BY RACHEL BOYD |
| 00:16 → 00:20 |
Hi there and welcome to my keynote presentation |
| 00:20 → 00:23 |
for the week in the classroom strand |
| 00:23 → 00:26 |
for the k12 online conference 2009. |
| 00:26 → 00:29 |
My name is Rachel Boyd and this presentation |
| 00:29 → 00:33 |
is titled a "Peek for a Week, Inside a Kiwi Junior Classroom." |
| 00:33 → 00:36 |
I am from Nelson, New Zealand |

I teach a year two class of six and seven year olds. |
| 00:39 → 00:42 |

and run professional development for our staff. |
| 00:45 → 00:48 |
In this presentation, we will take a look at the blend of |
| 00:48 → 00:52 |
21st century learning in my class of six and seven year olds. |

and get up in our very "20th Century" inspired classroom during a week. |
| 00:57 → 00:59 |
I hope you enjoy sharing in my class's |
| 00:59 → 01:02 |
learning and find the presentation interesting |
| 01:04 → 01:07 |

about this week, our classroom routines |
| 01:37 → 01:40 |
Oral language and we are looking at |
| 01:40 → 01:43 |
Listening and |
| 01:43 → 01:45 |
Speaking |
| 01:45 → 01:49 |
This week we are also during narrative writing. |
| 01:49 → 01:52 |
As well as reading |
| 01:52 → 01:55 |
Maths |
| 01:57 → 01:59 |
Inquiry Learning |

| 02:04 → 02:06 |
singing. |
| 02:06 → 02:09 |
For physical education we are looking at |
| 02:09 → 02:11 |
Fitness |
| 02:13 → 02:15 |
To top it all off, some Visual Art. |
| 02:15 → 02:17 |
I hope you enjoy our |
| 02:17 → 02:19 |
A PEEK FOR A WEEK IN ROOM 9 |
| 02:19 → 02:24 |
Just so you know throughout this presentation should you see the term WALT |
| 02:24 → 02:28 |
This simply stands for "We are learning to" |
| 02:30 → 02:33 |
ONLINE ORGANIZATION |
| 02:35 → 02:38 |
My classroom 9 has two major online features |
| 02:38 → 02:41 |
and they are basically digital students in their classroom. |
| 02:41 → 02:44 |
The page your are looking at here is our class blog. |
| 02:44 → 02:47 |
Simply it's our learning journey |
| 02:47 → 02:50 |
All sorts of information that we share for our conversation |
| 02:50 → 02:53 |
with the world, things we are learning about we invite obviously |
| 02:53 → 02:56 |
a lot of feedback and have conversations in that area. |
| 02:59 → 03:02 |
Our second online presence is our classroom wiki |
| 03:02 → 03:06 |
which we call our classroom learning hub. |
| 03:06 → 03:09 |
basically it's got every single link that my students |
| 03:09 → 03:12 |
need to use throughout the day. |
| 03:12 → 03:15 |
It's got lots of different buttons used for different purposes |
| 03:15 → 03:17 |
and everything my students need to do |
| 03:17 → 03:20 |
is only one click away. |
| 03:20 → 03:23 |
Perfect when you've got six year olds aren't typing. |
| 03:23 → 03:26 |
So, just start using our learning hub |
| 03:26 → 03:29 |
as a collection of links that we can do |
| 03:29 → 03:32 |
what we need to do on the internet quickly. |
| 03:34 → 03:37 |
Another way we organize our digital content |
| 03:37 → 03:40 |
for use every day in the classroom |
| 03:40 → 03:42 |
Is through this page here. |
| 03:42 → 03:45 |
This is actually our interactive whiteboard home page. |
| 03:45 → 03:48 |
Similar concept to before. It's got links |
| 03:48 → 03:51 |
everything that my class needs to use throughout the day. |
| 03:52 → 03:54 |
Some of them are links to interactive whiteboard files, |
| 03:54 → 03:57 |
and the recent links out to the internet. |
| 03:57 → 04:00 |
We are at the stage now where the students are able to |
| 04:00 → 04:03 |
very comfortably use the board and |
| 04:03 → 04:06 |
even run the morning program. |
| 04:07 → 04:09 |
CLASSROOM ROUTINES |
| 04:10 → 04:12 |
