Sermon text: Matthew 7:7-11 [NIV]

00:05 → 00:08

... this sermon text recorded for us in Matthew's Gospel

00:08 → 00:12

where we read from Chapter 7, beginning with Verse 7:

00:12 → 00:15

"ASK AND IT WILL BE GIVEN TO YOU;

00:15 → 00:18

SEEK AND YOU WILL FIND;

00:18 → 00:22

KNOCK AND THE DOOR WILL BE OPENED TO YOU.

00:22 → 00:25

FOR EVERYONE WHO ASKS RECEIVES;

00:25 → 00:28

HE WHO SEEKS FINDS;

00:28 → 00:32

AND TO HIM WHO KNOCKS, THE DOOR WILL BE OPENED.

00:32 → 00:35

WHICH OF YOU, IF HIS SON ASKS FOR BREAD,

00:35 → 00:38

WILL GIVE HIM A STONE? OR IF HE ASKS FOR A FISH,

00:38 → 00:41

WILL GIVE HIM A SNAKE? IF YOU,

00:41 → 00:45

THEN, THOUGH YOU ARE EVIL, KNOW HOW TO GIVE GOOD GIFTS

00:45 → 00:48

TO YOUR CHILDREN, HOW MUCH MORE WILL YOUR FATHER

00:48 → 00:51

IN HEAVEN GIVE GOOD GIFTS TO THOSE

00:51 → 00:55

WHO ASK HIM!" This is the Word of our Lord.

00:55 → 00:58

Let us pray:

00:58 → 01:01

Glorious and gracious God, may the words of my mouth and

01:01 → 01:05

the meditation of each of our hearts be acceptable in Your

01:05 → 01:08

sight, our only source of hope and comfort.

01:08 → 01:11

Amen.

01:11 → 01:14

Text taken from the HOLY BIBLE:

01:14 → 01:18

NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION 1978,

01:18 → 01:21

used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers.

01:21 → 01:24

Dear Followers of our

01:24 → 01:28

Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ:

01:28 → 01:31

I used to think that, if I asked a question,

01:31 → 01:34

people were going to think that I was stupid.

01:34 → 01:38

Or that I was foolish.

01:38 → 01:41

But I think a lot of people share

01:41 → 01:44

that common thought in their lives.

01:44 → 01:47

That if we don't know ...

01:47 → 01:51

it's better for us to just live

01:51 → 01:54

in our own ignorance, than to maybe ask the question

01:54 → 01:57

to have someone think that we don't know

01:57 → 02:01

the answer. So we have some convoluted thinking.

02:01 → 02:04

Because the only way we're going to get to

02:04 → 02:07

know things, is to ask

02:07 → 02:11

questions. To be

02:11 → 02:14

inquisitive of the world around us. To find out

02:14 → 02:17

answers that we need to know.

02:17 → 02:20

Asking is what we as people,

02:20 → 02:24

really need to know how to do

02:24 → 02:27

to be aware of and to take advantage of that.

02:27 → 02:30

I mean there are even commercials on television

02:30 → 02:34

that talk about how people will ask tons of questions

02:34 → 02:37

about insigificant things.

02:37 → 02:40

And then as they sit in a doctor's office,

02:40 → 02:44

and he says to them: Do you have any questions?

02:44 → 02:47

They remain silent.

02:47 → 02:50

Sometimes,

02:50 → 02:53

it is really clear in our lives

02:53 → 02:57

that we don't receive information,

02:57 → 03:00

we don't gain understanding,

03:00 → 03:03

because we don't ask.

03:03 → 03:07

And Jesus shared that

03:07 → 03:10

same thought with His disciples

03:10 → 03:13

hundreds of years ago when He said to them:

03:13 → 03:17

Ask! I want you to ask

03:17 → 03:20

your heavenly Father for the blessings that you need

03:20 → 03:23

for your life. Ask and God

03:23 → 03:26

our heavenly Father will answer you.

03:26 → 03:30

He will answer you because you are

03:30 → 03:33

His child through faith. God doesn't

03:33 → 03:36

answer us or hear our prayers because

03:36 → 03:40

we are so wonderful or we think that we have to

03:40 → 03:43

be in a good place in our life spiritually

03:43 → 03:46

in order to go to God so that He's going to hear us.

