Text taken from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL

00:03 → 00:06

VERSION by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers.

00:06 → 00:09

Let us rise for the reading of this morning's sermon text

00:09 → 00:13

recorded for us in John's Gospel where we read

00:13 → 00:16

from Chapter 6, beginning with verse 51:

00:16 → 00:19

I AM THE LIVING BREAD THAT CAME DOWN

00:19 → 00:23

FROM HEAVEN. IF ANYONE EATS OF THIS BREAD, HE WILL LIVE

00:23 → 00:26

FOREVER. THIS BREAD IS MY FLESH,

00:26 → 00:29

WHICH I GIVE FOR THE LIFE OF THE WORLD.

00:29 → 00:33

Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves,

00:33 → 00:36

"How can this man give us his flesh to eat."

00:36 → 00:39

Jesus said to them, I TELL YOU THE TRUTH,

00:39 → 00:42

UNLESS YOU EAT THE FLESH OF THE SON OF MAN AND

00:42 → 00:46

DRINK HIS BLOOD, YOU HAVE NO LIFE IN YOU.

00:46 → 00:49

WHOEVER EATS MY FLESH AND DRINKS MY BLOOD

00:49 → 00:52

HAS ETERNAL LIFE, AND I WILL RAISE HIM UP AT THE LAST DAY.

00:52 → 00:56

FOR MY FLESH IS REAL FOOD AND

00:56 → 00:59

MY BLOOD IS REAL DRINK.

00:59 → 01:02

WHOEVER EATS MY FLESH AND DRINKS MY BLOOD

01:02 → 01:06

REMAINS IN ME, AND I IN HIM.

01:06 → 01:09

JUST AS THE LIVING FATHER SENT ME AND I LIVE BECAUSE OF

01:09 → 01:12

THE FATHER, SO THE ONE WHO FEEDS ON ME WILL LIVE

01:12 → 01:15

BECAUSE OF ME. THIS IS THE BREAD THAT CAME DOWN FROM

01:15 → 01:19

HEAVEN. YOUR FOREFATHERS ATE MANNA, AND DIED,

01:19 → 01:22

BUT HE WHO FEEDS ON THIS BREAD

01:22 → 01:25

WILL LIVE FOREVER.

01:25 → 01:29

This is the Word of our Lord. Let us pray:

01:29 → 01:32

Glorious and Gracious God, may the words of my mouth and

01:32 → 01:35

the meditation of each of our hearts be

01:35 → 01:39

acceptable in Your sight our only source of

01:39 → 01:42

Hope and Comfort. Amen.

01:42 → 01:45

After praying, Pastor Dave

01:45 → 01:48

motions for the congregation

01:48 → 01:52

to be seated. Dear Followers of our Lord and

01:52 → 01:55

Savior, Jesus Christ.

01:55 → 01:58

Jesus is still dealing

01:58 → 02:02

with that group of people who have witnessed

02:02 → 02:05

the feeding of at least 5,000 people. Remember that

02:05 → 02:08

group of people that had come out

02:08 → 02:12

to witness Jesus working.

02:12 → 02:15

To see Him perform the miracles that He had

02:15 → 02:18

done previously. They wanted to know

02:18 → 02:21

more about Him. They wanted to hear His message.

02:21 → 02:25

They came out because they were interested in what He

02:25 → 02:28

had to say. It was those people

02:28 → 02:31

who witnessed that miraculous feeding

02:31 → 02:35

of the 5,000.

02:35 → 02:38

It touched them so much in their lives that

02:38 → 02:41

they had to scramble after Jesus. They wanted to be

02:41 → 02:45

where He was. They tracked Him down. They got in boats.

02:45 → 02:48

They walked on the shore. They came out because they

02:48 → 02:51

were so enthralled by what He had said, but more so by

02:51 → 02:54

what He had done.

02:54 → 02:58

They wanted to make Him an earthly king.

02:58 → 03:01

They wanted to get from Him all of the things that they

03:01 → 03:04

would need for their physical existence.

03:04 → 03:08

For their life in this world. And we see how hard it was

03:08 → 03:11

for Jesus to take their

03:11 → 03:14

attention off of

03:14 → 03:18

that bread and fish that they ate.

03:18 → 03:21

And to put their thoughts and minds to

03:21 → 03:24

their eternal life.

03:24 → 03:27

They wanted a miracle from Him.

03:27 → 03:31

They wanted to know by whose authority He had spoken.

03:31 → 03:34

Hadn't they seen that miracle? Hadn't they witnessed

03:34 → 03:37

and ate that miracle themselves?

03:37 → 03:41

But yet as Jesus tries to get their focus,

03:41 → 03:44

off of that bread and fish, and onto eternal life ...

03:44 → 03:47

... all of a sudden ...

03:47 → 03:51

they seem to lose interest.

03:51 → 03:54

All of a sudden they really begin to challenge Him.

03:54 → 03:57

All of a sudden they want to know certain things.

03:57 → 04:00

They point back to their forefathers who

04:00 → 04:04

had that great and special bread in the wilderness,

04:04 → 04:07

of manna that came down from heaven.

