On the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, FLOW ("For Love Of Water")

00:06 → 00:12

was invited to screen at the UN by General Assembly President Father Miguel d'Escoto Brockman.

00:14 → 00:18

The filmmakers also presented a petition with 20,000 names from all over the planet calling for a new human right:

00:18 → 00:21

the right to clean and potable water for all - Article 31.

00:22 → 00:28

It's been a very special day to hear Father Miguel, President Miguel d'Escoto

00:28 → 00:33

identify the similar concerns that were shown in this film:

00:33 → 00:37

FLOW: For Love Of Water, and to identify

00:37 → 00:41

the need for us to articulate that it is a public trust and a human right

00:42 → 00:47

we're hoping it becomes as an organising tour, an educational tour, a learning tour

00:47 → 00:52

and we thought that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was such a wonderful opportunity

00:52 → 00:54

How likely is it

00:54 → 01:00

that this issue of water as a human right in this day and age of wealth and technology

01:00 → 01:04

that every human being should have access to non-diseased water,

01:04 → 01:05

clean water,

01:05 → 01:07

how likely is that to become a reality?

01:14 → 01:17

The ambassador said that it's very possible

01:17 → 01:20

and particularly in light of the recent changes

01:20 → 01:24

to the concept of human rights that are going to include social human rights.

01:24 → 01:26

We're talking about the right to water for life

01:26 → 01:29

For drinking water, for life.

01:29 → 01:33

And I think it raises consciousness and it's hopefully one of the many threads

01:33 → 01:38

of right to water activism that is going on around the world with many groups doing many different things.

01:38 → 01:42

We thought it might be useful as a way to engage our audience

01:42 → 01:45

to let them sign a petition

01:45 → 01:48

to have the right to water considered as a human right

01:48 → 01:51

and I'm very proud and pleased to be able to present to you

01:51 → 01:53

the first 20,000 signatures

01:53 → 01:56

of the Article 31 petition

01:56 → 01:59

which just expresses from Irena and myself

01:59 → 02:03

and all the people involved in the film our great hope and ambition,

02:03 → 02:04

Embassador Miranda,

02:04 → 02:07

to see that the right to water is treated with the respect

02:07 → 02:10

that you have been discussing today and of course

02:10 → 02:12

that Father Miguel has been discussing today.

02:12 → 02:16

So it is a great pleasure and privilege to offer this to you. Thank you so much.

02:18 → 02:20

It's my privilege.

02:27 → 02:30

Article 31: Everyone has the right to clean and accessible water, adequate for the health and well-being of the individual and family,

02:30 → 02:34

and no one shall be deprived of such access or quality of water due to individual economic circumstance.

02:34 → 02:40
