Text from the Holy Bible: NIV used by permission of

00:03 → 00:06

Zondervan Bible Publishers.

00:06 → 00:09

Let us rise for the reading of this morning's sermon text

00:09 → 00:13

recorded for us in Mark's Gospel where we read from

00:13 → 00:16

Chapter 6, beginning with verse 30:

00:16 → 00:19

The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all

00:19 → 00:23

all they had done and taught.

00:23 → 00:26

Then, because so many people were coming and going

00:26 → 00:29

that they did not even have a chance to eat,

00:29 → 00:33

he said to them, "COME WITH ME BY YOURSELVES

00:33 → 00:36

TO A QUIET PLACE AND GET SOME REST."

00:36 → 00:39

So they went away by themselves in a boat

00:39 → 00:42

to a solitary place. But many who saw them leaving

00:42 → 00:46

recognized them and ran on foot from

00:46 → 00:49

all the towns and got there ahead of them.

00:49 → 00:52

When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd,

00:52 → 00:56

he had compassion on them,

00:56 → 00:59

because they were like sheep without a shepherd.

00:59 → 01:02

So he began teaching them many things.

01:02 → 01:06

This is the Word of our Lord. Let us pray:

01:06 → 01:09

This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice

01:09 → 01:12

and be glad in it.

01:12 → 01:15

Amen. ....

01:15 → 01:19

The congregation is seated.

01:19 → 01:22

(Silent moment.)

01:22 → 01:25

Dear Followers

01:25 → 01:29

of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

01:29 → 01:32

What's a milestone

01:32 → 01:35

for you that marks

01:35 → 01:39

the end of summer?

01:39 → 01:42

We turned over the calendar page

01:42 → 01:45

once again and all of a sudden

01:45 → 01:48

we're in the month of August. And now

01:48 → 01:52

we start thinking ... that school's gonna start again,

01:52 → 01:55

and maybe you're thinking your summer is really over.

01:55 → 01:58

I think sometimes, in my life,

01:58 → 02:02

I think that once we celebrate the 4th of July,

02:02 → 02:05

my summer is done.

02:05 → 02:08

And I don't know why that is because I used to LOVE summer.

02:08 → 02:12

I used to LOVE to look forward to that time

02:12 → 02:15

when there was less work to do.

02:15 → 02:18

There was enjoyment. We can go to the beach. We can go to

02:18 → 02:21

the lake. As children we would go fishing.

02:21 → 02:25

We would just hang out and have nothing to do

02:25 → 02:28

but lay on the grass and drink some lemonade

02:28 → 02:31

and maybe get in a water fight.

02:31 → 02:35

But now summer goes by

02:35 → 02:38

really fast.

02:38 → 02:41

And it doesn't seem like it's a time of relaxation ...

02:41 → 02:45

and peace.

02:45 → 02:48

But if I truly sit down and

02:48 → 02:51

analyze what it is,

02:51 → 02:54

summer hasn't changed. Summer is still

02:54 → 02:58

that same amount of days it's always been.

02:58 → 03:01

But I just don't take the time.

03:01 → 03:04

I ... don't ... allow myself

03:04 → 03:08

the ... time ... to relax

03:08 → 03:11

and lay in the grass and have a glass of lemonade.

03:11 → 03:14

Or just go to the beach

03:14 → 03:18

and sit there.

03:18 → 03:21

How important THAT time

03:21 → 03:24

of relaxation is ...

03:24 → 03:27

of rest and renewal.

03:27 → 03:31

And our Lord knows that for us as well.

03:31 → 03:34

It was the example of creation

03:34 → 03:37

where God took 24-hour days

03:37 → 03:41

six of them and created

03:41 → 03:44

the entire universe and all that exists.

03:44 → 03:47

And on the seventh day ...

03:47 → 03:51

... He rested.

03:51 → 03:54

He took a Sabbath. And

03:54 → 03:57

He wanted us to know and to learn that THAT Sabbath rest

03:57 → 04:00

is important. It's a time

04:00 → 04:04

for us to NOT work.

04:04 → 04:07

To refocus ourselves, especially

04:07 → 04:10

to refocus ourselves on God

04:10 → 04:14

and on His Word. To come together as the family

04:14 → 04:17

of believers and spend time at His feet.

04:17 → 04:20

Relaxed.

04:20 → 04:24

Refreshed. Not worrying about what's gonna happen

04:24 → 04:27

this afternoon or running through lists in our head

04:27 → 04:30

of everything that's coming up this week. That's

04:30 → 04:33

being with the Lord.

04:33 → 04:37

He gave that same reminder to His disciples.

