the world. He said: Let there be light

06:29 → 06:32

and there was light!

06:32 → 06:36

That filled this planet with all sorts of wonderful and

06:36 → 06:39

marvelous animals and insects and birds and fish.

06:39 → 06:42

To show His creative power

06:42 → 06:46

is the One who took special care

06:46 → 06:49

in creating man

06:49 → 06:52

and creating woman.

06:52 → 06:56

And bringing them together

06:56 → 06:59

to support each other, to love each other,

06:59 → 07:02

to BE together

07:02 → 07:05

in God's love.

07:05 → 07:09

Jesus came from His Father and He showed

07:09 → 07:12

what His Father was to the world. There was no one else

07:12 → 07:15

who had ever seen God except the One who came from God.

07:15 → 07:19

Jesus told that to the group of Jews

07:19 → 07:22

that were there. Understand if you want to

07:22 → 07:25

see God and know what God is,

07:25 → 07:29

then you look at Me. Look at Me

07:29 → 07:32

and see 'cuz I was WITH God;

07:32 → 07:35

I AM God and I am here among you.

07:35 → 07:38

IMMANUEL.

07:38 → 07:42

GOD WITH US. And Jesus

07:42 → 07:45

wanted those people to STOP grumbling amongst themselves, to

07:45 → 07:48

STOP and put aside what they thought

07:48 → 07:52

they knew to truly HEAR

07:52 → 07:55

what God had to say.

07:55 → 07:58

That they wouldn't get past

07:58 → 08:02

the fact that they saw Jesus as the son of Joseph.

08:02 → 08:05

But He was the son of man.

08:05 → 08:08

Yes, born of Mary, but also

08:08 → 08:11

the Son of God. He had to be

08:11 → 08:15

both true God and true man to come

08:15 → 08:18

into this world and accomplish

08:18 → 08:21

the plan of salvation that the Lord had put in place

08:21 → 08:25

because human beings had brought sin into the world.

08:25 → 08:28

Adam and Eve in the

08:28 → 08:31

perfection of the garden,

08:31 → 08:35

STILL looked on the fruit that God had told them

08:35 → 08:38

NOT to eat of and thought it was better for them

08:38 → 08:41

to eat it. They thought that they knew better.

08:41 → 08:45

They thought that they wanted something more.

08:45 → 08:48

They took that fruit and ate it and brought sin

08:48 → 08:51

into the world. They conceived children that were

08:51 → 08:54

born in sin, with original sin.

08:54 → 08:58

And they passed that down from generation

08:58 → 09:01

to generation, to us

09:01 → 09:04

which we will pass on to the next generation.

09:04 → 09:08

The corruption of sin ...

09:08 → 09:11

it's punishment by death ...

09:11 → 09:14

that there is no escape for humanity

09:14 → 09:18

other than

09:18 → 09:21

the salvation that Jesus brought to this world.

09:21 → 09:24

Other than His own flesh ...

09:24 → 09:27

the very flesh that He would sacrifice

09:27 → 09:31

for the forgiveness of all sins.

09:31 → 09:34

The very flesh that

09:34 → 09:37

would be ripped apart

09:37 → 09:41

with the tortuous whipping that He endured.

09:41 → 09:44

The burden and the punishment

09:44 → 09:47

that should have been placed on you and on me

09:47 → 09:51

and on every person He

09:51 → 09:54

carried in His body.

09:54 → 09:57

The pains that He suffered

09:57 → 10:00

was your pain and my pain.

10:00 → 10:04

His flesh was torn apart

10:04 → 10:07

by those nails that placed Him on the cross.

10:07 → 10:10

His side was split open by that spear.

10:10 → 10:14

That came to show

10:14 → 10:17

that He was truly dead.

10:17 → 10:20

He offered Himself and His body as the

10:20 → 10:24

sacrifice for sin.

10:24 → 10:27

And the Father has brought

10:27 → 10:30

that information to us.

10:30 → 10:33

What a glorious and wonderful news

10:33 → 10:37

has come to us by the power of God.

10:37 → 10:40

We weren't looking for it. We didn't want it.

