Sunday, August 8, 2010 Closed Captioned Sermon

00:03 → 00:06

Let us rise for the reading of

00:06 → 00:09

this morning's Sermon Text recorded for us

00:09 → 00:13

in Psalm 103, where we read

00:13 → 00:16

the first 12 verses:

00:16 → 00:19

PRAISE THE LORD, O MY SOUL;

00:19 → 00:23

ALL MY INMOST BEING, PRAISE HIS HOLY NAME.

00:23 → 00:26

PRAISE THE LORD, O MY SOUL, AND FORGET NOT

00:26 → 00:29

ALL HIS BENEFITS --- HE FORGIVES

00:29 → 00:33

ALL MY SINS AND HEALS ALL MY DISEASES,

00:33 → 00:36

HE REDEEMS MY LIFE FROM THE PIT

00:36 → 00:39

AND CROWNS ME WITH LOVE AND COMPASSION,

00:39 → 00:42

WHO SATISFIES MY DESIRES WITH GOOD THINGS

00:42 → 00:46

SO THAT MY YOUTH IS RENEWED LIKE EAGLE'S.

00:46 → 00:49

THE LORD WORKS RIGHTEOUSNESS

00:49 → 00:52

AND JUSTICE FOR ALL THE OPPRESSED.

00:52 → 00:56

HE MADE KNOWN HIS WAYS TO MOSES,

00:56 → 00:59

HIS DEEDS TO THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL: THE LORD IS

00:59 → 01:02

COMPASSIONATE AND GRACIOUS, SLOW TO ANGER,

01:02 → 01:06

AND ABOUNDING IN LOVE. HE WILL NOT ALWAYS ACCUSE,

01:06 → 01:09

NOR WILL HE HARBOR HIS ANGER

01:09 → 01:12

FOREVER; HE DOES NOT TREAT US AS OUR SINS DESERVE

01:12 → 01:15

OR REPAY US ACCORDING TO OUR INIQUITIES.

01:15 → 01:19

FOR AS HIGH AS THE HEAVENS ARE ABOVE THE EARTH,

01:19 → 01:22

SO GREAT IS HIS LOVE FOR THOSE

01:22 → 01:25

WHO FEAR HIM; AS FAR AS THE EAST IS FROM

01:25 → 01:29

THE WEST, SO FAR HAS HE REMOVED

01:29 → 01:32

OUR TRANSGRESSIONS FROM US.

01:32 → 01:35

This is the Word of our Lord. Let us pray:

01:35 → 01:39

This is the day that the LORD has made.

01:39 → 01:42

Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Amen. [Sermon text

01:42 → 01:45

taken from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION 1978

01:45 → 01:48

used by permission of

01:48 → 01:52

Zondervan Bible Publishers.

01:52 → 01:55

Dear Followers

01:55 → 01:58

of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ:

01:58 → 02:02

I'm sure you're all familiar

02:02 → 02:05

with the television game show, "Family Feud" ...

02:05 → 02:08

where at the end

02:08 → 02:12

of the show, they bring out two people ...

02:12 → 02:15

ask them five questions that

02:15 → 02:18

they need to respond to

02:18 → 02:21

in order to get: 200 points!

02:21 → 02:25

So, was watching one of these

02:25 → 02:28

shows and an interesting question

02:28 → 02:31

caught my ear:

02:31 → 02:35

In the last month,

02:35 → 02:38

how many of the Commandments

02:38 → 02:41

have you broken?

02:41 → 02:45

And, without skipping a beat,

02:45 → 02:48

the older gentleman from Minnesota

02:48 → 02:51

shouted out: Zero!

02:51 → 02:54

[Pause]

02:54 → 02:58

And he had a lotta points!

02:58 → 03:01

But that wasn't the Number 1 answer.

03:01 → 03:04

It's kind of interesting because his daughter said:

03:04 → 03:08

Nine! [Laughter]

03:08 → 03:11

And he wanted to know which one she kept.

03:11 → 03:14

But the top answer was:

03:14 → 03:18

One!

03:18 → 03:21

What an interesting perception

03:21 → 03:24

people have

03:24 → 03:27

of God's Commandments.

03:27 → 03:31

Interesting way that people look at God's Law

03:31 → 03:34

and their living of that Law.

03:34 → 03:37

And maybe it's just stubborn

03:37 → 03:41

human nature, to be able to say

03:41 → 03:44

that when I look at my behavior,

03:44 → 03:47

in the past month, I

03:47 → 03:51

have to admit that I have trampled

03:51 → 03:54

all over those commands of God!

03:54 → 03:57

I haven't put Him first.

03:57 → 04:00

I've broken the First Commandment!

04:00 → 04:04

I can go through that entire list and see that

04:04 → 04:07

I have not used God's name in the way that He wants me to.

04:07 → 04:10

I haven't worshiped Him.

04:10 → 04:14

I haven't spent time with Him in His Word. I have

04:14 → 04:17

NOT treated those people around me in the way

04:17 → 04:20

that God would want me to treat them ...

04:20 → 04:24

with love and dignity and respect.

