00:00 → 00:03

Pastor Dave, Zion Ev. Lutheran Torrance, CA 1-10-2010

00:03 → 00:06

Let us rise.

00:06 → 00:09

(Audio difficulty) Text 1 Samuel 16:1-13

00:09 → 00:13

THE LORD SAID TO SAMUEL, "HOW LONG WILL YOU MOURN

00:13 → 00:16

FOR SAUL, SINCE I HAVE

00:16 → 00:19

REJECTED HIM AS KING OVER ISRAEL?

00:19 → 00:23

FILL YOUR HORN WITH OIL AND

00:23 → 00:26

BE ON YOUR WAY;

00:26 → 00:29

I AM SENDING YOU TO JESSE OF BETHLEHEM.

00:29 → 00:33

I HAVE CHOSEN ONE OF HIS

00:33 → 00:36

SONS TO BE KING."

00:36 → 00:39

BUT SAMUEL SAID, "HOW CAN I GO?

00:39 → 00:42

SAUL WILL HEAR ABOUT IT AND KILL ME."

00:42 → 00:46

THE LORD SAID, "TAKE A HEIFER WITH YOU AND SAY,

00:46 → 00:49

'I HAVE COME TO SACRIFICE TO THE LORD.' INVITE JESSE TO

00:49 → 00:52

THE SACRIFICE, AND I WILL SHOW YOU WHAT TO DO.

00:52 → 00:56

YOU ARE TO ANOINT FOR ME THE ONE I INDICATE."

00:56 → 00:59

SAMUEL DID WHAT THE LORD SAID.

00:59 → 01:02

WHEN HE ARRIVED AT BETHLEHEM, THE ELDERS OF THE TOWN

01:02 → 01:06

TREMBLED WHEN THEY MET HIM. THEY ASKED,

01:06 → 01:09

"DO YOU COME IN PEACE?" SAMUEL REPLIED,

01:09 → 01:12

"YES, IN PEACE; I HAVE COME TO SACRIFICE

01:12 → 01:15

TO THE LORD. CONSECRATE YOURSELVES

01:15 → 01:19

AND COME TO THE SACRIFICE WITH ME."

01:19 → 01:22

THEN HE CONSECRATED JESSE AND HIS SONS AND INVITED THEM

01:22 → 01:25

TO THE SACRIFICE. WHEN THEY ARRIVED,

01:25 → 01:29

SAMUEL SAW ELIAB AND THOUGHT, SURELY THE LORD'S ANOINTED

01:29 → 01:32

STANDS HERE BEFORE THE LORD."

01:32 → 01:35

BUT THE LORD SAID TO SAMUEL, "DO NOT CONSIDER HIS

01:35 → 01:39

APPEARANCE OR HIS HEIGHT, FOR I HAVE REJECTED HIM.

01:39 → 01:42

THE LORD DOES NOT LOOK AT THE THINGS MAN LOOKS AT.

01:42 → 01:45

MAN LOOKS AT THE OUTWARD APPEARANCE, BUT THE LORD

01:45 → 01:48

LOOKS AT THE HEART." THEN JESSE CALLED ABINADAB AND

01:48 → 01:52

HAD HIM PASS IN FRONT OF

01:52 → 01:55

SAMUEL. BUT SAMUEL SAID, THE LORD HAS NOT CHOSEN

01:55 → 01:58

THIS ONE EITHER." JESSE THEN HAD SHAMMAH PASS BY,

01:58 → 02:02

BUT SAMUEL SAID, "NOR HAS THE LORD CHOSEN THIS ONE."

02:02 → 02:05

JESSE HAD SEVEN OF HIS SONS

02:05 → 02:08

PASS BEFORE SAMUEL, BUT SAMUEL SAID TO HIM,

02:08 → 02:12

"THE LORD HAS NOT CHOSEN THESE."

02:12 → 02:15

SO HE ASKED JESSE, "ARE THESE ALL THE SONS

02:15 → 02:18

YOU HAVE?" "THERE IS STILL THE YOUNGEST,"

02:18 → 02:21

JESSE ANSWERED, "BUT HE IS TENDING THE SHEEP."