04:07 → 04:10

But Jesus tries to get them

04:10 → 04:14

back on point even in our Lesson for today

04:14 → 04:15

because what

04:15 → 04:18

does He say to them about that manna?

04:18 → 04:21

Your forefathers ate that manna

04:21 → 04:25

in the desert and ...

04:25 → 04:28

they ... died.

04:28 → 04:31

... Even we,

04:31 → 04:34

need to

04:34 → 04:38

have that reminder in our life

04:38 → 04:41

that some day

04:41 → 04:44

death is not going to come near to us.

04:44 → 04:48

Death is going to COME for EACH

04:48 → 04:51

and EVERY ONE

04:51 → 04:54

of us.

04:54 → 04:58

It's a reminder that we have to sometimes

04:58 → 05:01

take our focus off of all of the things

05:01 → 05:04

that we can see and hold in our life

05:04 → 05:07

and direct it toward heaven.

05:07 → 05:11

The fact that our goal in this life is

05:11 → 05:14

to REMAIN in Christ.

05:14 → 05:17

I don't think that's a lot of people's

05:17 → 05:21

top ten list of things

05:21 → 05:24

to accomplish as they go through life.

05:24 → 05:27

To remain in Christ, to be nourished on Him,

05:27 → 05:31

to remain in Christ for all eternity was what

05:31 → 05:34

Jesus was trying to get those

05:34 → 05:37

people to understand who had come to Him.

05:37 → 05:41

They wanted Him to be their king.

05:41 → 05:44

He WANTED to be their king, but not an EARTHLY king.

05:44 → 05:47

He wanted to be their

05:47 → 05:50

SPIRITUAL king, their SPIRITUAL ruler ...

05:50 → 05:54

not someone who sat on a fancy throne in Jerusalem

05:54 → 05:57

in a great palace, but

05:57 → 06:00

He wanted to sit on the thrones of their hearts,

06:00 → 06:04

to be the One who was the Lord of their life

06:04 → 06:07

and govern over each and every aspect of their life.

06:07 → 06:10

He said if that's what you WANT me to be,

06:10 → 06:14

the king of your life, you have to REMAIN in Me.

06:14 → 06:17

You have to go off on your own doing the things that

06:17 → 06:20

you want to do and doing the things that this life

06:20 → 06:23

are more important than your eternal life.

06:23 → 06:27

Do we even think of that when we go through our life and

06:27 → 06:30

the sins and opportunities of the sins

06:30 → 06:33

that are put in front of us? If I choose this,

06:33 → 06:37

I choose death. If I choose this,

06:37 → 06:40

I choose remaining in Christ.

06:40 → 06:43

How often we just ignore that and happily go

06:43 → 06:47

down the road of sin and life be damned.

06:47 → 06:50

Because sometimes I think we don't even realize

06:50 → 06:53

that WE'LL be damned.

06:53 → 06:56

We think: Oh, I can come to church on Sunday.

06:56 → 07:00

I can talk about Jesus as my Lord and Savior

07:00 → 07:03

I can go home and do whatever I want.

07:03 → 07:06

I don't have to live that life of faith.

07:06 → 07:10

I can just ignore God,

07:10 → 07:13

I can misuse His name, I can mistreat my parents,

07:13 → 07:16

I can covet other people, I can steal what I want,

07:16 → 07:20

I can hate other people. We can do the whole thing!

07:20 → 07:23

Doesn't really matter ...

07:23 → 07:26

I'll go to church next Sunday and God'll be happy with me.

07:26 → 07:29

But have we REMAINED in Christ?

07:29 → 07:33

Have we NOURISHED and FED ourselves

07:33 → 07:36

on His Word?

07:36 → 07:39

On what It says to us.

07:39 → 07:43

Or do we just hear It and It passes through

07:43 → 07:46

and It has no effect. Think of that with the

07:46 → 07:49

nourishment that we put into our mouths,

07:49 → 07:53

if it just passed through and had no effect.

07:53 → 07:56

We'd be dead. We'd be

07:56 → 07:59

walking skeletons to say the least, with organs

07:59 → 08:02

that didn't function properly.

08:02 → 08:06

God says: Remain in Me.

08:06 → 08:09

Be nourished and fed on Me. Have your faith

08:09 → 08:12

and trust in Me.

08:12 → 08:16

So that we have HEALTHY spiritual lives.

08:16 → 08:19

So that we're ACTIVE in our faith.

08:19 → 08:22

So that the Word that comes in, we hear and we understand

08:22 → 08:26

... and we're not always challenging God and screaming

08:26 → 08:29

at Him and saying: This isn't right or we want outta here or

08:29 → 08:32

we wanna do this. Instead we come to Him

08:32 → 08:35

and say: What do You want from me?

08:35 → 08:39

What do You want from us?

08:39 → 08:42

And that we willingly let Him rule in our hearts.

08:42 → 08:45

Not just today,

08:45 → 08:49

but for all eternity.

08:49 → 08:52

Do we want to spend eternity

08:52 → 08:55

in the presence of God ... What does that mean to us?

08:55 → 08:59

I think that's something we really need to ask ourselves.

08:59 → 09:02

Because it really isn't any different

09:02 → 09:05

than the life that we have in this world.

