Well, the origin of Peñon, according to an analysis done by a group of citizens from El Peñon
says that a Spanish citizen residing in the Via of San Bartolo de Neiva
and who responded to the name of Jerónimo Peña
moved to the hills of Mena in front of the Lagoon 'El Rincón' in the year 1751.
In this spot, he build a ranch and nearby had his plot for farming
and he baptized the place with the name El Peñon.
Given that Jerónimo de Peña was a tall man, and he was also very fat,
they called him Peñon.
For reasons of climate and due to the difficulties of going up and down the mountain,
he decided to take the population to a different place that was then known as ´the other group´.
But the river, at one of its high points, washed the population away.
So later, Jerónimo Peña Jr. decided to move the village to where El Peñon is now.
El Peñon is situated in an extensive valley whose bountaries are:
the River Yaque del Sur in the south,
the Lagoon 'El Rincón' in the north,
Palo Alto near Jaquimeyes in the east,
and Cabral to the west.