02:21 → 02:25

SAMUEL SAID, "SEND FOR HIM; WE WILL NOT SIT DOWN

02:25 → 02:28

UNTIL HE ARRIVES." SO HE SENT AND HAD HIM BROUGHT IN.

02:28 → 02:31

HE WAS RUDDY, WITH A FINE APPEARANCE AND

02:31 → 02:35

HANDSOME FEATURES. THEN THE LORD SAID,

02:35 → 02:38

"RISE AND ANOINT HIM; HE IS THE ONE."

02:38 → 02:41

SO SAMUEL TOOK THE HORN OF OIL AND ANOINTED HIM

02:41 → 02:45

IN THE PRESENCE OF HIS BROTHERS, AND FROM THAT DAY ON

02:45 → 02:48

THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD CAME UPON DAVID IN POWER.

02:48 → 02:51

SAMUEL THEN WENT TO RAMAH.

02:51 → 02:54

This is the Word of our Lord. Let us pray:

02:54 → 02:58

Glorious and gracious God, may the words of

02:58 → 03:01

my mouth and the meditation of each of our hearts,

03:01 → 03:04

be acceptable in Your sight, our only source of

03:04 → 03:08

hope and comfort.

03:08 → 03:11

Amen.

03:11 → 03:14

(Text from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION.)

03:14 → 03:18

Pastor Dave motions

03:18 → 03:21

for the congregation to be seated.

03:21 → 03:24

Dear Followers of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

03:24 → 03:27

God's people, have for all of their history

03:27 → 03:31

wanted to be like

03:31 → 03:34

the people that were around them.

03:34 → 03:37

As the people of God, He had brought them together and

03:37 → 03:41

separated them. Made them

03:41 → 03:44

separate and distinct and unique. They were

03:44 → 03:47

His children. But when those people looked around at the

03:47 → 03:51

other nations, and the other peoples around them, they were

03:51 → 03:54

envious of something.

03:54 → 03:57

They wanted someone who could lead them. Someone

03:57 → 04:00

they could see. Not a god who was

04:00 → 04:04

detached from them. They wanted a king.

04:04 → 04:07

They wanted to be like all of the other nations

04:07 → 04:10

on the earth. And they went to God

04:10 → 04:14

and they pleaded with Him: Give us a king!

04:14 → 04:17

We want a king.

04:17 → 04:20

So the LORD said: All right. I will give you what you want.

04:20 → 04:24

And He selected for them: Saul ...

04:24 → 04:27

to be their king.

04:27 → 04:30

And then they realized,

04:30 → 04:33

that they were going to be like every other nation

04:33 → 04:37

on the face of the earth.

04:37 → 04:40

Immediately they were happy. They were thrilled.

04:40 → 04:43

They had a leader. They had a king. They rejoiced.

04:43 → 04:47

They put all of their hope and strength in Him.

04:47 → 04:50

And then Saul didn't do what they wanted.

04:50 → 04:53

Then Saul was not being the king that they wanted

04:53 → 04:57

him to be. And guess what? They became very disgruntled.

04:57 → 05:00

They were very unhappy and

05:00 → 05:03

then all of a sudden comes this young warrior.

05:03 → 05:06

This young man who takes a stone and

05:06 → 05:10

slays the biggest giant that was against them.

05:10 → 05:13

And they loved him!

05:13 → 05:16

They go after him. They sing wonderful

05:16 → 05:20

songs of praise to him.

05:20 → 05:23

They rejoice because David is the wonder child.

05:23 → 05:26

He's the one that we want.

05:26 → 05:30

He's the one that we like.

05:30 → 05:33

And Saul went into a spiral of despair and

05:33 → 05:36

jealousy and anger and

05:36 → 05:40

suicidal behavior.

05:40 → 05:43

And he beomes almost crazy,

05:43 → 05:46

to the point that he hates David.

05:46 → 05:49

It's NOT a good time

05:49 → 05:53

to be living as God's children,

05:53 → 05:56

let alone to be the prophet

05:56 → 05:59

that God had sent to speak to God's people.

05:59 → 06:03

But yet, that's where Samuel finds himself ...

