Transcript for Jack Szostak interview: What was the most difficult step in the research that led to this discovery?

00:02 → 00:09

I think the most difficult step, or process really,

00:09 → 00:17

is that one tends to develop models as a way of guiding your thinking...

00:17 → 00:23

...and it’s hard not to get too attached to a model that you’ve developed.

00:24 → 00:29

Since we were working on recombination, and thinking about reactions of DNA ends,

00:29 → 00:34

we had a lot of models that were based on those reactions.

00:34 → 00:38

We kind of held on to those models, and it wasn’t until the data –

00:38 → 00:44

– the DNA sequences, and the actual picture of what was going on –

00:44 → 00:49

– forced us to say: all those models are wrong, we have to rethink things...

00:49 → 00:55

...and come up with a new model that is consistent with the experiments.

00:55 → 01:00

I think that’s a very common thing in science – and perhaps in life in general –

01:00 → 01:04

that people get too attached to certain ideas.

01:04 → 01:11

You have to be looking at reality and always adjust your ideas...

01:11 → 01:15

... to be consistent with experiments.