Each student in the classroom has |
| 04:12 → 04:15 |
responsibilities or classroom jobs they need to do every week. |
| 04:15 → 04:18 |
Two of these jobs involve our class blog. |
| 04:18 → 04:21 |
The first one is to check, the head counter |
| 04:21 → 04:24 |
to see how many people have been visiting our class blog. |
| 04:24 → 04:26 |
SHARE OUR CLASS BLOG FOR A REAL LIFE AUDIENCE |
| 04:26 → 04:30 |
So, before school and also at the end of the day. |
| 04:30 → 04:33 |
They need to log on to our learning hub and go and see what |
| 04:33 → 04:37 |
the head counter shows and make this number on a poster. |
| 04:37 → 04:41 |
and we also started to use the interactive whiteboard to display that as well. |
| 04:41 → 04:45 |
Earlier this year another one of my students had invented a new classroom job. |
| 04:45 → 04:50 |
And that is called the head counter calculation, believe it or not. |
| 04:53 → 04:56 |
Quite simply we wanted to work out how many |
| 04:56 → 04:59 |
people had visited overnight to our class blog |
| 04:59 → 05:02 |
and also over the weekend we hadn't been at school. |
| 05:02 → 05:05 |
So, that's another job we do every morning. |
| 05:05 → 05:08 |
One of our other classroom routines involves |
| 05:08 → 05:10 |
this www.wallwisher.com page. |
| 05:10 → 05:13 |
Before students have any ideas for posts |
| 05:13 → 05:16 |
and things we should be putting on our class blog. They can log on |
| 05:16 → 05:20 |
through the wiki hub post a sticky note up |
| 05:20 → 05:23 |
there and we check it when we are ready to put new content in. |
| 05:23 → 05:27 |
to our class blog. That's a responsibility they do before school. |
| 05:30 → 05:32 |
ORAL LANGUAGE |
| 05:35 → 05:37 |
SPEAKING |
| 05:39 → 05:40 |
LISTENING |
| 05:40 → 05:43 |
We start each day in our classroom with some sort of Oral Language activity |
| 05:43 → 05:45 |
be it listening or speaking. |
| 05:45 → 05:48 |
Mondays and Wednesdays this is class news so students are sharing |
| 05:48 → 05:50 |
about personal experience. |
| 05:50 → 05:54 |
What's become quite popular now, which is fantastic for junior students |
| 05:54 → 05:58 |
If the students have been doing something really really fun |
| 05:58 → 06:03 |
in the weekend they email in their photographs of what they've been doing. |
| 06:03 → 06:06 |
And we have those displayed over the interactive whiteboard |
| 06:06 → 06:09 |
while they are speaking. |
| 06:12 → 06:15 |
Each day we do an oral language listening task |
| 06:15 → 06:18 |
involving the website tvnz news. |
| 06:18 → 06:21 |
Basically it's New Zealand news online and |
| 06:21 → 06:24 |
they have video excerpts of |
| 06:24 → 06:27 |
just world wide news as well as New Zealand only news. |
| 06:28 → 06:32 |
Each day we watch a video clip of a news article. |
| 06:32 → 06:37 |
Before we watch we ask some questions about what we would like to be finding out. |
| 06:37 → 06:39 |
Then we listen for during the article for information |
| 06:39 → 06:42 |
about who, where, what, why, etc. |
| 06:43 → 06:46 |
After wards, we answer our questions |
| 06:46 → 06:49 |
or perhaps we go back through the video and pause it and review it. |
| 06:49 → 06:52 |
and often we've got more questions. So, then we go |
| 06:52 → 06:55 |
online and google the answer. |
| 06:55 → 06:58 |
And see what more we can find about the at the moment. |
| 07:04 → 07:06 |
WRITING |
| 07:07 → 07:09 |
NARRATIVE WRITING |
| 07:11 → 07:14 |
The past two weeks we've been learning to write narrative stories |
| 07:14 → 07:17 |
they would had lot of independent experience |
| 07:17 → 07:21 |
on how to structure these and what we need to include |
