Transcript for Animation: Human Rights

Time Content
00:04 → 00:06

All people have human rights.

00:07 → 00:09

We need to know about them because

00:09 → 00:11

they give us the authority to speak for ourselves.

00:11 → 00:13

States are obliged to uphold our human rights.

00:14 → 00:16

Human Rights began when lots of people

00:16 → 00:18

from all over the world got together and discussed

00:18 → 00:21

what fundamental rights all people should have.

00:22 → 00:24

These Human Rights are written down in International Laws

00:25 → 00:27

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

00:27 → 00:30

The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights

00:30 → 00:35

the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

00:35 → 00:38

All three of these make up the International Bill of Rights

00:39 → 00:42

Our rights are threatened by climate change

00:43 → 00:46

Climate Change is caused by the earth warming up

00:46 → 00:50

This is caused by things such as pollution and deforestation

00:50 → 00:53

It leads to melting ice, floods and drought

00:54 → 00:56

Let me tell you about a community

00:56 → 00:58

are suffering the affects of climate change.

00:58 → 01:00

In the last few years their weather

01:00 → 01:02

has changed a lot. It is irregular!

01:02 → 01:05

Sometimes it rains so much it floods.

01:06 → 01:09

Other days it never rains which leads to drought

01:09 → 01:11

It destroys food crops

01:11 → 01:13

It destroys water supplies

01:13 → 01:14

It puts lives in danger

01:15 → 01:20

But, they have a human right to have water and food

01:22 → 01:24

This right is found in international law

01:24 → 01:29

go to www2.ohchr.org to find the relevant ones.

01:30 → 01:32

They can use these rights to make a change

01:33 → 01:35

They can make a film on their issues

01:35 → 01:38

and show it to decision makers

01:38 → 01:41

They can write a letter to their state

01:41 → 01:43

officials to explain their case

01:43 → 01:45

They can speak out! Represent their people

01:45 → 01:48

attending international forums.

01:48 → 01:50

And hopefully through these methods their

01:50 → 01:54

voices will be heard and their rights upheld.

01:54 → 01:56

We can use this system over and

01:56 → 01:58

over again for all our rights

01:59 → 02:01

to Culture and language

02:01 → 02:04

Including our Right to Health and to Land

02:04 → 02:06

For more information on how to make

02:06 → 02:08

your rights work for you go to
