Text from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION from

00:03 → 00:06

Paul in his letter to the Philippians

00:06 → 00:09

where we read from Chapter 4, beginning with

00:09 → 00:13

Verse 4: REJOICE IN THE LORD

00:13 → 00:16

ALWAYS. I WILL SAY IT AGAIN: REJOICE!

00:16 → 00:19

LET YOUR GENTLENESS BE EVIDENT TO ALL.

00:19 → 00:23

THE LORD IS NEAR.

00:23 → 00:26

DO NOT BE ANXIOUS ABOUT ANYTHING, BUT IN

00:26 → 00:29

EVERYTHING, BY PRAYER AND PETITION, WITH THANKSGIVING,

00:29 → 00:33

PRESENT YOUR REQUESTS TO GOD.

00:33 → 00:36

AND THE PEACE OF GOD, WHICH TRANSCENDS ALL UNDERSTANDING,

00:36 → 00:39

WILL GUARD YOUR HEARTS

00:39 → 00:42

AND YOUR MINDS IN CHRIST JESUS.

00:42 → 00:46

This is the Word of our Lord; let us pray:

00:46 → 00:49

This is the day that the Lord has made.

00:49 → 00:52

Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Amen.

00:52 → 00:55

Pastor Dave

00:55 → 00:58

motions to the congregation

00:58 → 01:01

to be seated

01:01 → 01:04

before delivering the sermon

01:04 → 01:06

for this third Sunday of Advent: December 13, 2009

01:06 → 01:10

Dear Followers of our Lord and Savior,

01:10 → 01:13

Jesus Christ.

01:13 → 01:16

This week I read an interesting article. An

01:16 → 01:20

interesting article about letters to Santa.

01:20 → 01:23

And our letters to Santa

01:23 → 01:26

in the last couple of years,

01:26 → 01:29

have changed drastically.

01:29 → 01:33

Probably doesn't surprise us,

01:33 → 01:36

that people making lists,

01:36 → 01:39

of things that they want,

01:39 → 01:43

have become much more demanding ...

01:43 → 01:46

much more specific. Some of them even said

01:46 → 01:49

at the end: There will be at least one more list to follow

01:49 → 01:53

of things that I really have to have,

01:53 → 01:56

before the list of things

01:56 → 01:59

that you can just give me if you have them.

01:59 → 02:02

(A moment passes ...

02:02 → 02:05

giving time to consider.)

02:05 → 02:09

Kind of interesting, isn't it,

02:09 → 02:12

where we've come as a society?

02:12 → 02:15

And how easy it is to let that society rub off on us

02:15 → 02:18

as Christians. How easy it can be for us to

02:18 → 02:22

get caught up in the things of this world

02:22 → 02:25

and become so fixated and obsessed and

02:25 → 02:28

anxious about what we're going to give

02:28 → 02:32

to people this year and what we're going to get from people

02:32 → 02:35

and will it they be happy and will it be enough and does it

02:35 → 02:38

look cheap and I can't afford to do this. We get caught up

02:38 → 02:42

in such turmoil!

02:42 → 02:45

The Apostle Paul comes to us

02:45 → 02:48

this morning and he says: Rejoice!

02:48 → 02:51

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again:

02:51 → 02:55

Rejoice!

02:55 → 02:58

Be happy! Realize the

02:58 → 03:01

blessings that you have and the wonderful opportunity

03:01 → 03:05

to be able to give, the wonderful opportunity

03:05 → 03:08

to be gracious in receiving.

03:08 → 03:11

To be able to share as one of those hearts

03:11 → 03:15

as John the Baptist said, of a heart that is truly devoted

03:15 → 03:18

to God.

03:18 → 03:21

If you have two coats, give to one who doesn't have any.

03:21 → 03:24

If you have food ...

03:24 → 03:28

share it. Simple acts of faith.

03:28 → 03:31

And the Apostle Paul says it's going to help us in this time

03:31 → 03:34

of rejoicing in our life.

03:34 → 03:38

It's realizing that our Lord is near.

03:38 → 03:41

He is ALWAYS with us. The time of His Day of Judgment

03:41 → 03:44

is closer today than it was yesterday, but

03:44 → 03:48

we're happy about that!

03:48 → 03:51

We're one day closer to our own death from this world and

03:51 → 03:54

being with God forever!