| 07:21 → 07:24 |
to have a really good narrative story |
| 07:24 → 07:27 |
This week we are actually working online with another class in New Zealand. |
| 07:27 → 07:30 |
In Aukland up in the North island. |
| 07:30 → 07:35 |
And we are using google docs to do our collaboration together. |
| 07:37 → 07:39 |
As we only have three computers, |
| 07:39 → 07:42 |
We've broken the class into 12 of two, three studnents |
| 07:42 → 07:45 |
and three groups will write online daily with |
| 07:45 → 07:48 |
with this other class in Auckland. We've done this for two weeks |
| 07:48 → 07:51 |
now and it has been really fantastic. |
| 07:51 → 07:54 |
Always frustrating at the start for the students because the story is taking shape |
| 07:54 → 07:59 |
after wards we have been able to learn a lot from each other. |
| 07:59 → 08:02 |
We also have the learning and teaching in the success criteria |
| 08:02 → 08:07 |
up against what they are writing up. so they can always check their own task. |
| 08:10 → 08:12 |
OUR PAPER KEYBOARDS |
| 08:12 → 08:15 |
Our class also has a set of paper keyboards |
| 08:15 → 08:18 |
Which we use when they are on the mat and I am doing modeling of the writing process. |
| 08:18 → 08:22 |
And we just integrated them to our writing sessions |
| 08:22 → 08:28 |
and we practice things like capital letters and post ups and things and |
| 08:28 → 08:32 |
and even thought the students have gone back to books to work with pen and paper |
| 08:32 → 08:35 |
it's still very useful experience and helps them to |
| 08:35 → 08:39 |
gain a little more familiarity with the keyboard and the computer. |
| 08:50 → 08:53 |
As well as our classroom blog we've also have a writing spot blog |
| 08:53 → 08:56 |
This is a special place we want our audience |
| 08:56 → 08:59 |
to notice our successes and not our mistakes. |
| 09:00 → 09:02 |
room9writing2009.blogspot.com |
| 09:02 → 09:05 |
It's a place where students can independently write without having |
| 09:05 → 09:09 |
spelling or their grammar or any of their work corrected by the teacher. |
| 09:09 → 09:12 |
The follow a visual help sheet like this one you see in here. |
| 09:12 → 09:16 |
To make sure they get their post online themselves independently. |
| 09:16 → 09:19 |
Writing blogspot blogs proved very popular with our students |
| 09:19 → 09:23 |
I think they enjoyed the independence. But, also as the rest of the class was writing |
| 09:23 → 09:27 |
in their books they get to write on the computer on the blog as well. |
| 09:27 → 09:30 |
I still conference with them just like normal. |
| 09:30 → 09:33 |
So, coming around and having their story and they still use |
| 09:33 → 09:38 |
their word sources to spell right in our case to help them with their spelling. |
| 09:39 → 09:41 |
HANDWRITING |
| 09:43 → 09:45 |
LETTER FORMATION |
| 09:48 → 09:52 |
Twice a week in the classroom we learn correct numeral and letter formation. |
| 09:52 → 09:55 |
I model it on the interactive whiteboard |
| 09:55 → 09:59 |
and the student come up individually and model it and we |
| 09:59 → 10:01 |
just celebrate each others successes there. |
| 10:01 → 10:04 |
For my more fluent hand writers |
| 10:04 → 10:07 |
once a week they get to go online and practice their typing |
| 10:07 → 10:09 |
instead of their handwriting. |
| 10:09 → 10:12 |
They're the students that very very capable |
| 10:12 → 10:17 |
they can form their letters and the numbers very very smoothly and correctly |
| 10:17 → 10:22 |
and their favorite site we visit is dance mat typing. (www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing) |
| 10:26 → 10:28 |
FITNESS |
| 10:34 → 10:37 |