10:40 → 10:43

We were those enemies of God born in that original sin

10:43 → 10:47

running away from God and trying to do everything

10:47 → 10:50

that opposed Him. But God in His love

10:50 → 10:53

sent us His Holy Spirit,

10:53 → 10:57

gave us His Word.

10:57 → 11:00

Maybe it was through loving

11:00 → 11:03

parents who brought us to the fount ... font

11:03 → 11:07

to have ourselves baptized

11:07 → 11:10

using that sacrament of God,

11:10 → 11:13

having the Word applied with water.

11:13 → 11:16

Maybe it was a friend who shared with us

11:16 → 11:20

the truth of God's Word.

11:20 → 11:23

But it was God using those people

11:23 → 11:26

to give us

11:26 → 11:30

His gift of faith by the power

11:30 → 11:33

and the strength of His Holy Spirit.

11:33 → 11:36

And without that, we would be lost eternally.

11:36 → 11:40

Forever.

11:40 → 11:43

We would be condemned

11:43 → 11:46

to hell and all of its torments

11:46 → 11:49

eternally.

11:49 → 11:53

But yet we have heard what the Father has done.

11:53 → 11:56

We have listened to His Word.

11:56 → 11:59

We have looked to His Son.

11:59 → 12:03

We have been encouraged by the Holy Spirit

12:03 → 12:06

to BE one of His children. And as the Apostle Paul

12:06 → 12:09

reminds us: It's time for us to be

12:09 → 12:13

an imitator of God. To put into practice

12:13 → 12:16

the things that we know.

12:16 → 12:19

To stop being so consumed on ourselves

12:19 → 12:22

and to look outward to others.

12:22 → 12:26

To be kind and compassionate.

12:26 → 12:29

To get rid of all of the malice, the anger,

12:29 → 12:32

the bitterness, the rage and the brawling.

12:32 → 12:36

To love each other

12:36 → 12:39

and be compassionate

12:39 → 12:42

so that others will see Christ in us.

12:42 → 12:46

So that we, too, will point others

12:46 → 12:49

to God, with that one key thought ...

12:49 → 12:52

forgiving ....

12:52 → 12:55

the sins of each other

12:55 → 12:59

as Christ has forgiven us.

12:59 → 13:02

And we do need to remind ourselves of that fact daily.

13:02 → 13:05

How often we take pleasure

13:05 → 13:09

in the fact that daily that old Adam

13:09 → 13:12

within us is drowning our

13:12 → 13:15

baptismal waters.

13:15 → 13:19

To rise with Christ in His resurrection and

13:19 → 13:22

strength and power and commitment. To go out and

13:22 → 13:25

live the life of faith.

13:25 → 13:28

Daily we need that reminder.

13:28 → 13:32

To listen to our heavenly Father. To hear

13:32 → 13:35

what He has to say and to put that into practice

13:35 → 13:38

in our lives.

13:38 → 13:42

Otherwise we're gonna be like Elijah

13:42 → 13:45

who sat under the tree and wanted to die.

13:45 → 13:48

But yet God came to him with these words.

13:48 → 13:52

In that gentle whisper

13:52 → 13:55

He said: Elijah, get up.

13:55 → 13:58

Go back and do the work

13:58 → 14:01

that I have for you to do.

14:01 → 14:05

Jesus came to those people who were gathered together

14:05 → 14:08

in front of Him and said stop grumbling,

14:08 → 14:11

look to God,

14:11 → 14:15

see in Me the Bread of Life

14:15 → 14:18

that will give you eternal life.

14:18 → 14:21

Live in that joy. Live in that

14:21 → 14:25

presence. God comes to us in His Word

14:25 → 14:28

with the encouragement that we need to

14:28 → 14:31

sustain us to lead this life

14:31 → 14:34

into our life eternal.

14:34 → 14:38

Therefore I encourage each of us

14:38 → 14:41

to listen to the Father.

14:41 → 14:44

Amen.

14:44 → 14:48

Let us rise.

14:48 → 14:51

Now may the peace of God which goes beyond

14:51 → 14:54

all of our understanding keep your hearts

14:54 → 14:58

and your minds and especially your lives

14:58 → 15:01

in the one true faith unto life everlasting.

15:01 → 15:04

Amen.
