A long time ago, if a child was born disabled
the child was taken to shrine near a tree.
It was placed under the tree.
The tree was really big.
The child was made to sit there.
If the child could not sit, it was left lying there on a mat.
It was a special blue mat.
It was arranged after the child had been laid down
if he was disabled.
At dawn, if people went by, they would note that the child was not there.
Since the child was not there, it was believed that the child had flown away.
But if the child was born that way by the will of the gods,
the child would be found still alive.
If people went and found the child there, they considered the child to be human,
and believed it was God who decided to make the child disabled.
For example, if someone bears a child that is unable to talk,
that is a bad omen, and the child must be killed.
If the family can manage to do it, they will strangle it.
If they cannot, they will drown the child,
or place the child upside down until it dies.
Traditionally people believed that where such a child lived, it would not rain.
There would be famine and drought and all sorts of trouble.
and if you let that child live, the land would be cursed
That’s how it is according to our culture.
