Time Content
00:00 → 00:12

[Applause]

00:12 → 00:14

Ali Abu Awwad, Robi Demelin.

00:14 → 00:16

Parents' Circle - Family Forum

00:16 → 00:41

[Applause continues]

00:41 → 00:44

I would like to read extract from the letter

00:44 → 00:48

which I wrote to the family of the sniper

00:48 → 00:51

who killed David, my son.

00:51 → 00:55

This, for me, is one of the most difficult letters I will ever have to write.

00:55 → 00:59

My name is Robi Damelin, and I am the mother of David

00:59 → 01:01

who was killed by your son.

01:01 → 01:05

I know he did not kill David because he was David

01:05 → 01:09

if he had known him, he could never have done such a thing.

01:09 → 01:11

David was twenty-eight years old

01:11 → 01:15

He was a student at Tel-Aviv university doing his masters

01:15 → 01:18

in the philosophy of education.

01:18 → 01:20

David was part of the peace movement

01:20 → 01:23

and did not want to serve in the occupied territories.

01:23 → 01:26

He had a compassion for all people

01:26 → 01:29

and understood the suffering of the Palestinians.

01:29 → 01:32

He treated all around him with dignity.

01:32 → 01:35

David was part of the movement of the officers

01:35 → 01:39

who did not want to serve in the occupied territories

01:39 → 01:41

but nevertheless, for many reasons

01:41 → 01:45

he went to serve when he was called to the reserves.

01:45 → 01:49

All my life I have spent working for causes of coexistence

01:49 → 01:52

both in South Africa and here.

01:52 → 01:56

After David was killed, I started to look for a way to prevent

01:56 → 01:59

other families, both Israeli and Palestinian

01:59 → 02:02

from suffering this dreadful loss.

02:02 → 02:05

I was looking for a way to stop the cycle of violence.

02:05 → 02:09

Nothing for me is more sacred than human life

02:09 → 02:13

No revenge or hatred can ever bring my child back.

02:13 → 02:18

After a year I closed my office and joined the Parents' Circle - Families Forum.

02:18 → 02:22

We are a group of Israeli and Palestinian families

02:22 → 02:25

who have all lost an immediate family member in the conflict.

02:25 → 02:28

We are looking for ways to create a dialogue

02:28 → 02:31

with the long-term vision of reconciliation.

02:31 → 02:35

After your son was captured, I spent many sleepless nights

02:35 → 02:37

thinking about what to do.

02:37 → 02:40

Should I ignore the whole thing or will I be true

02:40 → 02:42

to my integrity and to the work that I am doing

02:42 → 02:47

and try to find a way for closure and reconciliation.

02:47 → 02:49

This is not easy for anyone

02:49 → 02:52

and I am just an ordinary person, not a saint.

02:52 → 02:54

I have come to the conclusion

02:54 → 02:58

that I would like to try to find a way to reconcile.

02:58 → 03:01

Maybe this is difficult for you to understand or believe

03:01 → 03:06

but I know in my heart it is the only path that I can choose

03:06 → 03:10

for if what I say is what I mean, it is the only way.

03:10 → 03:13

I understand that your son is considered a hero

03:13 → 03:15

by many of the Palestinian people.

03:15 → 03:17

He is considered to be a freedom fighter

03:17 → 03:23

fighting for justice and for an independent, viable Palestinian state

03:23 → 03:25

but I also feel that if he understood

03:25 → 03:28

that taking the life of another is not the way

03:28 → 03:31

and that if he understood the consequences of his act

03:31 → 03:35

he could see that a non-violent solution is the only way

03:35 → 03:38

for both nations to live together in peace.

03:38 → 03:45

[Applause]

03:45 → 03:48

Our lives, as two nations, are so intertwined.

03:48 → 03:51

Each of us will have to give up on our dreams

03:51 → 03:55

for the future of our children, who are our responsibility.

03:55 → 03:59

I do not know what your reaction will be, it is a risk for me.

03:59 → 04:01

But I believe that you will understand

04:01 → 04:05

as it comes from the most honest part of me

04:05 → 04:07

I hope that you will show the letter to your son

04:07 → 04:10

and that maybe in the future that we can meet.

04:10 → 04:14

Let us put an end to the killing and look for a way

04:14 → 04:16

through mutual understanding and empathy

04:16 → 04:20

to live a normal life, free of violence

04:20 → 04:42

[Applause]

04:42 → 04:47

Now you can recognize that there are heros in the Middle-East

04:47 → 04:51

and peace is possible.

04:51 → 04:56

I want -- You know, I'm not going to tell you all of my life story.

04:56 → 05:00

I've been to prison for four years, my mother was in a prison for five years

05:00 → 05:04

for resisting the Israeli occupation.

05:04 → 05:07

and I grew up in a refugee family.

05:07 → 05:11

I lost my land, I lost my home, I lost many of my dreams

05:11 → 05:18

and in 2000 I lost my brother, and I was wounded by a settler.

05:18 → 05:27

So, I believe that the case of revenge inside me doesn't exist

05:27 → 05:32

because the killing of my brother was not a case of a personal case

05:32 → 05:34

it's a political case.

05:34 → 05:37

My brother has been killed because he was a Palestinian.

05:37 → 05:41

But I believe that I lost my brother but I didn't lose my mind.

05:41 → 05:43

It's so hard --

05:43 → 05:47

[Applause]

05:47 → 05:50

It's so hard to deal with all of this

05:50 → 05:53

but I believe on the other hand that people

05:53 → 05:57

cannot reconcile not because they don't want peace

05:57 → 06:01

but because they cannot live with the daily suffering

06:01 → 06:05

and they don't know where to put the anger

06:05 → 06:10

so I believe that causing a nation of suffering

06:10 → 06:14

if you bind a nation by building walls and barriers

06:14 → 06:17

we'll not secure another nation.

06:17 → 06:19

Maybe this

06:19 → 06:22

[Applause]

06:22 → 06:26

Maybe this could bring a Psychologists' solution

06:26 → 06:30

but it will not bring a human being solution that people can live

06:30 → 06:33

either together or side by side.

06:33 → 06:36

I believe that it's easy to judge people

06:36 → 06:38

it's easy to close people down.

06:38 → 06:43

My message, especially to the Jewish people wherever they are

06:43 → 06:47

that you are not my enemy, your fear is my enemy.

06:47 → 06:51

I am attacking today your fear.

06:51 → 06:55

So please don't throw your problems to the sea

06:55 → 06:59

because those problems learn how to swim.

06:59 → 07:02

You cannot ignore the whole reality by being

07:02 → 07:04

taking a side or being right.

07:04 → 07:08

It's very easy to be right because it's so hard to be honest.

07:08 → 07:12

You can go and you can find the truth.

07:12 → 07:14

The truth is millions of people.

07:14 → 07:17

It's not their destiny to keep dying by this way.

07:17 → 07:20

I'm not begging for peace, peace will come

07:20 → 07:23

and I remember that Gandhi once said

07:23 → 07:26

that there is no way for peace, peace is the way.

07:26 → 07:29

You first do peace without any conditions

07:29 → 07:32

then everybody will identify the word.

07:32 → 07:34

[Applause]

07:34 → 07:43

I believe [repeated]

07:43 → 07:47

I believe that material can easily damage material

07:47 → 07:49

Air Force can easily attack houses

07:49 → 07:53

but material will never succeed to damaging human beings.

07:53 → 07:56

Thank you.

07:56 → 08:06

[Applause]