04:24 → 04:27

I have no respect for our government. I don't like

04:27 → 04:30

people. There are people that I hate. I have

04:30 → 04:33

lusted after objects of people

04:33 → 04:37

in this world and made them just

04:37 → 04:40

sexual beings. I have wanted

04:40 → 04:43

what is not mine. I have gossiped and slandered

04:43 → 04:47

the good name of other people and I have

04:47 → 04:50

looked at what other people have and I

04:50 → 04:53

want it. Those are my thoughts.

04:53 → 04:57

Those are my actions

04:57 → 05:00

in connection with God's Commandments.

05:00 → 05:03

I cannot keep that Law.

05:03 → 05:06

And I repeatedly and daily,

05:06 → 05:10

break each and

05:10 → 05:13

every one of those Commandments.

05:13 → 05:16

And God has revealed to me

05:16 → 05:20

that if I cannot keep that Law

05:20 → 05:23

perfectly in every aspect,

05:23 → 05:26

then I deserve eternal

05:26 → 05:30

punishment and condemnation.

05:30 → 05:33

That IS

05:33 → 05:36

what I deserve

05:36 → 05:40

because of my sins.

05:40 → 05:43

Because of the things that I leave undone that God wants me

05:43 → 05:46

to do that I think I'll have time for maybe tomorrow.

05:46 → 05:49

I deserve to be punished for

05:49 → 05:53

all eternity because I willingly look at what God

05:53 → 05:56

wants and do exactly

05:56 → 05:59

what He doesn't.

05:59 → 06:03

And sometimes I don't even care ...

06:03 → 06:06

because ... I want to do it!

06:06 → 06:09

That is what condemns us to the fires of hell.

06:09 → 06:13

But God has also revealed

06:13 → 06:16

to us in His Word, what He is like.

06:16 → 06:19

The LORD.

06:19 → 06:22

The LORD of the Covenant. The LORD God ...

06:22 → 06:26

the Savior of all people.

06:26 → 06:29

He is kind ... and compassionate;

06:29 → 06:32

slow to anger

06:32 → 06:36

and abounding in love.

06:36 → 06:39

That's the idea that people have of God

06:39 → 06:42

outside of Scripture ... who think He is some

06:42 → 06:46

doting parent who loves absolutely

06:46 → 06:49

everything that their child does, and if there's anything

06:49 → 06:52

that they don't like, it was someone else's fault.

06:52 → 06:55

It was their friend. It was their

06:55 → 06:59

teacher. It was the law. They can point to everything

06:59 → 07:02

but their own son, but that's not what God is like.

07:02 → 07:05

He doesn't sit in heaven and look at what we do and

07:05 → 07:09

say: Okay, I'll just ignore that.

07:09 → 07:12

He loves us more than that ...

07:12 → 07:15

because He knows

07:15 → 07:19

what we are to the very core.

07:19 → 07:22

Our very being ... is sinful.

07:22 → 07:25

In His love

07:25 → 07:28

and His compassion, He sent us

07:28 → 07:32

a Savior.

07:32 → 07:35

He sent us His Son ...

07:35 → 07:38

to save us from that pit.

07:38 → 07:42

That pit of despair.

07:42 → 07:45

That pit like those pits of tar

07:45 → 07:48

over on LaBrae.

07:48 → 07:52

Where the more you struggle and the more you try to pull,

07:52 → 07:55

the more tired you become and the less you want to fight and

07:55 → 07:58

the more it sucks you down, and sucks you in until you are

07:58 → 08:01

completely covered and destroyed.

08:01 → 08:05

That's the pit that we are in sin.

08:05 → 08:08

And we cannot get out of it on our own.

08:08 → 08:11

But God sent His Son ... came down out of heaven

08:11 → 08:15

in love and compassion

08:15 → 08:18

for us, and saved us.

08:18 → 08:21

Pulled us out

08:21 → 08:25

of that pit and washed off the blackness

08:25 → 08:28

the darkness of that sin ... that stain

08:28 → 08:31

and He made us stand as the children of God.

08:31 → 08:34

Made us stand in the holiness of Christ.

08:34 → 08:38

Made us stand clean and pure

08:38 → 08:41

before our God who doesn't ignore our sins ...

08:41 → 08:44

He forgives them!

08:44 → 08:48

He removes them from us. As far as the East

08:48 → 08:51

is from the West, He removes

08:51 → 08:54

them from us. And we stand as His holy

08:54 → 08:58

and redeemed children.

08:58 → 09:01

And the Psalmist this morning reminds us to praise God

09:01 → 09:04

that our sins are forgiven.

09:04 → 09:07

To call on that Name of God that we know

09:07 → 09:11

is the only name that saves people from

09:11 → 09:14

their sin: Jesus Christ!

09:14 → 09:17

To come to Him in praise. To

09:17 → 09:21

lift that Name high above each and every

09:21 → 09:24

other name on the face of the earth.

09:24 → 09:27

Because there is the forgiveness of our sins.

09:27 → 09:31

There is our joy. There is our gladness.

09:31 → 09:34

There's the comfort that we have received from God.

09:34 → 09:37

That OUR sins are forgiven.

