Transcript for EFL537 - Day 5

Time Content
00:01 → 00:03

Hello and Happy Friday!

00:03 → 00:09

Congratulations, you have survived Week#1 of EFL537.

00:09 → 00:12

and I just wanted to take a few minutes to talk to you now

00:12 → 00:16

since we're almost half way through the course, about few different things

00:16 → 00:23

I've noticed that in some of your reflections that some of you are feeling very stressed and overwhelmed

00:23 → 00:32

which makes me sad a little bit, because, I really want this course to be fun journey of learning.

00:32 → 00:37

and not this SERIES OF TASKS that you MUST COMPLETE

00:37 → 00:40

and DON'T SLEEP and JUST WORK and...

00:40 → 00:43

Yes, I realize there's a lot of content

00:44 → 00:48

But the important part for me as a teacher

00:49 → 00:52

is that you experience what's out there

00:52 → 00:55

that's my goal - to show you what's out there

00:55 → 00:58

to have you try to use them

00:58 → 01:01

I don't expect you to master these tools

01:01 → 01:04

I'm very aware of the limitations

01:04 → 01:07

of the lack of experience that some of you have

01:07 → 01:12

and the lack of access to the internet after the class each day

01:13 → 01:19

so, whatever I can say to try to help people be less stressed

01:19 → 01:21

I would like to say

01:21 → 01:30

because I think learning happens best when people are comfortable and relaxed

01:30 → 01:35

so again, please try to know that it's going to be OK

01:35 → 01:39

and I do realize that this is a very challenging course for a number of reasons

01:39 → 01:42

of course because I am far away

01:42 → 01:45

and this is an online course

01:45 → 01:48

that makes things more difficult in many ways.

01:48 → 01:51

I'm sure there are many times when you have a question or a problem,

01:51 → 01:53

If I was there, I could say

01:53 → 01:56

oh, do this and do that. Click here, click there.

01:56 → 02:03

and it's frustrating for me also when I've tried to prepare materials to help you step by step

02:03 → 02:12

but sometimes people don't find the answers that I hope they will find in those guides.

02:12 → 02:18

So, that's challenging, but I also want to point out that

02:18 → 02:22

in a way, this is how learning happens in the 21st century.

02:22 → 02:26

what you had to do to survive this week

02:26 → 02:29

was to find the information you needed

02:29 → 02:34

and to work with other people to accomplish your goals

02:34 → 02:39

and I think that is the way that education is evolving

02:39 → 02:42

It used to be that, OK for this course

02:42 → 02:45

we're going to learn this material and we're going to start here

02:45 → 02:48

and we're going to finish here. This is the knowledge

02:48 → 02:51

I am the teacher, you are the student, LEARN THIS!

02:51 → 02:57

and I don't think that is how learning works these days.

02:57 → 03:01

There's so much information. So many resources

03:01 → 03:04

with the internet and other opportunities

03:04 → 03:09

that it's not about learning 'this much' knowledge

03:09 → 03:12

It's about seeing what's out there

03:12 → 03:17

and knowing how to find what is useful and meaningful for you.

03:17 → 03:23

so I want you to think of this course also as an opportunity to experiment

03:23 → 03:28

with this different kind of approach toward education.

03:28 → 03:33

and that's pretty much what we're going to do for week 2

03:34 → 03:37

in week 2 what I really want you to do

03:39 → 03:42

is focus on the parts of CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning)

03:42 → 03:45

that will be most useful for you

03:45 → 03:48

or that you're most interested in.

03:48 → 03:53

So far, Week#1 we've all done the same readings, worked on the same skills

03:53 → 03:58

Week#2, I want you to start focusing on your interests.

03:58 → 04:02

Threre are no 'required' skills for Week 2.

04:02 → 04:05

All of the skills listed for Week2 are OPTIONAL

04:05 → 04:09

I provide thise guides so you can learn about them if you want

04:09 → 04:12

but you don't have to

04:12 → 04:15

So, some people might focus on these skills

04:15 → 04:18

other people might focus on other skills

04:18 → 04:24

Readings - I want you to find readings that are interesting to you

04:25 → 04:29

and finding those readings is a big part of the assignment.

04:30 → 04:33

because, that's one of the big challenges these days

04:33 → 04:36

is finding what is useful for you

04:39 → 04:41

in today's small group discussion

04:41 → 04:45

the questions I ask you are about what has been useful so far

04:45 → 04:48

and what else you want to learn more about

04:48 → 04:52

I'm really in hearnig those discussions and answers

04:54 → 04:57

because from here on out,

04:57 → 05:02

the content of this course will vary depending on what you want to learn.

05:02 → 05:08

My job is to help you get there. So whatever your learning goal is for week2

05:08 → 05:11

my job is to help you get there.

05:11 → 05:17

help you find what you're looking for, help you overcome the technical obstacles you will encounter

05:17 → 05:20

and I just want to say 'please use me'.

05:20 → 05:22

I'm here to help as much as possible

05:22 → 05:26

There are a number of tools we can use so I can see your computer

05:26 → 05:29

and you can see mine.

05:29 → 05:34

and I realize that some people are probably hesitant

05:34 → 05:39

because of the language difference and trying these new methods

05:39 → 05:42

but I really want to encourage you to try

05:42 → 05:48

becasue as a teacher I want to do as much as I can to help you achieve your learning goals

05:51 → 05:53

So that's all for now

05:54 → 05:56

I do want to say 'Have a good weekend'

05:56 → 05:58

Please, try to get some sleep.

05:58 → 06:00

Play with your children or your friends.

06:00 → 06:05

Take a little bit of a break because I know if you have this constant pressure

06:05 → 06:06

hanging over your head of

06:06 → 06:08

'Oh No! Another skill! I have this other assignment!

06:08 → 06:11

It's stressful. I do know that.

06:11 → 06:15

but try to catch your breath a little bit

06:15 → 06:19

and really try to focus on what you want to learn

06:19 → 06:22

So, I hope everyone has a good Day#5

06:22 → 06:24

and a good weekend and....

06:24 → 06:27

I will very much look forward to continuing this learning journey together
