It's pretty simple. There are nine, sort of, rules

that I discovered after 35 years of rock climbing.

Most of them are pretty basic.

Number one: Don't let go --

very sure success method.

00:16 → 00:19

But really, truly -- often you think about

00:19 → 00:21

letting go way before your body does.

00:21 → 00:23

So hang in there,

00:23 → 00:27

and you come up with some pretty peculiar solutions.

00:27 → 00:29

Number two: Hesitation is bad.

00:29 → 00:32

This is a friction climb, up in Tuolumne Meadows,

00:32 → 00:34

in the Yosemite high country.

00:34 → 00:38

Friction climbing doesn't have any sort of hard positive edges.

00:38 → 00:42

You're climbing on little dimples and nubbins in the rock.

00:42 → 00:46

The most friction you have is when you first put your hand

00:46 → 00:49

or your foot on the rock.

00:49 → 00:53

And then from that point on, you're basically falling.

00:53 → 00:56

So momentum is good. Don't stop.

00:56 → 00:58

Rule number three: Have a plan.

00:58 → 01:00

This is a climb called the Naked Edge,

01:00 → 01:02

in El Dorado Canyon, outside of Boulder.

01:02 → 01:05

This climber is on the last pitch of it.

01:05 → 01:07

He's actually right about where I fell.

01:07 → 01:10

There is about 1,000 feet of air below him.

01:10 → 01:13

And all the hard pitches are actually below him.

01:13 → 01:15

Often what happens is

01:15 → 01:17

you're planning so hard for like,

01:17 → 01:20

"How do I get through the hardest part? How do I get through the hardest part?"

01:20 → 01:22

And then what happens?

01:22 → 01:24

You get to the last pitch. It's easy.

01:24 → 01:27

And you're completely flamed out. Don't do it.

01:27 → 01:30

You have to plan ahead to get to the top.

01:30 → 01:33

But you also can't forget that each individual move

01:33 → 01:35

you have to be able to complete.

01:35 → 01:37

This is a climb called the Dike Route,

01:37 → 01:41

on Peyrat Dome, up in the Yosemite high country.

01:41 → 01:44

The interesting thing about this climb is it's not that hard.

01:44 → 01:46

But if you're the leader on it,

01:46 → 01:50

at the hardest move, you're looking at about 100 foot fall,

01:50 → 01:52

onto some low angle slabs.

01:52 → 01:54

So you've got to focus.

01:54 → 01:57

You don't want to stop in the middle like

01:57 → 01:59

Coleridge's Kubla Kahn.

01:59 → 02:01

You've got to keep going.

02:01 → 02:03

Rule number five: Know how to rest.

02:03 → 02:05

It's amazing. The best climbers

02:05 → 02:08

are the ones that in the most extreme situations

02:08 → 02:10

can get their bodies into some position

02:10 → 02:12

where they can rest,

02:12 → 02:15

regroup, calm themselves, focus,

02:15 → 02:19

and keep going.

02:19 → 02:21

This is a climb in the Needles, again in California.

02:21 → 02:23

Fear really sucks because what it means is

02:23 → 02:26

you're not focusing on what you're doing.

02:26 → 02:28

You're focusing on the consequences of

02:28 → 02:31

failing at what you're doing

02:31 → 02:33

because any given move should require

02:33 → 02:38

all your concentration and thought processes

02:38 → 02:40

to execute it effectively.

02:40 → 02:43

One of the things in climbing is, most people

02:43 → 02:47

sort of take it straight on. And they follow the most obvious solution.

02:47 → 02:50

This is the Devils Tower in Wyoming,

02:50 → 02:53

which is a columnar basalt formation

02:53 → 02:56

that most of you probably know from "Close Encouters."

02:56 → 02:58

With this, typically crack climbers

02:58 → 03:00

would put their hands in and their toes in,

03:00 → 03:02

and just start climbing.

03:02 → 03:05

The cracks are too small to get your toes into

03:05 → 03:08

so the only way to climb is using your fingertips

03:08 → 03:10

in the cracks,

03:10 → 03:12

and using opposing pressure

03:12 → 03:15

and forcing yourself up.

03:15 → 03:18

Rule number eight: Strength doesn't always equal success.

03:18 → 03:20

In the 35 years I've been a climbing guide

03:20 → 03:22

and taught on indoor walls, and stuff like that,

03:22 → 03:24

the most important thing I've learned

03:24 → 03:27

was, guys will always try to do pull-ups.

03:27 → 03:29

Beginning guys, it's like, they thrash, they thrash,

03:29 → 03:31

they get 15 feet up.

03:31 → 03:33

And they can do about 15 pull-ups right?

03:33 → 03:35

And then they just flame out.

03:35 → 03:37

Women are much more in balance

03:37 → 03:40

because they don't have that idea

03:40 → 03:42

that they're going to be able to do 100 pull-ups.

03:42 → 03:45

They think about how to get the weight over their feet

03:45 → 03:48

because it's sort of natural. They carry you all day long.

03:48 → 03:50

So balance is really critical,

03:50 → 03:52

and keeping your weight on your feet,

03:52 → 03:54

which is your strongest muscle.

03:54 → 03:56

And of course there is rule number nine.

03:56 → 03:58

I came up with rule number nine after

03:58 → 04:00

I actually didn't plan for a fall,

04:00 → 04:03

and went about 40 feet and cracked a rib.

04:03 → 04:06

Once you get to that point where you know it's going to happen,

04:06 → 04:09

you need to start thinking about how you're going to let go

04:09 → 04:12

because that is the critical piece

04:12 → 04:14

of not getting hurt --

04:14 → 04:18

how you're going to fall on to the rope,

04:18 → 04:20

or if you're climbing without a rope,

04:20 → 04:24

fall to a place where you can actually control the fall.

04:24 → 04:27

So don't hang on till the bitter end.

04:27 → 04:29