04:37 → 04:40

His own disciples that He had sent out

04:40 → 04:43

to go and proclaim the fact that the Kingdom of God

04:43 → 04:47

is near. And Mark's Gospel tells us

04:47 → 04:50

that when they came back, they wanted to talk with Jesus

04:50 → 04:53

about all that they had done, about all that they had

04:53 → 04:57

experienced. Those wonderful things

04:57 → 05:00

that had occurred to them as they shared the message

05:00 → 05:03

of the Messiah with God's people.

05:03 → 05:06

They came back to Jesus

05:06 → 05:10

accompanied by people

05:10 → 05:13

that they had encountered

05:13 → 05:16

and talked to ... who wanted to see Jesus as well.

05:16 → 05:20

They mobbed Jesus and His disciples.

05:20 → 05:23

There were so many of them and so much going on

05:23 → 05:26

that the disciples couldn't even eat.

05:26 → 05:30

And Jesus said to them: It's important for you to rest.

05:30 → 05:33

Let's go away. You and I

05:33 → 05:36

are going to go away

05:36 → 05:40

so we can discuss what happened.

05:40 → 05:43

I want to hear your war stories of proclaiming

05:43 → 05:46

the Gospel. I want to hear the JOY of your life

05:46 → 05:49

in doing what I asked you to do.

05:49 → 05:53

That's what Jesus wanted for His disciples and

05:53 → 05:56

He wants that for us as well.

05:56 → 05:59

He wants us as His brothers and sisters to

05:59 → 06:03

spend family time

06:03 → 06:06

together ... around the Word.

06:06 → 06:09

Coming to our Heavenly Father with all of our joy

06:09 → 06:13

with the good things that are going on in our lives

06:13 → 06:16

thanking and praising Him for what He's done ...

06:16 → 06:19

what He has accomplished through us.

06:19 → 06:22

Spending time together with Jesus

06:22 → 06:26

confessing the fact that we ARE sinful

06:26 → 06:29

that we realize that we're NOT perfect but we go to Him

06:29 → 06:32

for the comfort and the reassurance that

06:32 → 06:36

He has forgiven our sins. That we

06:36 → 06:39

are still His own and that He

06:39 → 06:42

STILL loves us.

06:42 → 06:46

And gives us encouragement in His Word, with the

06:46 → 06:49

reminders of His blessings,

06:49 → 06:52

with the joy we have in discovering, once again,

06:52 → 06:55

the treasures that He has recorded for us.

06:55 → 06:59

That time together with Him is a time

06:59 → 07:02

to rest with Him.

07:02 → 07:05

And to be family with Him.

07:05 → 07:09

You and I just have to admit

07:09 → 07:12

that we often DON'T take the time to do that.

07:12 → 07:15

We don't make that effort

07:15 → 07:19

because it really isn't that important to us.

07:19 → 07:22

It isn't that important to us to spend time

07:22 → 07:25

with our fellow believers in Christ.

07:25 → 07:28

We always have our own agendas and our own things to do.

07:28 → 07:32

But today we're reminded how important that is

07:32 → 07:35

to support each other. To be

07:35 → 07:38

with each other. To strengthen each other ...

07:38 → 07:42

to laugh together, to cry together,

07:42 → 07:45

to grieve together, to work together, TO BE

07:45 → 07:48

TOGETHER WITH GOD.

07:48 → 07:52

Because He will support us and

07:52 → 07:55

He will strengthen us. He will give us the

07:55 → 07:58

compassion that He has

07:58 → 08:01

for the world.

08:01 → 08:05

Because even knowing the importance

08:05 → 08:08

of rest, when Jesus and His disciples pulled up

08:08 → 08:11

in that boat and all of those people had run ahead of Him,

08:11 → 08:15

had gotten there before Him,

08:15 → 08:18

because they WANTED TO BE WITH HIM,

08:18 → 08:21

They needed to HEAR what He had to say;

08:21 → 08:25

they wanted to LEARN from Him.

08:25 → 08:28

They were there to BE WITH HIM.

08:28 → 08:31

He looked at them and

08:31 → 08:34

He had compassion.

08:34 → 08:38

He had compassion on them

08:38 → 08:41

because they were like sheep without a shepherd.

08:41 → 08:44

They were running around aimlessly. No one was there

08:44 → 08:48

protecting them. No one was there feeding them.

08:48 → 08:51

No one was there caring for them and He ...

08:51 → 08:54

began to teach them.

08:54 → 08:58

The compassion that He had for them,

08:58 → 09:01

oozed out to them ...

09:01 → 09:04

with Himself, with His Word ...

