Seriously Engaging

00:02 → 00:06

The Story of the NMC Campus in Second Life

00:06 → 00:07

[♫ soothing music ♫]

00:07 → 00:11

The new media consortium is an international not-for-profit organization

00:11 → 00:16

of nearly 200 leading colleges, universities, museums, corporations,

00:16 → 00:18

and other learning-focused bodies,

00:18 → 00:23

dedicated to pushing the edge of new media and new technology.

00:23 → 00:29

For several years, the NMC has been at the forefront of using the two-dimensional Web

00:29 → 00:35

as a space for convening people around new ideas and knowledge sharing.

00:35 → 00:39

The rich, interactive, three-dimensional NMC campus,

00:39 → 00:43

is located in the virtual world of Second Life.

00:43 → 00:49

The campus extends the NMC experience into 3-D virtual space,

00:49 → 00:54

providing a space for insightful interaction, collaboration,

00:54 → 01:04

learning, and experimentation, while encouraging the exploration of the potential of virtual environments.

01:04 → 01:07

It is a place intended to inspire creative ideas,

01:07 → 01:12

and stimulate thoughtful discourse, related to the potential of such spaces.

01:12 → 01:17

It has been designed to be playful, yet serious, at the same time.

01:17 → 01:21

The campus itself encourages exploration and interaction,

01:21 → 01:25

and most visitors will find something new on every visit.

01:29 → 01:35

Like the World Wide Web before, Second Life is a platform that allows users to share

01:35 → 01:39

their ideas and creations with others around the world.

01:39 → 01:44

But Second Life extends the internet into a three-dimensional world,

01:44 → 01:48

where visitors can interact in realtime, in a shared virtual space.

01:48 → 01:52

Seventy-five percent of users, in a rapidly growing population,

01:52 → 01:58

have contributed content to a world that is 100% user created.

01:58 → 02:04

As a place of endless creativity, Second Life provides a richer creative social experience

02:04 → 02:07

than is available on the 2-D Web.

02:07 → 02:14

Unpredictable, emergent behaviors abound, in a world where users are given free rein.

02:14 → 02:18

And many Second Life residents have turned their play environment

02:18 → 02:21

into their real-world careers.

02:21 → 02:26

Lindex is a free-market currency exchange that enables content creators,

02:26 → 02:30

whose varied skills range from graphic design to software development,

02:30 → 02:32

to sell digital worlds for real money.

02:32 → 02:37

Entreprenuers in marketing, real estate, and professional services,

02:37 → 02:41

have created professional companies around the platform.

02:41 → 02:46

A secondary market of contractors has emerged to support entreprenuerial efforts.

02:46 → 02:51

The NMC campus exists in this virtual universe,

02:51 → 02:54

and is designed both to complement and extend it.

02:54 → 02:59

The societal and economic aspects of Second Life inform the mission of the campus,

02:59 → 03:04

which is to demonstrate how rich virtual worlds like Second Life

03:04 → 03:08

can be put to productive use solving real-world issues.

03:08 → 03:15

A variety of meeting spaces facilitate this work and allow the exploration of the human side

03:15 → 03:19

of working in a 3-D virtual environment.

03:19 → 03:22

The library and museum are experimental spaces.

03:22 → 03:28

The Malcolm Brown Library is the focal point of experiments exploring the intersection

03:28 → 03:31

of 3-D virtual space and the Web.

03:31 → 03:36

The Aho Gallery and the Constable Room are places where the boundaries

03:36 → 03:41

between art and representation and between art and derivatives, are explored.

03:41 → 03:45

Originally built to support a series of virtual conversations,

03:45 → 03:49

the MacArthur Foundation Series on Digital Media and Learning,

03:49 → 03:52

given the tremendous response it has received,

03:52 → 03:56

a wide range of activities are now planned for the NMC campus.

03:56 → 04:02

From large-scale virtual components of real-life events, like the NMC Summer Conference,

04:02 → 04:05

to events held entirely in Second Life,

04:05 → 04:11

one possible future of the NMC campus is to be the home for a series

04:11 → 04:14

of NMC meetings in virtual space.

04:14 → 04:21

Already underway is the significant use of the space by undergraduate and graduate classes

04:21 → 04:26

interested in virtual environments, and much more such use is planned.

04:26 → 04:31

What is most likely, however, just as in all of Second Life,

04:31 → 04:36

is that the visitors to the NMC campus will find uses for it

04:36 → 04:38

that we cannot possibly imagine today.

04:38 → 04:42

To learn more about the NMC's journey into virtual space,

04:42 → 04:45

and to follow along as the project progresses,

04:45 → 04:50

see the NMC Campus Observer, a blog set up to record not only our insights,

04:50 → 04:53

but those of other Second Life residents as well.
