Transcript for 7 Key Questions to Ask Your LMS Vendor about SCORM

Time Content
00:07 → 00:10

Hey – this is Susan from Rustici Software.

00:10 → 00:14

And we’re talking about RFPs for learning management systems today.

00:14 → 00:18

Specifically, I’ve got the seven most important questions you need to ask

00:18 → 00:24

if you’re planning to include SCORM as a requirement in your RFP.

00:24 → 00:26

We’re going to skip the most important question –

00:26 → 00:28

why you want SCORM in the first place.

00:28 → 00:30

That’s a whole ‘nother video.

00:30 → 00:32

We’re going to start with the assumption that

00:32 → 00:35

you actually do want and need to have SCORM

00:35 → 00:36

included in your LMS,

00:36 → 00:37

so the issue remains

00:37 → 00:42

of how to get it in there in a way that allows you to get the most out of it.

00:42 → 00:44

Now, at Rustici Software,

00:44 → 00:47

we do SCORM and we do … SCORM.

00:47 → 00:49

It’s all we do.

00:49 → 00:51

As a result, we’ve seen it done well

00:51 → 00:53

and we’ve seen it done quite

00:53 → 00:56

… can I say badly? Horribly?

00:56 → 00:59

Hair-pullingly?

00:59 → 01:01

It's one thing to say you're SCORM conformant or

01:01 → 01:03

compatible; it's quite another

01:03 → 01:06

thing to actually be conformant or compatible.

01:06 → 01:10

As a result, we hear a lot of bad things about SCORM.

01:10 → 01:13

But we know it’s possible for you to get what you need

01:13 → 01:15

and not have it be a complete headache.

01:15 → 01:18

If you’re out to have SCORM in your LMS,

01:18 → 01:20

these are the seven things we recommend you

01:20 → 01:24

ask your LMS vendor before signing on the dotted line.

01:24 → 01:28

(We actually have more than 27 of them

01:28 → 01:31

but we didn't want to include them all in this video.

01:31 → 01:34

So if you're interested in a more complete discussion,

01:34 → 01:35

visit our website

01:35 → 01:36

scorm.com

01:36 → 01:39

to get the paper with the full discussion with all the questions.

01:39 → 01:42

So ... seven questions.

01:46 → 01:48

Currently, there are five versions of SCORM.

01:48 → 01:51

1.1, 1.2 and then within

01:51 → 01:54

2004, a second, third and fourth edition.

01:54 → 01:58

The most widely adopted right now is 1.2

01:58 → 02:01

so at a minimum, you're going to want them to support that.

02:03 → 02:06

SCORM 2004 adds a lot of great functionality

02:06 → 02:09

but it is not quite commonly adopted ...

02:09 → 02:10

yet.

02:10 → 02:12

So you might want to keep that in mind.

02:16 → 02:21

Certification ensures that a system meets the

02:21 → 02:23

letter of the specification

02:23 → 02:25

not necessarily your functional needs.

02:25 → 02:31

But certification not necessarily the most important thing.

02:31 → 02:33

If they aren't certified,

02:33 → 02:36

you can ask them to ensure their claim of

02:36 → 02:38

SCORM conformance is legitimate

02:38 → 02:40

by showing you their test suite logs.

02:40 → 02:44

ADL produces a conformance test suite

02:44 → 02:47

that runs all of the same tests

02:47 → 02:49

that a certification auditor would do.

02:49 → 02:50

Ask to see those logs.

02:50 → 02:54

and they're going to tell you whether or not they're SCORM conformant

02:54 → 02:57

whether or not they've gone through the certification process.

02:57 → 02:59

BIG NOTE HERE:

02:59 → 03:04

If they cannot pass the full set of conformance tests,

03:04 → 03:08

they are not - most definitely NOT -

03:08 → 03:09

SCORM conformant.

03:09 → 03:12

They might be SCORM-ish

03:12 → 03:13

SCORM-y

03:13 → 03:15

kinda SCORM-like

03:15 → 03:18

but they are not SCORM conformant.

03:18 → 03:20

And implementations like that

03:20 → 03:22

are the most dangerous.

03:22 → 03:26

We're talking unending compatibility problems for you.

03:26 → 03:30

And tons of headaches for us because people start complaining about SCORM.

03:30 → 03:33

If there's anything you're going to get out of this video,

03:33 → 03:34

please, please, please,

03:34 → 03:37

ask the vendor, demand that the vendor

03:37 → 03:41

show you some kind of proof that they are SCORM conformant.

03:46 → 03:49

You're going to want to get in and play with the LMS a bit

03:49 → 03:51

and look for several different things.

03:51 → 03:55

LIke how many windows does the LMS open for the user?

03:55 → 03:58

Does it provide progress and status reports?

03:58 → 04:02

Does it have an easy to use and navigate course menu?

04:02 → 04:07

Things of that nature that are going to impact the experience for your learners.

04:14 → 04:18

You want to make sure the system does more than just mark things as completed.

04:18 → 04:22

You want it to put data where you expect it to go

04:22 → 04:25

and use it the way you expect it to be used.

04:30 → 04:33

SCORM can provide a wealth of information

04:33 → 04:35

about what a learner does in the course

04:35 → 04:39

but it's up to the LMS to keep the data and use it.

04:39 → 04:41

You want to know what kind of reports there are

04:41 → 04:45

how data is tracked, what the learner is going to see about that information

04:45 → 04:46

at a minimum.

04:54 → 04:58

A sandbox is wonderful for playing and testing content

04:58 → 05:00

but it's not that useful

05:00 → 05:06

if the sandbox does not precisely replicate your production environment.

05:14 → 05:18

These can create huge support headaches

05:18 → 05:21

and are notorious for causing compatibility problems.

05:21 → 05:25

A lot of it stems from a misunderstanding about what SCORM requires.

05:25 → 05:28

SCORM requires JavaScript

05:28 → 05:29

not Java.

05:30 → 05:32

And that's seven questions!

05:32 → 05:34

I hope this gives you a good start

05:34 → 05:36

on what to ask your LMS vendor

05:36 → 05:38

to ensure you get a SCORM implementation

05:38 → 05:40

that brings you joy rather than headaches.

05:40 → 05:44

If you have any questions about anything I've mentioned or SCORM in general,

05:44 → 05:46

please drop by our website

05:46 → 05:47

at scorm.com

05:47 → 05:49

and ask us. We like questions!

05:49 → 05:52

So 'til next time, I'm Susan with Rustici Software.

05:52 → 05:54

Where we make SCORM easy.