03:46 → 03:50

God's ears are open to us because of what

03:50 → 03:53

His Son did and our faith in the fact

03:53 → 03:56

that we believe and trust that

03:56 → 03:59

His Son, Jesus Christ, is our Lord

03:59 → 04:03

and Savior. That, we, in and of

04:03 → 04:06

ourselves are sinful human beings

04:06 → 04:09

that could do nothing

04:09 → 04:13

to save ourselves. We could do nothing to gain

04:13 → 04:16

God's worthy attention

04:16 → 04:19

to make us His own. We were born as children of sin.

04:19 → 04:23

We were born as the children of Satan. We were

04:23 → 04:26

the enemies of God until by the

04:26 → 04:29

grace of God ... and the power ...

04:29 → 04:32

and the love of God ...

04:32 → 04:36

He sent to us His Holy Spirit

04:36 → 04:39

and His Word, to bring us to faith.

04:39 → 04:42

To teach us,

04:42 → 04:46

of the glories of His heaven

04:46 → 04:49

and the extent of His love

04:49 → 04:52

that He would take children of sin

04:52 → 04:56

destined to be condemned.

04:56 → 04:59

Children of Satan who wanted

04:59 → 05:02

nothing to do with God.

05:02 → 05:05

But to make them His own ...

05:05 → 05:09

to live in His grace. To live

05:09 → 05:12

in His love. To live in

05:12 → 05:15

His Kingdom. To be with Him

05:15 → 05:19

not just in this earth, protected by His care,

05:19 → 05:22

but to be with Him in the eternal glory of heaven

05:22 → 05:25

serving Him and praising Him

05:25 → 05:29

and seeing how wonderful He is

05:29 → 05:32

with our very own eyes.

05:32 → 05:35

That our heavenly Father

05:35 → 05:39

has brought us to faith

05:39 → 05:42

and trust in what His Son does

05:42 → 05:45

is that tremendous gift of God.

05:45 → 05:48

That He loves us so much

05:48 → 05:52

that He not only sent His Son to be our Savior;

05:52 → 05:55

He sends the Holy Spirit

05:55 → 05:58

to call us to be His own!

05:58 → 06:02

To live with Him.

06:02 → 06:05

To interact with Him. To be able to

06:05 → 06:08

approach God in the holiness

06:08 → 06:12

and blamelessness

06:12 → 06:15

of Christ. To have that same access

06:15 → 06:18

that we have with our own earthly parents.

06:18 → 06:21

To run to Him when we're happy and

06:21 → 06:25

overjoyed with what's going on in our life.

06:25 → 06:28

To thank Him for those blessings that have

06:28 → 06:31

come to us and created in us joy and

06:31 → 06:35

made us happy and made us smile today.

06:35 → 06:38

To thank Him for the children who

06:38 → 06:41

bring us joy and the wonderful things

06:41 → 06:45

that they've done.

06:45 → 06:48

And just as we go to our parents when we're in need,

06:48 → 06:51

and we need and desire help,

06:51 → 06:54

we run to our heavenly Father

06:54 → 06:58

in the same manner. To pray for those same

06:58 → 07:01

children that are aggravating us to no end

07:01 → 07:04

because of their behavior.

07:04 → 07:08

To pray that God would come to them and strengthen them

07:08 → 07:11

and keep them in the faith.

07:11 → 07:14

That God would protect our loved ones

07:14 → 07:18

and care for us ...

07:18 → 07:21

because He sees us in our need. He sees us

07:21 → 07:24

in our daily life. He is our heavenly Father

07:24 → 07:27

who loves us.

07:27 → 07:31

And our Savior reminds us today that we're to go to Him

07:31 → 07:34

and ask. Yes! He knows exactly

07:34 → 07:37

what we need even before we could think of it!

07:37 → 07:41

But He encourages us

07:41 → 07:44

to come to him: Ask and

07:44 → 07:47

you will receive. Seek

07:47 → 07:51

and you will find. Knock

07:51 → 07:54

and the door will be opened to you.

07:54 → 07:57

That God hears us ...

07:57 → 08:00

It's such a wonderful blessing! But it's not some

08:00 → 08:04

kind of magic door that we're supposed to knock on

08:04 → 08:07

and that when we open it up, all of our heart's desires

08:07 → 08:10

are there. It is what is there

08:10 → 08:14

to keep us in the faith.

08:14 → 08:17

To strengthen us because our God

08:17 → 08:20

knows what's in the future for us.

08:20 → 08:24

Our God wants us kept in His

08:24 → 08:27

eternal care. And just like anyone

08:27 → 08:30

who is a parent understands what

08:30 → 08:33

their children needs ... Jesus puts it simply:

08:33 → 08:37

If your child comes to you and asks for bread,

08:37 → 08:40

who of you is gonna give him a stone?

