ICANN
IDNs example.test evaluation period
My name. My language. My Internet.
Hi. I'm Tina Dam at ICANN. I promised I would come back with some more information
about IDN evaluations, and today we have launched IDN wikis with fully localized URLs
where you can go and try out how your favorite application will be working with IDNs.
So, we've had IDNs at the second level for a long time, but we don't have them at the top level yet, and that's the new thing.
We have inserted 11 IDN top-level domains live in the root for this evaluation purpose,
so that you can go to one of these wikis and try things out.
See how it's working in your browser! You know, send the link to one of your friends,
see if their e-mail client can pick it up. See how things are working for you.
But don't forget to come back and tell us how things are working. Now here is how it's working --
We took the word "test" and we translated it into these 11 different languages.
And in front of dot test, we have the word "example" also translated into the 11 different languages.
The resulting URL of example.test in one of these combinations is going to a wiki.
Each wiki will have local content, so they are going to be fully localized in this local language,
and here's what it looks like!
So, if you can, type in example.test in one of these versions and go to the wiki.
And if you can't type that in because you don't have the keyboard or the software to accommodate
for one of these 11 different languages, then just go to http://idn.icann.org
It's not really ICANN's mandate to decide how application developers, such as browsers,
implement IDNs and make them work. But it's an important aspect that ICANN needs to know about
before we go ahead and allocate IDNs at the top level for production, where you can make registrations.
So go and try things out, and let us know how it's working.
In terms of when you can really make registrations and get your name in your language
and use that on the internet, the current allocation processes are looking to be finished
by mid-next year, 2008, but until then, you know, the wikis will provide you
with your name in a fully localized URL and using characters from your language
and for you to go and try out.
So thanks for listening, and go try this out! Thanks.