09:04 → 09:07

to tend the flock ... to bring to them the knowledge

09:07 → 09:11

of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

09:11 → 09:14

And we realize how important

09:14 → 09:17

that is for us as well.

09:17 → 09:21

How important it is to look at the world with compassion,

09:21 → 09:24

with the heart of Christ.

09:24 → 09:27

To bring to the world what

09:27 → 09:31

they NEED MOST, which IS

09:31 → 09:34

the love and the support and

09:34 → 09:37

the forgiveness of God.

09:37 → 09:40

If Jesus were here today and He looked out on the world,

09:40 → 09:44

how would He describe it?

09:44 → 09:47

A world that is truly searching for answers.

09:47 → 09:50

A world that's become rather selfish

09:50 → 09:54

and focused only on what THEIR needs are ... thinking

09:54 → 09:57

THEY know what is best, they can decide

09:57 → 10:00

the truth, they can decide for themselves everything that

10:00 → 10:04

they need.

10:04 → 10:07

Yet they can't save themselves.

10:07 → 10:10

They can't stop the condemnation

10:10 → 10:13

of sin and they're all going to die

10:13 → 10:17

some day.

10:17 → 10:20

We have ... the answers

10:20 → 10:23

that God has given us in His Word.

10:23 → 10:27

The true answers ... like for instance:

10:27 → 10:30

Jesus died for the forgiveness of sins.

10:30 → 10:33

We know that death is the punishment of sin

10:33 → 10:37

but for those who believe that Jesus Christ on the

10:37 → 10:40

cross of Calvary died to remove that punishment,

10:40 → 10:43

it is the passing to eternal life.

10:43 → 10:46

To the glories of heaven. To the joys of BEING

10:46 → 10:50

with our Creator and our Heavenly Father forever.

10:50 → 10:53

And that's the message that we bring to others

10:53 → 10:56

in compassion.

10:56 → 11:00

We're out there to proclaim the Truth of God.

11:00 → 11:03

The Pure Word of God,

11:03 → 11:06

because there is the true understanding of compassion

11:06 → 11:10

and what love is.

11:10 → 11:13

Not that we love God ...

11:13 → 11:16

but that He loved us.

11:16 → 11:20

He sent Jesus Christ into this world to

11:20 → 11:23

restore the relationship that was broken by sin ...

11:23 → 11:26

to be the Righteousness that God demanded.

11:26 → 11:29

That no one could produce themselves.

11:29 → 11:33

We HAVE

11:33 → 11:36

THAT wonderful message and it IS

11:36 → 11:39

a message of love

11:39 → 11:43

and compassion.

11:43 → 11:46

And as Jesus taught us: That should be proclaimed.

11:46 → 11:49

We proclaim it out of love for those people

11:49 → 11:53

who are lost, who need

11:53 → 11:56

direction and we do it in a loving manner,

11:56 → 11:59

in a gentle manner sometimes putting the needs of

11:59 → 12:02

those other people above our own needs

12:02 → 12:06

because we understand how important that is.

12:06 → 12:09

Jesus IS

12:09 → 12:12

the Good Shepherd who laid down His life

12:12 → 12:16

for the lost. He has called us His own.

12:16 → 12:19

He has gathered us into His flock

12:19 → 12:22

He tends for us. He cares for us.

12:22 → 12:26

May we find rest in Him.

12:26 → 12:29

May we find support and strength in His Word

12:29 → 12:32

and encouragement. May we understand

12:32 → 12:35

the compassion that He had for sinful

12:35 → 12:39

humanity ... so that we, too,

12:39 → 12:42

can be compassionate; so that we, too, can be loving

12:42 → 12:45

and SHARE the joy that we have.

12:45 → 12:49

We realize

12:49 → 12:52

that the days are short and there's a lot of work to do.

12:52 → 12:55

A lot of work to get done. We all have

12:55 → 12:59

lists of things that we want to accomplish today,

12:59 → 13:02

even for this week.

13:02 → 13:05

But the most important thing that we can never neglect

13:05 → 13:08

is that time of rest.

13:08 → 13:12

That time of rest

13:12 → 13:15

at the feet of our Lord and Savior.

13:15 → 13:18

Hearing His Word. Listening to Him.

13:18 → 13:22

Sharing with Him.

13:22 → 13:25

He tends us as the Good Shepherd.

13:25 → 13:28

May we find rest

13:28 → 13:32

for our souls. Amen.

13:32 → 13:35

Let us rise.

13:35 → 13:38

Now may the peace of God which goes beyond

13:38 → 13:41

all of our understanding, keep your hearts and your

13:41 → 13:45

minds and especially your lives in the one true faith

13:45 → 13:48

unto life everlasting. Amen.