03:54 → 03:57

And we can rejoice in that because we know what God

03:57 → 04:01

has done. This morning we celebrated

04:01 → 04:04

baptism once again. And the same fact that applied

04:04 → 04:07

to me and to you, apply to Brendon as well.

04:07 → 04:11

He is one day closer

04:11 → 04:14

to his death today than he was yesterday.

04:14 → 04:17

But by the power of God and His Word

04:17 → 04:21

today he has been given faith,

04:21 → 04:24

the forgiveness of sins,

04:24 → 04:27

eternal life with God.

04:27 → 04:30

What a reason we have to rejoice.

04:30 → 04:34

What a reason we have to take our prayer requests

04:34 → 04:37

to God with hearts that are filled with joy.

04:37 → 04:40

With a reminder that we can

04:40 → 04:44

come rejoicing ... not with

04:44 → 04:47

a list of demands. Not that we come to God

04:47 → 04:48

only when we need Him,

04:48 → 04:51

and only when we're sad and only when we're sick

04:51 → 04:55

or when there's something horrible going on.

04:55 → 04:58

But we go to Him with every single thing that

04:58 → 05:01

excites us about our life.

05:01 → 05:04

That has thrilled us about our faith, that we have seen Him

05:04 → 05:08

working, not only in our life, but in the lives of others

05:08 → 05:11

because He is here. He is with us.

05:11 → 05:14

Today we have a person to pray for in Brendon.

05:14 → 05:18

We also can ask God that He would

05:18 → 05:21

inspire us to carry on our ministry.

05:21 → 05:24

To fulfill those words that we all spoke

05:24 → 05:28

this morning ... about how, with the help of God,

05:28 → 05:31

you and I are going to carry out a ministry

05:31 → 05:34

that shares the blessing of God with children.

05:34 → 05:38

And we carry that prayer request with

05:38 → 05:41

rejoicing to God. That we have

05:41 → 05:44

Sunday School teachers who can teach that Word.

05:44 → 05:47

That we have parents who are dedicated to

05:47 → 05:51

sharing God's Word with their children.

05:51 → 05:54

Who bring them to our school so that each and every day

05:54 → 05:57

they have a Christ-centered education.

05:57 → 06:01

That we have parents who will take as much time with their

06:01 → 06:04

children about writing a letter to Santa

06:04 → 06:07

yet every day they sit down with them and teach them how

06:07 → 06:11

to pray. Teach them

06:11 → 06:14

about their heavenly Father

06:14 → 06:17

and the comfort that we have received. If we're

06:17 → 06:20

focused on the joy that we have, the Apostle Paul

06:20 → 06:24

reminds us that we're not going to be

06:24 → 06:27

anxious about anything. And what good does it do us?

06:27 → 06:30

What good does it do us to

06:30 → 06:34

worry about what's going to happen this afternoon?

06:34 → 06:37

Or tomorrow? Or what we're going to wear? Or what

06:37 → 06:40

we're going to be like in five years?

06:40 → 06:44

Being anxious about those things does NOTHING to help

06:44 → 06:47

the situation. But we go with God with thanksgiving,

06:47 → 06:50

with thanksgiving because we know that

06:50 → 06:53

He is near us. That He's going to be the One

06:53 → 06:57

who is WITH us. Even through

06:57 → 07:00

the valley of the shadow of death ...

07:00 → 07:03

I ... will ... not ... fear ...

07:03 → 07:07

because God is with me.

07:07 → 07:10

He is there with ...

07:10 → 07:13

protecting us with His angels

07:13 → 07:17

each and every day.

07:17 → 07:20

But there is something today that I can be thankful for.

07:20 → 07:23

There is something each and every day that I can look at

07:23 → 07:26

in my heart and say: Dear God,

07:26 → 07:30

Thank You! That this day I realize, once again,

07:30 → 07:33

Your love. Your grace.

07:33 → 07:36

Your compassion. That I have seen You

07:36 → 07:40

working in this world. Spreading

07:40 → 07:43

that Gospel out to the ends of the earth.

07:43 → 07:46

And what joy that brings to me.

07:46 → 07:50

And my prayers are filled with that thanksgiving.

07:50 → 07:53

Not just with the anxieties of life and the worries

07:53 → 07:56

that are there. Just get rid of them!

07:56 → 07:59

The problem is we go to God with them and then we

07:59 → 08:03

pick them up and take them back to our house.