09:37 → 09:40

And that we come to Him with thanks

09:40 → 09:44

for what He's done. We come to Him

09:44 → 09:47

acknowledging who and what we are

09:47 → 09:50

and not hiding from God everything that

09:50 → 09:54

He sees anyway. And plead

09:54 → 09:57

His mercy. And receive that forgiveness.

09:57 → 10:00

And therein is created the joy

10:00 → 10:04

in our life. To be able to go

10:04 → 10:07

to God in prayer for everything that we need

10:07 → 10:10

because He has forgiven us,

10:10 → 10:13

and He loves us.

10:13 → 10:17

How great is the compassion and love

10:17 → 10:20

that the Father has lavished on us!

10:20 → 10:23

That He knows what we need!

10:23 → 10:27

That He gave us His Son! That in this life

10:27 → 10:30

He continues to give us

10:30 → 10:33

good things; that He continues to give us

10:33 → 10:37

blessings that we hold in our hands and we

10:37 → 10:40

see with our eyes that are all around us.

10:40 → 10:43

We don't have a god who's up in heaven playing

10:43 → 10:46

games with our lives; wanting to see

10:46 → 10:50

how he can mess with our heads. How much turmoil

10:50 → 10:53

he can throw in our way. OUR GOD

10:53 → 10:56

loves us; and

10:56 → 11:00

He blesses us! And we open

11:00 → 11:03

our hands and we receive those blessings ...

11:03 → 11:06

willingly! Each and every day.

11:06 → 11:10

And the Psalmist reminds us to come and turn back to God in

11:10 → 11:13

thanks for what He has given us.

11:13 → 11:16

From the littlest of blessings

11:16 → 11:20

and the greatest of gifts,

11:20 → 11:23

and God gives to each of us

11:23 → 11:26

exactly what we need. The blessings he gives to me

11:26 → 11:29

are the blessings that are different from the ones

11:29 → 11:33

He gives to each and every one of you on every day.

11:33 → 11:36

But as God's children,

11:36 → 11:39

you know what they are.

11:39 → 11:43

When you look for them, you will see them.

11:43 → 11:46

God is abundant. He is in your life

11:46 → 11:49

every moment, with His care,

11:49 → 11:53

and His concern. He hears the prayers

11:53 → 11:56

that come through Jesus' name

11:56 → 11:59

that are carried on our faith

11:59 → 12:02

to His Holy heavenly throne!

12:02 → 12:06

And He answers them in love

12:06 → 12:09

for our good.

12:09 → 12:12

And in return, we raise the praise

12:12 → 12:16

of His name. We give glory

12:16 → 12:19

to God for who He is, for what He's done

12:19 → 12:22

and for what He continues to do for us

12:22 → 12:26

today. And, in faith, we know He will

12:26 → 12:29

do for us tomorrow and till the ends time

12:29 → 12:32

when He ends this world and takes us to be

12:32 → 12:35

with Him in heaven. And we will continue there

12:35 → 12:39

to praise His Holy Name

12:39 → 12:42

with all of the joy that is ours.

12:42 → 12:45

For the blessings of this world, pale

12:45 → 12:49

in comparison to what

12:49 → 12:52

awaits us in that heavenly Kingdom.

12:52 → 12:55

Where God's love wipes away our tears.

12:55 → 12:59

Where God's love surrounds us

12:59 → 13:02

at all times. Where there is no evil.

13:02 → 13:05

Where there is no weeping and sorrow, and mourning ...

13:05 → 13:08

... there IS the Glory of God.

13:08 → 13:12

The joy of God.

13:12 → 13:15

And we wait and long for that day

13:15 → 13:18

as we go through this life looking forward

13:18 → 13:22

to that time. Praising God that He has made

13:22 → 13:25

that secure for us. That we know the answers

13:25 → 13:28

to the most important

13:28 → 13:32

questions in the world.

13:32 → 13:35

Not just to win some points

13:35 → 13:38

and gain some money on a talk show.

13:38 → 13:41

But the answers to the question

13:41 → 13:45

that God is going to ask us, when we

13:45 → 13:48

face Him in death.

13:48 → 13:51

We confess that we ARE

13:51 → 13:55

sinful human beings. We PLEAD

13:55 → 13:58

the blood of Jesus Christ

13:58 → 14:01

and HIS salvation won for US.

14:01 → 14:05

And on that basis, we know that heaven

14:05 → 14:08

is ours. That heaven will be

14:08 → 14:11

ours for all eternity.

14:11 → 14:14

And there we will live in splendor

14:14 → 14:18

beyond our imagination.

14:18 → 14:21

Those are the answers that you have

14:21 → 14:24

because God has revealed who He is.

14:24 → 14:28

He has given you

14:28 → 14:31

what He is in the pages of Scripture.

14:31 → 14:34

He has told you His Name.

14:34 → 14:38

Praise the Name

14:38 → 14:41

of the LORD.

14:41 → 14:44

Amen.

14:44 → 14:47

Let us rise. Now may the

14:47 → 14:51

peace of God which goes beyond all of our understanding,

14:51 → 14:54

keep your hearts and your minds and especially your

14:54 → 14:57

lives, in the one true faith unto life everlasting. Amen.