06:03 → 06:06

dealing with Saul, who is obsessed

06:06 → 06:09

with getting rid of David, and God

06:09 → 06:13

coming to him and saying: I have selected

06:13 → 06:16

a new king and I want you to go

06:16 → 06:19

and anoint him. And Samuel's immediate

06:19 → 06:22

reaction was: I can't do that. If Saul

06:22 → 06:26

finds out about this, the state of mind that he is in,

06:26 → 06:29

this is not going to be good.

06:29 → 06:32

Notice how God doesn't really argue with Samuel?

06:32 → 06:36

Doesn't say: No. You're still going to do this.

06:36 → 06:39

God just says: This is what you're going to do.

06:39 → 06:42

You're going to take the heifer and you're going to go

06:42 → 06:46

down and say: We're going to have a sacrifice and

06:46 → 06:49

in the middle of that party, I'm going to show you

06:49 → 06:52

who you are going to anoint as the next king.

06:52 → 06:55

It will be someone from Jesse's family.

06:55 → 06:59

So Samuel takes this heifer and off they go

06:59 → 07:02

so that they can

07:02 → 07:05

anoint the next king.

07:05 → 07:09

Brings Jesse's family there, his seven sons ...

07:09 → 07:12

they consecrate them ... they set them apart for

07:12 → 07:15

this holy activity and the sons start parading themselves

07:15 → 07:19

before Samuel.

07:19 → 07:22

And the oldest son comes first and Samuel thinks

07:22 → 07:25

in his head: This has GOT to be the one.

07:25 → 07:28

Here stands before me, the LORD's anointed.

07:28 → 07:32

This one has GOT to be it.

07:32 → 07:35

And the LORD said to him:

07:35 → 07:38

Absolutely not.

07:38 → 07:42

I don't select things

07:42 → 07:45

the way you people select things.

07:45 → 07:48

I don't look at what's on the exterior and say:

07:48 → 07:52

This is the one that I want. I don't judge things by

07:52 → 07:55

appearances, I look at the heart.

07:55 → 07:58

Because appearances can be deceiving.

07:58 → 08:01

And it was not only the oldest son

08:01 → 08:05

that was rejected, but the

08:05 → 08:08

second son that was rejected and the third son

08:08 → 08:11

that was rejected. And the fourth son

08:11 → 08:15

that was rejected and the fifth son

08:15 → 08:18

that was rejected and the sixth son that was rejected

08:18 → 08:21

and the seventh son. All of them that were there

08:21 → 08:25

were rejected. And Samuel

08:25 → 08:28

finally had to say to Jesse: Don't you have any more?

08:28 → 08:31

And Jesse said: Oh yeah ... there's the youngest one.

08:31 → 08:34

He's out with his sheep.

08:34 → 08:38

Samuel said:

08:38 → 08:41

Go and get him.

08:41 → 08:44

He said: We're not going to do anything ...

08:44 → 08:48

We're not going to sit down and eat until he comes.

08:48 → 08:51

And in comes David. Handsome,

08:51 → 08:54

ruddy in appearance.

08:54 → 08:58

But we know that's NOT what he was selected for.

08:58 → 09:01

Because the LORD looks INSIDE,

09:01 → 09:04

at the heart and

09:04 → 09:07

it was God who picked that youngest son ...

09:07 → 09:11

the most unlikely to be His anointed.

09:11 → 09:14

And He had him anointed by

09:14 → 09:17

Samuel with the oil

09:17 → 09:21

to be the next king.

09:21 → 09:24

That was a shadow

09:24 → 09:27

of what was to come when God sent His Messiah,

09:27 → 09:31

the heir to David's throne.

09:31 → 09:34

The One who was going to reign on David's throne forever.

09:34 → 09:37

He sent Christ into this world

09:37 → 09:40

in the appearance of a man.

09:40 → 09:44

And the outward appearance didn't mean a thing.

09:44 → 09:47

People weren't attracted to Jesus

09:47 → 09:50

because He was a stunningly handsome man.

09:50 → 09:54

He wasn't selected

09:54 → 09:57

for the way He looked.

09:57 → 10:00

He was selected for Who He was ...

