So we all stumble over exciting findings, periodically, in science...

...but to recognize that’s it’s important and that it’s worth continuing to work on...

...instead of just putting it to the side and saying “that was a strange result, let’s move on...

...to do what we were starting to do”. That’s a trick...

...that probably none of us is 100 per cent capable of making those decisions correctly...

...but as you get more and more experience in science - I don’t know how it happens -

- somehow good scientists learn to make those distinctions, and say:

“Aha, this could be really important,

this would take us a huge amount of time and probably never would be very important”.

So it comes from working as a scientist to gain this ability...

...and I think it comes from maybe working with a mentor,

someone who has already developed this skill...

...and is now able to help guide a younger scientist to learn how to make these choices.
