I got a call about 6 a.m.
Mrs. Diedrickson was looking for a way to make better classroom movies.
♫ ♫
Her students had been turning out the equivalent of glorified Powerpoints.
Yeah, her students were engaged, but she knew she had been doing little to teach them
to think critically and analyze media let alone become ... storytellers.
They were ignoring over 100 years of movie-making history and cinematic language.
But who was I to judge. I was just a film school dropout
and a 2nd grade teacher from a one-computer classroom.
Maybe I could just show Mrs. Diedrickson a few tips on things like
storyboarding, shot selection and composition, ... even lighting and sound.
I had to show her that video is a visual medium ... but enough about me.
And so you need to think differently than you think when you are writing something with text.
You need to think in terms of, "What is the audience going to see?"
How are you going to SHOW information visually
to an audience so that they understand your story.
[background] Red Leader this is Gold Leader
I'm going in to attack.
Oh, no, I'm going to hit ...
I've been hit, oh no!
[C-R-A-S-H!]
When you're storyboarding, you probably use a form like this ...
that already has the boxes on it for you.
[crumpled paper]
Better ... for you to imagine
the scene that you're going to shoot
and THEN decide where you're going to put the frame
Let's take a scene where a girl is going to visit a detective's office
and she's knocking on the door