Throughout the day we use a variety of |
| 10:37 → 10:40 |
youtube clips and videos |
| 10:40 → 10:42 |
for our daily fitness. |
| 10:42 → 10:45 |
These are simply to get us to join in to get us active |
| 10:45 → 10:48 |
to get our brains moving again and get our bodies moving. |
| 10:52 → 10:54 |
BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE AND FIT |
| 11:34 → 11:36 |
READING |
| 11:39 → 11:41 |
We have five reading groups in the classroom. |
| 11:41 → 11:44 |
Each day we follow the reading task board. So, each group knows |
| 11:44 → 11:46 |
what the are up to. |
| 11:46 → 11:49 |
While I am taking instructional guided reading groups, |
| 11:49 → 11:52 |
The other students are involved in non computer based |
| 11:52 → 11:55 |
and computer based activities. Some of these include |
| 11:55 → 11:59 |
the listening post, alphabet and board games, |
| 11:59 → 12:02 |
practicing their spelling and using spelling tiles or moving mini whiteboards. |
| 12:03 → 12:06 |
And whole host of other things. |
| 12:07 → 12:10 |
We use our three classroom computers extensively at reading time |
| 12:10 → 12:14 |
Scheduling groups to have time play a variety of online games |
| 12:14 → 12:17 |
to practice and reinforce their reading skills. |
| 12:17 → 12:20 |
These games are bookmarked by delicious bookmarking |
| 12:20 → 12:23 |
by our page which is easily accessible by clicking the link through |
| 12:23 → 12:26 |
from our classroom learning hub wiki. |
| 12:26 → 12:28 |
WWW.DELICIOUS.COM/ROOM9NELSONCENTRAL |
| 12:28 → 12:30 |
All groups are with me during guided and the rest of the class doing either a reading activity |
| 12:30 → 12:33 |
or playing a reading game online |
| 12:33 → 12:36 |
We also have pairs of students using the interactive whiteboard |
| 12:36 → 12:38 |
to play a reading game |
| 12:38 → 12:42 |
These games are especially for use in the day of the week |
| 12:42 → 12:45 |
and are reading relate to a class class need |
| 12:45 → 12:48 |
or something we need to practice and reinforce in reading. |
| 12:52 → 12:55 |
After morning tea each day the students have |
| 12:55 → 12:59 |
have a browsing independent reading time when most read print based books |
| 12:59 → 13:02 |
During this time each day, three groups of two students |
| 13:02 → 13:04 |
get to do their reading online. |
| 13:04 → 13:07 |
They can choose from a wide range of class blogs from |
| 13:07 → 13:10 |
around New Zealand and the world to read |
| 13:10 → 13:13 |
and to leave comments on. We also have visual help sheet |
| 13:13 → 13:16 |
will assist them to leave comments, create links, |
| 13:16 → 13:19 |
with other schools and communicate around the world. |
| 13:23 → 13:26 |
Another popular online literacy based site that my class uses daily |
| 13:26 → 13:28 |
is www.spellingcity.com |
| 13:28 → 13:31 |
Spelling city allows to practice their own set of spelling words |
| 13:31 → 13:34 |
that I have created online and I've found an engaging way. |
| 13:34 → 13:36 |
CORRECTLY SPELL ESSENTIAL BASIC WORDS |
| 13:38 → 13:40 |
MATHS |
| 13:43 → 13:46 |
Just like in reading, we also follow a task board in maths |
| 13:46 → 13:49 |
Students are grouped according to the addition and subtraction |
| 13:49 → 13:50 |
strategy level they use. |
| 13:50 → 13:52 |
CORRECTLY SOLVE ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION MATHS PROBLEM |
| 13:52 → 13:55 |
While I take a group for lesson the other students either complete and independent maths task or |
| 13:55 → 13:58 |
or play board or online maths games. |
| 13:58 → 14:02 |
Once again we have a button on our learning hub wiki |
| 14:02 → 14:06 |