09:05 → 09:08

Yes, it's gonna be perfect.

09:08 → 09:12

There isn't going to be any sin and woe.

09:12 → 09:15

But it's gonna be time spent with God.

09:15 → 09:18

Praising God.

09:18 → 09:22

Doing the work of God. Being WITH God, worshiping God,

09:22 → 09:25

spending time with God.

09:25 → 09:28

So shouldn't our temporal lives

09:28 → 09:32

reflect that?

09:32 → 09:35

Shouldn't our temporal lives be a foretaste of

09:35 → 09:38

what's to come!

09:38 → 09:41

Or do we let the things of this world distract us and

09:41 → 09:45

detract us so much from

09:45 → 09:48

our eternal glory.

09:48 → 09:51

But then all of a sudden when we get hit

09:51 → 09:55

with the death of someone, we can't cope.

09:55 → 09:58

How could God do this to us?

09:58 → 10:01

How could God bring this into our life?

10:01 → 10:05

He's going to do that to you and to me some day.

10:05 → 10:08

Are we ready for that if it's today?

10:08 → 10:11

What if it's God's great plan

10:11 → 10:14

in the universe that today is the day

10:14 → 10:18

that we all leave this world

10:18 → 10:21

for our eternal glory?

10:21 → 10:24

Are we ready to stand up and rejoice?

10:24 → 10:28

Are we ready to greet our heavenly Father and

10:28 → 10:31

our Savior in the love that

10:31 → 10:34

He has showered upon us. Or are we so fixated on what's

10:34 → 10:38

here that that is too far down the road

10:38 → 10:41

for us to comprehend.

10:41 → 10:44

Those people came

10:44 → 10:47

to Jesus because they wanted to hear Him.

10:47 → 10:51

And when He spoke, they didn't really like

10:51 → 10:54

the message.

10:54 → 10:57

They were missing the fact that HE ... was ...

10:57 → 11:01

the central part of their faith.

11:01 → 11:04

He said: I'm the Living Bread that came down from heaven.

11:04 → 11:07

Not the bread like the manna that came down

11:07 → 11:11

that your forefathers ate and died.

11:11 → 11:14

If you trust and you believe in Me; you WILL live.

11:14 → 11:17

You will live for all of eternity and

11:17 → 11:21

that is the simple Truth of the Gospel of our Lord

11:21 → 11:24

and Savior. God gave us His Son,

11:24 → 11:27

sacrificed Him on the cross of Calvary, so that

11:27 → 11:30

you and I could live forever.

11:30 → 11:34

Live eternally in the presence of our God ... and each

11:34 → 11:37

and every day we remind ourselves of that fact,

11:37 → 11:40

we get centered back on what is important.

11:40 → 11:44

Remaining in Christ.

11:44 → 11:47

And anything that's not in Christ, then leaves our life.

11:47 → 11:50

Anything that is unhealthy for us,

11:50 → 11:54

any poison of sin, we're not gonna take

11:54 → 11:57

into our lives. Anything that is

11:57 → 12:00

going to detract from the

12:00 → 12:03

nourishment of God, should not be a part of our lives.

12:03 → 12:07

And we all know how difficult that is to do

12:07 → 12:10

even with our own food.

12:10 → 12:13

How much more difficult it is for us who sometimes

12:13 → 12:17

who have difficult, who have difficulty understanding the

12:17 → 12:20

importance of the spiritual.

12:20 → 12:23

To rethink how our life goes ...

12:23 → 12:27

to live differently.

12:27 → 12:30

To put into practice the things of Christ

12:30 → 12:33

that we remain in Him and worship Him

12:33 → 12:36

is our goal.

12:36 → 12:40

And the only place we're gonna find strength for that

12:40 → 12:43

is in Jesus Christ Himself.

12:43 → 12:46

We have opened our hearts to Him.

12:46 → 12:50

We have received Him as our Lord and Savior.

12:50 → 12:53

He sits on the throne of our hearts. He is there to

12:53 → 12:56

rule and to guide our life.

12:56 → 13:00

Today we come back to Him and say: You are my Lord.

13:00 → 13:03

You are my God. You are my Savior.

13:03 → 13:06

Today I remain in You.

13:06 → 13:09

And tomorrow morning when I get up, I say

13:09 → 13:13

the same thing. And I pray that the Holy Spirit

13:13 → 13:16

will be with me to keep me in the faith. To keep me

13:16 → 13:19

fighting the good fight, to keep me running the race.

13:19 → 13:23

Because I know that the day that my Lord and Savior

13:23 → 13:26

calls me out of this world,

13:26 → 13:29

that I will be with Him forever in heaven.

13:29 → 13:33

And I look for that day and I long for that day.

13:33 → 13:36

And I hope

13:36 → 13:39

that it will be soon.

13:39 → 13:42

Amen.

13:42 → 13:46

Let us rise.

13:46 → 13:49

Now may the peace of God which goes beyond

13:49 → 13:52

all of our understanding keep your hearts

13:52 → 13:56

and your minds and especially your lives

13:56 → 13:59

in the one true faith unto life everlasting. Amen.
