Hello. My name is Kathy Konst.and I'm asking |
| 00:08 → 00:11 |
for your vote to be your next New York State Senator. |
| 00:11 → 00:14 |
I'd like to tell you a little about myself and how I helped |
| 00:14 → 00:17 |
create jobs and balance government budgets. Currently, |
| 00:17 → 00:20 |
I'm an Erie County legislator serving in my second |
| 00:20 → 00:23 |
term in office. Before that, I was an elementary school teacher |
| 00:23 → 00:26 |
and an adjunct college professor. For the past ten |
| 00:26 → 00:29 |
years, I have also served as president of our local Chamber of Commerce. |
| 00:29 → 00:32 |
I was elected to the legislature during the now infamous |
| 00:32 → 00:35 |
Erie County budget crisis. Once elected, I proposed |
| 00:35 → 00:38 |
immediate reforms which were passed by the legislature |
| 00:38 → 00:41 |
and then passed overwhelmingly by the public in a referendum |
| 00:41 → 00:44 |
vote. We rigorously cut political pork and patronage |
| 00:44 → 00:47 |
and quickly balanced the county budget. |
| 00:47 → 00:50 |
I was reelected to the legislature in a Republican district, |
| 00:50 → 00:53 |
even though I'm a registered Democrat, and by |
| 00:53 → 00:56 |
an overwhelming margin against an opponent who |
| 00:56 → 00:59 |
spent three times more money. When the Buffalo News endorsed |
| 00:59 → 01:02 |
me that year, they called me quote - one of the bright lights on the legislature. |
| 01:02 → 01:05 |
They called me a maverick, said I have integrity, and they endorsed me |
| 01:05 → 01:08 |
quote - without reservations. While on the legislature |
| 01:08 → 01:11 |
I learned the hard way that ninety percent |
| 01:11 → 01:14 |
of our county budget is forced upon us |
| 01:14 → 01:17 |
by state and federal mandated programs that we are required |
| 01:17 → 01:20 |
to pay for. In other words, the state screws up their |
| 01:20 → 01:23 |
budget and then they simply pass the buck. |
| 01:23 → 01:26 |
You may have read that the New York State budget is |
| 01:26 → 01:29 |
now facing an eight billion dollar deficit. You know what that means - |
| 01:29 → 01:32 |
hold on to your wallets. My opponent Dale Volker |
| 01:32 → 01:35 |
has been in office for 36 years. He was elected |
| 01:35 → 01:38 |
to the legislature before Watergate. Over the past |
| 01:38 → 01:41 |
36 years, we've all witnessed the rapid decline |
| 01:41 → 01:44 |
in our state's economy. Our taxes are sky-rocketing. |
| 01:44 → 01:47 |
Our businesses and farms are closing. Jobs are |
| 01:47 → 01:50 |
being lost. And our children are simply leaving. |
| 01:50 → 01:53 |
While in office for over the past 36 years |
| 01:53 → 01:56 |
Volker has failed to reform Albany. Don't you |
| 01:56 → 01:59 |
think it's time for a change? On November 4th, I |
| 01:59 → 02:02 |
hope you will vote for change. My name is Kathy Konst. |
| 02:02 → 02:05 |
Thank You. |