10:00 → 10:04

the Son of God,

10:04 → 10:07

who appeared in human flesh

10:07 → 10:10

and yet ... was truly the Messiah of the world.

10:10 → 10:13

The wise men came from afar to worship Him ...

10:13 → 10:17

to bring him gifts, great gifts

10:17 → 10:20

of gold and frankincense and myrrh,

10:20 → 10:23

to lay at His feet.

10:23 → 10:27

Because He was the Lord's anointed ... the chosen One

10:27 → 10:30

who was going to take care of people's greatest needs.

10:30 → 10:33

That He would be greater than David himself was

10:33 → 10:37

because He was going to be eternal and

10:37 → 10:40

take care of people's sins.

10:40 → 10:43

Because He goes right INTO THE HEART

10:43 → 10:46

of every person, and there He

10:46 → 10:50

finds a heart that is filled with sin

10:50 → 10:53

and hatred for God and is dead to

10:53 → 10:56

anything that is good.

10:56 → 11:00

He is the One that is taking care of that sin

11:00 → 11:03

with His death on the cross of Calvary.

11:03 → 11:06

And it is our baptisms that unite us with Christ

11:06 → 11:10

in that death. It is as if

11:10 → 11:13

we had died with Him as well.

11:13 → 11:16

And we are united with Him in the resurrection for

11:16 → 11:20

the forgiveness of our sins.

11:20 → 11:23

So that we, too, will have eternal life.

11:23 → 11:26

At Jesus' baptism, He was anointed

11:26 → 11:29

by the Holy Spirit and with power

11:29 → 11:33

to accomplish that will.

11:33 → 11:36

Just as David was anointed with the Holy Spirit

11:36 → 11:39

and with power to do what God had asked of him.

11:39 → 11:43

A difficult, a horrendous job,

11:43 → 11:46

because for years,

11:46 → 11:49

Saul would trace him down, track him,

11:49 → 11:53

go after him ... to kill him!

11:53 → 11:56

That he establishes himself

11:56 → 11:59

as the King over Israel after Saul's death and

11:59 → 12:02

Saul's family is upset with David, and

12:02 → 12:06

comes after him.

12:06 → 12:09

David, thinking that he was above reproach

12:09 → 12:12

in his sin with Bathsheba, brought so much evil

12:12 → 12:16

into his own life and his own family

12:16 → 12:19

that his sons fought forever to the death

12:19 → 12:22

over who was going to reign.

12:22 → 12:26

Yet the Spirit of the LORD

12:26 → 12:29

was on David, not because he was perfect,

12:29 → 12:32

but because the LORD had chosen him

12:32 → 12:35

to lead His people ...

12:35 → 12:39

set him apart to do His work.

12:39 → 12:42

It's the Spirit of the LORD that in David caused him

12:42 → 12:45

to understand that.

12:45 → 12:49

That he was NOT a perfect human being;

12:49 → 12:52

but he was a HORRIBLE sinner,

12:52 → 12:55

someone who needed God's forgiveness and

12:55 → 12:59

went to God daily and REJOICED in the fact that

12:59 → 13:02

he WAS forgiven. And was reminded of

13:02 → 13:05

the blessings of God and reminded God's people of that:

13:05 → 13:08

Put the worship of God first and foremost

13:08 → 13:12

before God's children, to do

13:12 → 13:15

what God had selected him to do.

13:15 → 13:18

Just as God's own Son ... did the work that God the Father

13:18 → 13:22

had selected for Him to do,

13:22 → 13:25

which was EXTREMELY difficult.

13:25 → 13:28

It was horrifyingly painful.

13:28 → 13:32

Yet He did that work

13:32 → 13:35

because it was what God had selected,

13:35 → 13:38

chosen, and appointed Him to do

13:38 → 13:41

to accomplish the salvation

13:41 → 13:45

of all people. And we remind ourselves today

13:45 → 13:48

that that ... same ... Spirit

13:48 → 13:51

has come on us.

13:51 → 13:55

And today is the day for us to realize

13:55 → 13:58

that in our baptisms, we have been given power.