links through to suitable maths games I've signed them out to literacy count |
| 14:12 → 14:15 |
One of the more popular maths sites that my class |
| 14:15 → 14:18 |
use is www.tutpup.com Everyone is signed up with their own user name |
| 14:18 → 14:21 |
and password. As a teacher I can keep track of |
| 14:21 → 14:24 |
their scores and they get to practice the addition |
| 14:24 → 14:27 |
subtraction, multiplication, and division in an online environment. |
| 14:27 → 14:29 |
(AND DID I MENTION IT'S COMPLETELY FREE!) |
| 14:29 → 14:31 |
competing with students all over the world. |
| 14:33 → 14:35 |
INQUIRY LEARNING |
| 14:35 → 14:37 |
CLEAN STREAMS |
| 14:38 → 14:42 |
Our inquiry topic has focused on list of clean streams. |
| 14:42 → 14:46 |
Students received the task of an animated movie |
| 14:46 → 14:50 |
in xtranormal to communicate the five features of healthy streams. |
| 14:50 → 14:52 |
xtranormal is fantastic |
| 14:52 → 14:56 |
for my students because if you can type you can make a movie. |
| 14:56 → 14:59 |
We also used the magic can button to make movie making a bit simpler. |
| 14:59 → 15:02 |
The results are fantastic |
| 15:02 → 15:05 |
You can view them on our class blog and our writing blog |
| 15:05 → 15:08 |
This week is also an exciting time for six of my |
| 15:08 → 15:11 |
year two students because they are running |
| 15:11 → 15:15 |
the weekly tech session or the "techi briki" we have with the teachers. |
| 15:15 → 15:18 |
to teach them new technical skills, and new |
| 15:18 → 15:21 |
ICT e-learning skills to use in their classroom. |
| 15:21 → 15:24 |
So, this week's been quite exciting for those six students |
| 15:24 → 15:27 |
as they ran the session on xtranormal. |
| 15:27 → 15:30 |
and showed the teachers and treated them and taught |
| 15:30 → 15:33 |
them to use their xtranormal and create their own movies. |
| 15:36 → 15:38 |
NIBBLES EMAIL AND STORY |
| 15:40 → 15:42 |
AFTER LUNCH EACH DAY |
| 15:45 → 15:48 |
After lunch each day we have our nibbles time |
| 15:48 → 15:52 |
This is a period of time when the students can finish any left over lunch. |
| 15:52 → 15:55 |
they've got. And during this time we also read our emails. |
| 15:55 → 15:57 |
WWW.GMAIL.COM |
| 15:57 → 16:01 |
Our emails come mainly from comments that are from |
| 16:01 → 16:04 |
our classroom and writing blog. What happens is, once |
| 16:04 → 16:08 |
they are approved and moderated they get redirected to to our class email. |
| 16:08 → 16:10 |
MAKE LINKS AND CONNECTIONS TO OTHER CLASSES. |
| 16:10 → 16:13 |
We have email monitors and these two |
| 16:13 → 16:16 |
students are responsible all week for |
| 16:16 → 16:19 |
checking the email with the class and reading |
| 16:19 → 16:21 |
the comments and sharing them with the class. |
| 16:21 → 16:24 |
At this stage we also visit other schools |
| 16:24 → 16:29 |
if they've left us a comment and visit their blog and leave them a comment as well. |
| 16:33 → 16:36 |
We check all comments we receive from New Zealand and |
| 16:36 → 16:40 |
plot them on our map, showing their name and location of the visitor. |

LOCATE WHERE IN THE WORLD OUR ONLINE VISITORS |
| 16:44 → 16:47 |
It's particularly exciting when we receive international comments |
| 16:47 → 16:50 |
especially when the visitors leave their geographical location. |
| 16:50 → 16:53 |
At this stage we then go on what we call the google air plane. |
| 16:53 → 16:56 |
and go visit their home town and see where they are located in the world. |
| 16:56 → 16:57 |
EARTH.GOOGLE.COM |
| 16:57 → 16:59 |
in relation to us. |

enriching, adding vibrancy |
| 20:06 → 20:09 |
to the learning of our students. |
