Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the open sharing of information.

00:03 → 00:07

To celebrate CC's work in promoting remix culture and the vitality of the public domain, Wired hosted a Creative Commons benefit concert,

00:07 → 00:11

featuring artists that embody the spirit of "read/write" culture.

00:11 → 00:13

Welcome to Next Music!

00:24 → 00:28

As far as I know it's an organization that's kind of, a viewpoint that

00:28 → 00:33

people should be licensing their material to be openly, to be able to be reworked by the public

00:33 → 00:37

my album, like, samples over 200 songs in 40 minutes.

00:37 → 00:43

In order to try to get the licensing for that, first of all you'd have to be a billionaire to put out this album

00:43 → 00:46

so it seems ridiculous to me that there's a form of music and art

00:46 → 00:51

that is limited in release by your status financially.

00:58 → 01:02

And Creative Commons is all about remixing. It's about sharing culture

01:02 → 01:05

And what you just saw with Girl Talk was one guy

01:05 → 01:10

and 150 samples making magic on stage.

01:14 → 01:17

I'm familiar with Creative Commons, they reached out to me a long time ago and I really like what they do

01:17 → 01:20

because it's in tune with what I'm doing with music as well.

01:20 → 01:23

The only roadblock is that people want to get paid.

01:23 → 01:26

If you're going to release something and make your money off of it, people want to get paid

01:26 → 01:29

because they're a part of it. You know, everybody wants to get their money wherever they can.

01:32 → 01:35

I read the Wired issue on the airplane on the way from Sweden, the one with Beck on the cover

01:35 → 01:38

The way I live and the way I work and the way I make music is way different

01:38 → 01:41

than what Beck was writing about, you know?

01:41 → 01:46

My whole career has been finding alternative ways to reach people.

02:09 → 02:13

It's all fair game as far as I'm concerned.

02:13 → 02:16

The more raw material the better, you know?

02:16 → 02:23

Whether that's recording the subway train or taking a James Brown snare.

02:23 → 02:28

I'm all for it and I really don't see anything too bad in it.

02:28 → 02:31

Just do something with it!

02:40 → 02:50

So Creative Commons gives artists free tools to mark their creativity with the freedom they want it to carry.

02:50 → 02:54

There are 140 million objects marked with this freedom

02:54 → 02:58

and that's the movement that's necessary to change this world

02:58 → 03:05

the world where Girl Talk is a crime

03:13 → 03:15

This should be Creative Commons' slogan:

03:15 → 03:20

get the lawyers the fuck out of the way and let the artists create!

03:20 → 03:24

NextMusic offers fans a chance to see and hear what's next in the world of music