08:40 → 08:43

If your child comes to you and wants a fish,

08:43 → 08:47

who of you is gonna give him a snake?

08:47 → 08:50

You know how to treat your children.

08:50 → 08:53

You know what your children need.

08:53 → 08:57

When your 12-year-old comes and says to you:

08:57 → 09:00

Dad, I need a car.

09:00 → 09:03

You're gonna say: No!

09:03 → 09:06

And as a parent, you understand why that is.

09:06 → 09:10

It's for their own safety

09:10 → 09:13

and the safety of others.

09:13 → 09:16

When your daughter runs up to you and says:

09:16 → 09:20

Mom, I wanna wear this 8-inch skirt today

09:20 → 09:23

because everybody who's 13, is now.

09:23 → 09:26

And you say ... Nooo!

09:26 → 09:30

You understand the reasoning

09:30 → 09:33

behind that.

09:33 → 09:36

Jesus taught us that

09:36 → 09:39

because the same thing is true about our heavenly Father.

09:39 → 09:43

Because sometimes

09:43 → 09:46

we come to God not knowing what's ahead for us.

09:46 → 09:49

And thinking there is one thing that's the only thing

09:49 → 09:53

that we need. It's the only thing that's going to make us

09:53 → 09:56

happy and God looks us right in the face and says:

09:56 → 09:59

No!

09:59 → 10:03

And we come back and understand that

10:03 → 10:06

He loves us so much He is not

10:06 → 10:09

going to give us something that is detrimental.

10:09 → 10:12

And it's going to hurt our faith.

10:12 → 10:16

The other thing is, sometimes He says:

10:16 → 10:19

Not now! Look at our example of Hannah

10:19 → 10:22

in the Old Testament Lesson for today.

10:22 → 10:26

How many times must she have gone to her heavenly Father

10:26 → 10:29

praying that she would have a child!

10:29 → 10:32

Praying that God would bless her with an heir!

10:32 → 10:36

But when the time was right,

10:36 → 10:39

God granted her that request.

10:39 → 10:42

But in the meantime, she kept coming

10:42 → 10:45

to God ... with her prayers

10:45 → 10:49

and with her concerns. And pouring out

10:49 → 10:52

her soul to Him.

10:52 → 10:55

We're reminded that sometimes God answers our prayers with

10:55 → 10:59

such a resounding YES ... it astounds us.

10:59 → 11:02

And then we hear those words

11:02 → 11:05

of Paul, in our Epistle Lesson

11:05 → 11:09

where he said to the Philippians: Present your requests

11:09 → 11:12

to God with thanksgiving.

11:12 → 11:15

With rejoicing. Returning to

11:15 → 11:19

Him for the blessings that He has poured out upon you.

11:19 → 11:22

The blessings that He gives to each of us

11:22 → 11:25

as His children as we live in this world.

11:25 → 11:28

We're reminded today that God is waiting

11:28 → 11:32

in His heaven ... to bless us!

11:32 → 11:35

To bless us with the things that we NEED

11:35 → 11:38

to keep us in the faith.

11:38 → 11:42

Blessings of gentleness, as Paul

11:42 → 11:45

encouraged the Philippians to be:

11:45 → 11:48

To let their gentleness be shown to all.

11:48 → 11:52

To let our light in Christ shine forth.

11:52 → 11:55

To direct others to our heavenly

11:55 → 11:58

Father so that they, too, may know

11:58 → 12:01

His blessings and His love.

12:01 → 12:05

Now is not the time for us to be silent.

12:05 → 12:08

Not in worship and not in prayer.

12:08 → 12:11

But today is the day ...

12:11 → 12:15

to ask, to seek,

12:15 → 12:18

to knock, to know that

12:18 → 12:21

God will hear us. He will answer us. He will give to us.

12:21 → 12:25

He will open the door to us.

12:25 → 12:28

And supply us with everything we need

12:28 → 12:31

to keep our bodies and souls

12:31 → 12:34

safe in Him until He calls us

12:34 → 12:38

to be with Him for all eternity.

12:38 → 12:41

So start talking. Start asking.

12:41 → 12:44

Go to our heavenly Father

12:44 → 12:48

and He will hear and

12:48 → 12:51

answer your requests.

12:51 → 12:54

Amen.

12:54 → 12:58

Let us rise. Now may the peace

12:58 → 13:01

of God, which goes beyond all of our understanding, keep

13:01 → 13:04

your hearts and your minds and especially your lives,

13:04 → 13:07

in the one true faith unto life everlasting. Amen.