13:58 → 14:01

Power enough to sit back

14:01 → 14:05

and complain about everything that's not being done and

14:05 → 14:08

who's not doing work and what we can't do.

14:08 → 14:11

The time for all of us

14:11 → 14:14

to stand up on our God-given Christian feet

14:14 → 14:18

and say: This is what God

14:18 → 14:21

called ME to do.

14:21 → 14:24

God has given you the power of His Holy Spirit

14:24 → 14:28

to do His work, to accomplish His will,

14:28 → 14:31

to carry out His ministry.

14:31 → 14:34

And THAT is a TREMENDOUS gift.

14:34 → 14:38

And it is NOT going to be easy.

14:38 → 14:41

We just need to get that out of our heads right away.

14:41 → 14:44

It never WAS easy; it never WILL BE easy.

14:44 → 14:47

It is always going to be difficult.

14:47 → 14:51

Because we're not like the world and

14:51 → 14:54

the world is going to make it a struggle. But look what

14:54 → 14:57

God's people did when they wanted to be like the world

14:57 → 15:01

God gave them to it.

15:01 → 15:04

And they hated it. We're to fight with the power and

15:04 → 15:07

the strength of our baptism each and every day.

15:07 → 15:11

To get up

15:11 → 15:14

and say once again: I'm not a perfect person.

15:14 → 15:17

I'm a horrible, terrible miserable sinner but

15:17 → 15:20

God loves me and He has

15:20 → 15:24

forgiven me once again today.

15:24 → 15:27

And today I wake up and say:

15:27 → 15:30

I CAN bless His Name. I can praise Him.

15:30 → 15:34

I WILL do His work.

15:34 → 15:37

I WILL carry out His ministry in my life

15:37 → 15:40

as a husband ... as a wife as a parent ... as a child.

15:40 → 15:44

As someone who goes to work

15:44 → 15:47

and carries out their God-given work. I will

15:47 → 15:50

proclaim Christ through my congregation. I will be here

15:50 → 15:53

active in worship. I will be here actively

15:53 → 15:57

seeking to support the ministry that goes on here

15:57 → 16:00

because God has called me to do it.

16:00 → 16:03

He has given us all unique and varied gifts

16:03 → 16:07

for the ministry of the Word

16:07 → 16:10

in this building.

16:10 → 16:13

So that others may know that Jesus Christ is

16:13 → 16:17

the Lord's anointed. So that children may be

16:17 → 16:20

instructed and taught that their sins are forgiven.

16:20 → 16:23

That we, as adults, can struggle together through

16:23 → 16:26

the difficulties of this life

16:26 → 16:30

knowing that our eternal life is secure.

16:30 → 16:33

We will be free ... free from all of the sin and

16:33 → 16:36

corruption that is here.

16:36 → 16:40

We are the Lord's anointed.

16:40 → 16:43

Anointed in our baptisms

16:43 → 16:46

with the power of the Word and the power of the Holy Spirit.

16:46 → 16:50

That same Spirit and Word

16:50 → 16:53

that came to David; that came to our Lord and Savior,

16:53 → 16:56

Jesus Christ ...

16:56 → 17:00

has been poured out on us generously.

17:00 → 17:03

We see the LORD's anointed.

17:03 → 17:06

All we have to do is look around at each other

17:06 → 17:09

and see God's power

17:09 → 17:13

at work. His Word alive

17:13 → 17:16

in people's lives.

17:16 → 17:19

And we support that work. We encourage that work.

17:19 → 17:23

Together we do that work.

17:23 → 17:26

As we're reminded by the prophet Isaiah: So those

17:26 → 17:29

blessings of God will go to the ends of the earth

17:29 → 17:33

and all people will know that

17:33 → 17:36

Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior of all.

17:36 → 17:39

God's beloved Son, His Holy

17:39 → 17:42

and anointed One.

17:42 → 17:46

Amen.

17:46 → 17:49

Let us rise.

17:49 → 17:52

Now may the peace of God which goes beyond all of our

17:52 → 17:56

understanding, keep your hearts and your minds and

17:56 → 17:59

especially your lives, in the one true faith unto

17:59 → 18:02

life everlasting. Amen.
