RH: Good day I am with Andrew a master of the screen readers.

00:07 → 00:09

And, he is going to take us through a few forms.

00:09 → 00:12

But first Andrew, how long have you been using a screen reader?

00:14 → 00:18

AD: Probably about, or getting on for 30 years.

00:18 → 00:21

RH: And what do you mainly use these days?

00:21 → 00:25

AD: My preferred screen reader is Window Eyes, but I also use Jaws for

00:25 → 00:31

checking consistency of web pages and that sort of thing.

00:31 → 00:34

RH: And so are those the two we are going to use today? What Versions?

00:34 → 00:38

AD: Yes version 9 of Jaws and version 6.1 of Windows Eyes.

00:39 → 00:41

RH: Now, on the web we have increasingly got forms

00:41 → 00:44

how would you generally approach a form on a website?

00:44 → 00:48

AD: Well the first thing I would do, but perhaps before I say that,

00:49 → 00:54

the screen reader, well most screen readers, buffer the entire web page

00:55 → 01:00

so the first thing I do would be to read through the form to get a sense of what it was about

01:00 → 01:04

before I start doing any filling out. That's the way I would usually approach it.

01:05 → 01:11

And then, once I had done that, I'd go into what Jaws calls "forms" mode or

01:11 → 01:14

edit mode, or whatever term you want to use,

01:14 → 01:17

which allows me to interact with the form

01:17 → 01:21

and I'd fill it out. And quite often would be going in and out

01:21 → 01:25

of "forms" mode or "browse" mode depending on which school you go to

01:25 → 01:33

check things. If the form was done absolutely perfectly, as yours of course are ...

01:33 → 01:35

RH: (laugh) sometimes ...

01:35 → 01:38

AD: Then of course there is much less need to be dropping in and out of

01:38 → 01:41

those modes. But, because a lot of forms aren't done that way

01:41 → 01:45

it is important to be checking exactly what you are filling out.

01:45 → 01:48

RH: Okay can we first look at a form and labelling

01:48 → 01:53

these form controls, or input fields. Could you run through the form for us?

01:53 → 01:54

AD: Right

01:54 → 01:58

[READER: "Heading level 1, label and title. Blank. Name colon edit.

01:58 → 02:00

Email colon edit.

02:00 → 02:03

Choose a subscription option from below, colon.

02:03 → 02:06

Blank. Radio button not checked weekly. Radio button not

02:06 → 02:11

checked, two of three, monthly. Radio button not checked three of three, quarterly."]

02:11 → 02:14

RH: In that case you couldn't actually put anything into the form could you?

02:14 → 02:16

AD: Not at this stage.

02:16 → 02:19

RH: So say you wanted to put your name in. How would you put your name in?

02:19 → 02:21

AD: I'd go to the top of the form

02:21 → 02:23

RH: And you can use a shortcut for that?

02:23 → 02:27

AD: Control Home. I can type E to get to the first edit field.

02:27 → 02:29

[READER: "Name colon edit"]. AD: And, then I hit enter

02:29 → 02:32

[READER: "Forms mode on name colon edit, type-in-text"]

02:32 → 02:34

AD: Okay...

02:34 → 02:36

and then I tab ...

02:36 → 02:39

[READER: "Email colon edit, type-in-text"]

02:39 → 02:42

[DISPLAY - entering email address. Weekly radio button indicated]

02:42 → 02:46

[READER: "Weekly radio button not checked. To change the selection press up

02:46 → 02:48

or down arrow"]

02:48 → 02:51

RH: Ok now what we noticed there Andrew, was that in read

02:51 → 02:54

you got a sentence which said choose subscription from options below,

02:54 → 02:58

but in the forms mode we don't actually get that piece, do we?

02:58 → 03:04

AD: No. The forms mode will only read what is in the fields to be filled out.

03:04 → 03:07

It doesn't read anything else on the screen.

03:07 → 03:11

RH: So, if you put a little instruction in between them, in forms mode

03:11 → 03:14

it could be missed. Is that one of the reasons why you say you have to go in and out of forms

03:14 → 03:18

AD: Oh yes, that's why I would always be checking the form before

03:18 → 03:21

I start filling it out and even when I'm filling it out to make sure that

03:21 → 03:23

I know what's coming next.

03:23 → 03:27

RH: Can we see what happens if we put a title attribute

03:27 → 03:30

to those weekly, monthly and quarterly options?

03:30 → 03:34

You've got another version with titles, can we look at that? FADE

03:34 → 03:37

[READER: "Forms mode on. Name colon edit type-in-text"].

03:37 → 03:39

AD: That's name.

03:39 → 03:42

[READER: "Email colon edit, type-in-text.

03:43 → 03:47

Weekly subscription radio button not checked.

03:47 → 03:50

One of three to change the .. Monthly subscription

03:50 → 03:54

radio button, checked. To change the selection press up or down arrow.

03:54 → 03:58

RH: Now, for this one Andrew you have put in a title attribute, "monthly subscription"

03:58 → 04:01

so you can understand what it is.

04:01 → 04:03

AD: Yes it's reading the monthly ...

04:04 → 04:05

FADE OUT
