This project - supported by IICD - responds to the strong need for new leaders in Ecuador and for spaces in which young talented people can interact about new leadership styles based on transparency and social participation. Two local youth councils (Consejos Locales Juveniles) were installed in the municipalities of Bahía de Caráquez, Sucre (Manabí province) and Puerto Ayora (Galápagos). These CLJs received training in ICT tools and organisational issues. The use of ICTs in communication and information management is vital in bringing empowerment of these local youth groups about, notably through the set-up of public information corners installed at locations of easy access for local youth. IICD has been working with Jubileo 2000 since 2007 to employ ICTs in order to enhance awareness raising activities and to disseminate information with regard to the consequences of the current national debt situation. Further, it has been supporting efforts to engage specific social organisations more directly - notably those that are part of the National Debt Committee to strengthen their political impact in order to effectively address the debt problem in Ecuador. This project aims to strengthen the collective memory of Ecuadorian society of key moments in its social struggle through the digitisation of documents of various types that detail the main events in recent Ecuadorian history. The aim is to stimulate broad discussion about important social processes and to educate the younger generations about historical events over the past 25 years in a non-formal manner through the production of multimedia content. The project will strengthen ties with independent broadcasting organisations and other information networks throughout Latin America in order to exchange content and lessons learned about conserving and strengthening collective memory but also about the use of ICTs to achieve this. The goal of organisation Participación Ciudadana is to involve the Ecuadorian society in processes of social transformation. For this process to occur it is vital that citizens are informed properly and impartially. The underlying project aims to publish an electronic newspaper called Ciudadanía Informada with a national ambition but produced by regional news agencies in the provinces of Azuay, Guayas, Imbabura and Orellana in order to counterbalance the centralised, urban bias in Ecuadorian journalism. The newspaper is published on the web site of Participación Ciudadana www.ciudadaniainformada.com and focuses on political, juridical, legislative, electoral, citizenry, and Latin American matters. This film focuses on a project in Ecuador - run by Asociación Mujeres Juntas Parroquiales Rurales del Ecuador (AMJUPRE) and supported by IICD (www.iicd.org) - that looks to develop the capacity of local women who act as representatives of marginalised rural communities in Ecuador. The project aims to place local governance by women leaders of juntas parroquiales in Ecuador on the map through effective, participatory and democratic local governance through knowledge management and the use of ICTs in order to improve livelihoods of rural communities; reduce gender differences; and increase the self esteem of rural women.