08:03 → 08:06

And we sit there surrounded by them all the time and

08:06 → 08:09

they're there, every minute of every day. And

08:09 → 08:13

we worry about them and we worry about them.

08:13 → 08:16

I don't think we honestly feel that we'd be comfortable if we

08:16 → 08:19

didn't have them with us.

08:19 → 08:23

But we like to talk about how we'd like to get rid of them.

08:23 → 08:26

Maybe some day.

08:26 → 08:29

Today's the day.

08:29 → 08:32

Today's the day we rejoice in what God has done for us.

08:32 → 08:36

And how thankful we are that He is going to

08:36 → 08:39

take care of us. And He is going to bless us.

08:39 → 08:42

He has given to us a peace

08:42 → 08:46

that goes beyond our understanding.

08:46 → 08:49

That peace of God

08:49 → 08:52

that comes into our life

08:52 → 08:56

with the knowledge that Jesus is our Lord and Savior.

08:56 → 08:59

That He has washed our lives free from our own sins.

08:59 → 09:02

and the filth of that sin and the punishment of

09:02 → 09:05

eternal death.

09:05 → 09:09

We have a peace, and a calm in knowing

09:09 → 09:12

that we live as the forgiven children of God ...

09:12 → 09:15

safe in His care.

09:15 → 09:19

Protected by His love.

09:19 → 09:22

That that peace gives us a calm

09:22 → 09:25

in the midst of all of the stresses and the anxieties

09:25 → 09:29

and the troubles of this world.

09:29 → 09:32

And anyone who is not a Christian

09:32 → 09:35

will never understand that.

09:35 → 09:38

They CAN'T understand it ... because they don't believe

09:38 → 09:42

that there is a God who loves them so much

09:42 → 09:45

that He would send His Son to die for them.

09:45 → 09:48

That He would call them to be His own.

09:48 → 09:52

That by the power of His Holy Spirit, He would work in them,

09:52 → 09:55

each and every day to keep them faithful.

09:55 → 09:58

To keep them on the path to eternal life.

09:58 → 10:02

To be with them ALL the time.

10:02 → 10:05

And there is our calm!

10:05 → 10:08

There is our peace!

10:08 → 10:11

There is the joy that we have in our salvation.

10:11 → 10:15

And we know that some day we are going to be rid

10:15 → 10:18

of all of this chaos and there will only be

10:18 → 10:21

the blessings of heaven. We pray that the Lord

10:21 → 10:25

come quickly and take us out of this world.

10:25 → 10:28

This world with all of its sin and its corruption and its decay.

10:28 → 10:31

to the place where He will wipe the tears

10:31 → 10:35

from our eyes.

10:35 → 10:38

Where we will be there and live in holiness and

10:38 → 10:41

blessedness forever.

10:41 → 10:44

Where there is just the joy of being with God and

10:44 → 10:48

praising Him for all that He has done.

10:48 → 10:51

We are so blessed

10:51 → 10:54

by our heavenly Father.

10:54 → 10:58

The danger is ... for us to become accustomed to it.

10:58 → 11:01

To take it for granted.

11:01 → 11:04

We become spoiled little children who only want

11:04 → 11:08

more and more and more.

11:08 → 11:11

And that's why we remind ourselves today with Paul's

11:11 → 11:14

words, that we have a blessed privilege in taking our

11:14 → 11:18

requests to God.

11:18 → 11:21

Why in our prayer life, we should be active.

11:21 → 11:24

That we should be rejoicing!

11:24 → 11:27

And thankful. And that we should be at peace.

11:27 → 11:31

And then we will hear those words of Paul, not only

11:31 → 11:34

in our mind, but they will be coming out of our lips

11:34 → 11:37

as well. We WILL REJOICE!

11:37 → 11:41

We will REJOICE in our salvation.

11:41 → 11:44

We will REJOICE in the gift of God's son.

11:44 → 11:47

We will REJOICE in eternal life.

11:47 → 11:51

I say it again:

11:51 → 11:54

REJOICE!

11:54 → 11:57

Amen.

11:57 → 12:00

Let us rise. Now may the

12:00 → 12:04

peace of God which goes beyond all of our understanding,

12:04 → 12:07

keep your hearts and your minds and especially your

12:07 → 12:10

lives in the one true faith unto life everlasting.

12:10 → 12:14

Amen.
